CUFF-LINK.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE J. BRADBURY, a resident of Washington, in the District of Columbia, and a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Links, of which'the following is a specification.

One object of this invention is to provide a novel construction of cuff link which will effectually restrainthe button head from accidental release and consequent loss, but facilitate the removal of the head from the link when necessary or desirable.

Another objectlof the invention is to provide a cuif link which may be easily applied to a cuff and which will be light, inexpensive, and of an attractive appearance.

Other incidental objects will appear in the course of the following description and the invention resides incertain novel features which will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. Y

The link is telescopic in construction and comprises a central sleeve 1 and end sleeves 2, fitting closely but slidably in the opposite ends of the central sleeve. The inner ends of the sleeves 2 are open, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, but the outer ends thereof are closed by the heads 3, which project annularly beyond the sleeves and thereby present stop shoulders 4 to limit the movement of the respective end sleeves inwardly relative to the central sleeve by contact with the adjacent end of the central sleeve as will be readily understood. A .coiled expansion spring 5 is housed within the sleeves with its ends against the heads 3 and tends constantly to hold the end sleeves apart. To prevent separation of the several sleeves under the influence of the spring I provide the combined connecting rod and button car- Specicatonof Letters Patent.

rier 6, which extends axially through all the sleeves and through the heads 3, the projecting ends of the rod being formed into hooks 7, which may be engaged through the eyes or Shanks 8 of the .buttons 9. The said eyes or Shanks will be held firmly against the outer face of the heads 3, by the combined laction of the spring 5 and the hooks 7 and the end sleeves, thereby prevented from separating from the central sleeve. For further security, the heads 3 are each provided with a notch 10 `in its edge to receive the bill 11 of the hook 7, so that the eye or shank 8 may be held in contact with the head and relative rotation of the head and the rod will be prevented. This construction, moreover, permits the hook to be heldin engagement with the head when the button is removed, so that separation of the sleeves will be prevented under all circumstances. Diametrically opposite the notch 10, each head 3 is out away segmentally, as at l2, and the chordal `face is beveled outwardly, as shown at 13. Ifzthe rod 6 be turned so that the bill 11 of the hook 7 is presented to the surface 13,*the button may be easily removed from or engaged with the hook, as will be readily understood on reference to Fig. 5. v f Y From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily seen that I have provided a light, easily manipulated, inexpensive and attractive device which may be easily applied to a cuff and will efficiently holdV the cuif closed. In applying the fastener to a cuff, the button may be turned to a position parallel or substantially parallel to the axis of the link and then inserted through the button hole, or the button may be removed and rengaged with the link after the end of the latter has been passed through the button hole. The readiness with which the button may be engaged with or detached from the link makes feasible the provision of a plurality of buttons for use in connection with the same link so that at a small cost the user may obtain a wide variation in his dress. In applying a button to a link, the eye or shank of the button is engaged onthe hook while the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 5. After the button has been fully engaged upon the hook, the latter is rotated about the axis of the link, the bill of the hook riding on the outer face of the head 3 until it reaches the notch 10, whereupon the spring 5 Vwill instantly expand Yand effect engagement of the Vhook in the notch. Accidental separation of the parts can not then occur, and, if it be desired to remove the button, the hook must be Withdrawn from the notch "and then rotated until the eye of the button may be removed past the beveled 'face 13. In the modification shown in Fig. 6 instead of the end sleeves 2a fitting slidably within the central sleeve la the central sleeve is slidabl 'mounted Within the end sleeves 2aL thus giving to the link a. neat and attractive appearance.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. The combination of a telescopic link, a button carrier passing through said link, buttons'on the ends of the buttony carrier, and means housed Within the link to yieldingly hold theV ends of the carrier against the exterior of the endsof the link.

the ends of the link being closed and Vprovidedreach with a notch, a button carrier mounted in the link and terminating in hooks exterior to the link, buttons engaged on said hooks, and means for holding each hook normally in engagement with the notch in the adjacent end of the link.

The vcombination of a telescopic link consisting of a central-sleeve and end sleeves slidably mounted in the central sleeve, heads closing the outer-ends of the end sleeves and presenting stop shoulders to the ends of the central sleeve, a spring housed within the sleeves and bearing against said heads, a rod extending through the heads, and buttons carried'by the ends of said rod, the spring holding the heads to the ends of the rod.
