The locking membr 17 is carried by the channel rack member, being located through a suitable aperture 18 therein, a pin 19 being located through said channelmember, engaging the locking member between the shoulder 20 and the lugs 21, thus preventingaccidental displacement of the locking member. A vertical groove 22 is formed in the inner end of the locking member to allow the pin 16 to pass therethrough.
The outer end of the locking member is reduced as at 23 and provided with the oppositely disposed studs 24 arranged to be' normally located within the inclined grooves 25 which are formed in the rear wall of the standard 1, an aperture 26 being formed in said rear wall in order to allow the locking member to project therethrough.
A shaft 27 is journaled within the bearings 3 and a worm 28 is lixedly mounted upon said shaft and normally meshes with the worm rack 9, the worm teeth being out away from the upper end of the worm rack 5 in order that the worm will not mesh therewith when said rack is in the lowered position.
A beveled pinion 29 is xed upon the lower end of the shaft 27 and meshes with the beveled pinion 30 which is lixedly mounted upon the shaft 31,. said shaft being journaled through the side walls of the standard 1 and provided upon one'end witha ratchet 32 which is fixed thereto in any usual and well known manner. A spring detent 33 is connected to the adjacent side wall of the standard and engages the ratchet 32 to prevent any lost motion thereof.
In operating the device when it is desired to lift .an object, the seat 13 is placed under the object and the pawl 36 thrown into the position shown in Fig. 3. As the operating lever 34 is oscillated the ratchet will be ro-v tated and through the'gears 30 and 2 9 will rotate the worm 28 in thev proper direction to cause the worm rack member 9 of the lifting bar to be slowly raised. When the member 9 vhas been raised sufficiently to bring the pin 16 into contact with the shoulder 15 of the worm rack member 5, the member 5 will then be raised with the member 9, the worm teeth upon the member 5 being brought into engagement with the worm 28 before the teeth upon the member 9 are moved out of engagement with the said worm.
As the member 5 starts to raise,the locking member 17 will be moved upwardly and inwardly through the inclined grooves 25 projecting the inner end of said locking member beneath the lower extremity of the rack member 9, thus supporting the weight of the rack member 9 upon said lockmg member and locking the member 9 to the member 5, the pin 16 being thus held in en gagement with the shoulder 15 and the member 9 being prevented( from movement in either direction with relation to the member 5. Further rotation of the Worm 28 will cause the'gentire lifting bar to be moved upwardly to the upper limit of its movement.
Vhen it is desired to lower the jack the pawl 36 isreversed and the lifting bar is lowered until therack member 5 is moved downwardly to its lower limit of movement bringing the teeth thereof out of engagement with the worm 28' and bringing the teeth of the rack member 9 into engagement with said worm, the locking member 17 being moved back into the initial positionas thestuds 24 thereonare again brought into .engagement with the inclined grooves 25 in the rear wall of the standard I claim: Y

A lifting jack comprising a standard, a lifting bar vertically movable within said standard and comprising two members, lifting means for engagement with both of said members for moving one of said members with relation to the other and means for automatically locking both of said members together at a predetermined point.

A lifting jack comprising a standard, a lifting bar vertically movable within said -standard and comprising two members, lifting means for engagement with both of said vmembers for moving one of said members independently of the other and means for automatically lockingsaid members together when the first member has reached the upper limit of its movement.
3. A lifting jackcomprising a standard, a lifting bar 'vertically movable Within the standard and comprising a pair of rack members, lifting means for engagement with Leiden ing said rack members together when thet first member has reached the limit of its upward movement with relation to the second member, and means for moving both of said members after they are locked together.
5. A lifting jack comprising a standard, a lifting bar vertically movable within the standard and comprising a. channel member and a bar member located therein, lifting l l means ior engagement with the channel member and bar member for moving the bar Within the channel, means for automatically locking the bar to the channel when the bar has reached a predetermined point and means for moving the bar and channel together.
6. A lifting jack comprising a standard, a lifting bar mounted for vertical movement Within the Standard and comprising a channel Worm rack and a worm rack bar mounted for vertical movement therein, a worm in the standard normally engaging the rack bar, means upon the rack ar for engaging thc rack channel to move the same into engagement with the Worm and means for automatically channel.

A lifting jack comprising a standard, a lifting bar mounted for vertical movement Within the standard and comprising a channel member and a bar member slidably mounted therein, lifting means for engagement with the channel member and bar member for moving the bar member with relation to the channel member, a pin carried by the barmember, a shoulder upon the channel member arranged to be engaged by the pin when the bar member reaches the upward limit of its movement with relation to the Achannel member and a locking member carried by the channel member and arranged to automatically lock said members together.

A lifting jack comprising a standard, a lifting bar mounted for vertical movement Within the standard and comprising a channel Worm rack and a worin rack bar mountrv ed for vertical movement therein, a Worm in the standard normally engaging the rack bar and normally out of engagement with the rack channel, a pin upon the rack bar at a predetermined locking the rack bar 'and a shoulder upon the rack channel arranged to be engaged by the pin at a predetermined time to move the rack channel into engagement with the Worm, and a locking member carried by the rack channel and. arranged to automatically locl'the rack bar thereto after the rack channel has been engaged by the Worm. A lifting jack comprising a standard, a lifting bar vertically movable within said standard and comprising two members, lifting means for engagement with both of said one of said members upward with relation to the other, means for automatically locking both of said memu bers together at a, predetermined time, means for moving both members together, and means for automatically unlocking said members at a predetermined time on the downward movement of the lifting bar.
