Belt known that we, STEP EN SUHAJDA and KARoL AnAMowsKI, citizens of the zens of the United States of America, re-
siding at vVeirton, county of Hancock, and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rail'Ties and Fasteners, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates broadly to track construction and more particularly to i a combined rail tie and fastener.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a tie having crossedrecesses in the upper face thereof for the reception of a rail and clamping means respectively, with improvedmeans for holding the clamping means i'nposition.
A further object of the present invention is to provide clamping means which may be adjusted from time to time as desired, to take up wear and prevent creeping of the rails under tractive influences. V
A still further object of the-present invention is to simplify rail fastening devices as heretofore constructed by minimizing the number of loose parts required.
The foregoing and other objects, together with their attendant advantages, will be apparent .as the invention becomes better understood, by reference .to the accompanying specification-and drawings forming a part thereof,it being premised that changes may be made in the various details andthe manner of operation, within the scope of the appended claims. without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Specification of Letters Patent. Pat nted M 1 1921 v We are aware that it has heretofore been proposed to construct'ties' having cross'edrecesses in the upper face thereof for the reception of clamping members, which clampin members have in turn been held in p0- sitionby rectangular blocks engaging the same; By means of the present invention the use of blocks is eliminated and the number of loose or movable parts thereby correspondingly decreased. Y i

Referring more particularly to the draw-' ings, there is illustrated a tie 2 of any desired material and construction, having transversely extending recesses3 adjacent the opposite ends thereof for the reception of the base flanges of rails 4: of any usual or well known construction. These recesses are preferably ofa depth substantially equal to the height of the base flanges of the rails, so that at the point of unionbetween the rails and the ties an even surface is presented. Extending longitudinally of the tie and crossing the recesses 3 are supplemental recesses 5; having their side walls undercut as shown. At the end of each of the recesses 5 is a vertical opening 6 for the recept lQl of a bolt '7. The'width of each of the V recesses 3 is preferably slightly greater than the length of each of the undercut recesses 5, whereby clamping members maybe'readily inserted in position. In the preferred "embodiment of our invention we utilize clamping members 8 for theoutside of the rail and slightly difi'erent clamping members 9 for the inside thereof. The clamping members 8 have a plurality of dove-tail shaped projections 10 formed on the base thereof adapted to engage in turnthe upper recessi5 .on the outside of therail and a lower; smaller recess 11. he projectionsv 10 are also .ofless length than the width of the recesses 3, thereby permitting-the clamping members to. be dropped into position in the recesses and slid longitudinally outwardly so as to, extend partially into the vertical openings 6, Where a plurality of dove-tail The clamping members 9 for the inside of the rails are preferably narrower than the outside clamping members 8, and are proas illustrated, and the bolts 7 screwed into the recesses 6 to lock the clamping members in position. If desired, the ends of the clamping'members may be threaded to engage the bolts and provide supplemental locking means therefor. v In other instances, however, it may be desirable to incline the ends 14 of the clamping members, as shown in Fi 7, and provide the bolts 7 with conical heads 15 for engagement therewith. Due tothis construction, it will be apparent that a variable or adjustable clamping action can be exerted on the clamping members by the bolts to take up wear and prevent creeping of the rails.
, It will be apparent that if desired we may utilize the same type of clamping members on both the inside and outside of the rails to additionally strengthen the same. In ordinary straight track construction, however,
we have found that it is desirable to'provide the stronger supporting means on the outside of the rails to prevent spreading thereof.
The advantages of the present invention arise from the construction permitting the ready laying of track without the use of spikes.
Further advantages reside in the form of clamping members and locking means therefor, whereby the number of movable parts is decreasedto a minimum.
