WILLIAM S. MAGLEWEE, 0F TBENTON, NEW JERSEY, ASSTGNOR T0 CARRIE HOWELL MAOLEWEE, 0F TBENTON, NEN JERSEY.
LAMP-ADJUSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent; Patented Apr, 19, 1921.
Application filed October 25,1918; SerialNo. 259,646. 7
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILLIAM S. M'AoLnwEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Adjusters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in an adjuster for electric lamps and particularly electric lamps suspended by a flexible cord. The object of my invention is to provide an adjusting device by which the lamp may be readily raised and lowered and held at any desired height; a further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the lamp shade may be held with its ax s verv tic-al or at an oblique angle to direct the rays of light from the lamp downwardly or at an angle, and a still further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable triction sleeve upon the cord, having two enlarged members detachably secured together to permit an endless ring to be loosely mounted upon said sleeve and retained thereon.
Referring to the accompanying drawing;
Figure 1, is a side elevation of an electric lamp and shade showlng the lamp suspended bymy improved ad usting device;
Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the lamp and shade suspended at an oblique angle; I
Fig. 3, is a central section of one member of the cord sleeve;
Fig. 4:, is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the other member of the cord sleeve.
In the drawings, in which like reference.
characters refer to like parts, 1 represents an incandescent electric lamp socket, having; attached thereto the flexible cord 2 containing the wires for the lamp 4. The upper end 3 of the cord 2 isattached to a fiirture from which it is suspended. A shade 5 is secured in the lamp socket 1, in any suitable manner.
A friction sleeve 6 is mounted upon the cord 2 and is slidable thereon by hand, but fits tightly upon the cord and when inclined at an oblique angle with the vertical portion of the cord it will bind upon the cord with sufficient friction to support the weight of I the lamp. The sleeve 6 is made in two parts 7 and 8 which are detachably secured together by a screw threaded extension 9 upon which is loosely mounted a ring 12, of
smaller interior diameter than the spherical members, so that it cannot slip over the latter. The purpose of making the sleeve in twfisections is to allow the ring to be readilyattached thereto and thus avoiding the ne cessity of using a split ring which would spring open dueto the weight of the lamp.
The ring 12 carries two flexible members, in the form of chains 1 and 15, of different lengths, and the chains are provided with hooks to and 17 secured to the lower ends thereof. The hook 16' on the chain 14 may be inserted in the eye 20 of a plate 21 which is secu d upon the lamp socket 1 and the lamp will be supported by the chain 14 and suspended in a vertical position, as-shown in Fig. 1. By moving the sleeve 6 to different positions upon the cord the lamp may be chain 15 to the lower edge of the shade 5, the.
lamp may be held at an oblique angle, as
shown in Fig. 2 and when in this position the lan p may be raised and lowered by the adjustment of the sleeve 6 upon the cord 2.
Having thus (escribed my invention I clai a-and desire to secure by Letters Patent: An electric lamp or the like, a flexible conductor attached thereto,.a sleeve adapted to be mountedon the said conductor. said sleeve consisting; of two spherical members, one of said spherical members having a screw-threaded projection thereon, the other one of said spherical members having: a screw-threaded recess formed therein adaptedto receive the said projection on the first mentioned spherical member, a ring loosely -mounted between the said spherical members and means carried by the said ring for holding the lamp in'various positions.
" In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
'. WILLIAM S. MACLEWEE.
