IMPROVEMENTIN CHANNELING AND EDGING TOOLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,404, dated April 1, 1873 application filed February 24, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

1% it known that I, LOUIS BAUER, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented a Combined Channeling and Edging Tool and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to a combined channelingand edging tool for harness-makers and saddlers use. The tool is intended to round the corner of the edge of a piece of leather and at the same time out a diagonal slit a short distance from the edge of the leather in which the stitches of sewed work can be drawn so that the raised edge will close over them and thus protect the sewing.

In order to explain my invention so that it can be readily understood by others, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view. Fig. 3 is-a top view.

A is the handle, and B the shank, of the tool. The extremity d of the shank is flattened, as shown, and turned upward, the flattened portion being slightly rounded toward its point. A small rib or projection, C, is formed on the outer under edge of the flattened extremity d, which serves as a shoulder to press against the edge of the piece of leather in order to guide the tool. The extreme edge of the fiattened portion at has a Vshaped opening or recess, e, made in it, and both the upper and lower sides of the portion d have a groove, "5, leading into the apex of the V-shaped recess, by which its converging sides are formed into cutting-edges similar to the ordinary edgingtool. An elongatedhole, f, ismade through the flattened portion at a short distance back of the V-sha'pedrecess, through which the cutting or channeling tool projects. A stud or steadying pin, 0, projects upward from the upper side of the flattened portion at near its junction with the shank, which enters a small hole in the extremity of a bar, This bar extends forward along the upper side of the portion d,

and has at its forward end a knife-holder, 0', which comes directly over the elongated hole f. A set-screw, 8, passes through a slotted hole in the bar 19 at or near its middle, and screws into the portion d, and serves to hold the bar in the desired position. The knife t passes down through the knife-holder r and hole or opening f until its point projects below the portion 01 suffliently tocut the required depth of channel, and is fixed in this position by the set'screw a.

By loosening the set-screw n the knife can be adjusted transversely in the opening f by moving the forward end of the bar 19 to the rightor left, as required, the pin 0 serving as a center from which the bar will move, and when it has been properly adjusted it is again fixed in place by the set-screw 8.

By drawing the knife upward until its point is above the lower surface of the portion d the edging portion can be used alone, and when it it is desired to use only the channeling-knife the said knife is lowered to the proper place and the tool held so that the edging-cutters will not interfere, which can be readily done owing to the rounding of the portion 66.

By the above combination I provide a simple and convenient tool for edging and channeling leather at one and the same operation, and which has the advantage of permitting the use of either portion separately when desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combined channeling and edging tool, consisting of the handle A, shank B, flattened portion 01 with its V-shaped edging-blades, and having the rib or projection C and opening f, in combination with the bar 19 with its knife-holder r and set-screws s n, steadied by the pin 0, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
