Specification of Letters Patent. .PatgntedFeb, 22, 1021 Application filed November 17, 1919. Serial No. 338,538.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS SIMENOWSKY, a citizen of the United States, and'resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottle stoppers, more particularly of that type including a plu member carried by a yoke which is connecte with lever arms pivoted to an attaching member secured about the neck of the bottle whereby said yoke member may be shifted upon rocking the lever arms to either compress the plug in the bottle neck or to release the plug for discharge of the contents of the bottle.
It is in general the object of my invention to simplify and otherwise improve the structure and to increase the efiiciency of stopper devices of this character. Inasmuch as such stopper devices constitute a considerable item of expense, it is more particularlg my object to provide a stopper device whic may be detachably associated with the bottle neck, whereby the device may be readily removed upon breakage of the bottle, and applied to another bottle. A more detail object in this connection resides in the provision of an arrangement operable incidental to the application of sealing ressure on the stopper plug for positively ocking the attaching member of the stopper. device on the bottle neck.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and defined by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the bottle neck showing my improved stopper device associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. r
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the at taching member of the device.
lieferring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, I have shown a bottle neck A of conventional type providedwith the usual bulge at its upper end which forms a consequent shoulder s adjacent the top thereof. 1
My improved stopper device comprises an attaching member 5 formed of an elongated strip of sheet metal having considerable resilience and bent into Ushape, with the outer end portions of'its legs slightly converged,'said attaching member being reinforced by a brace rib 6 longitudinally struck from its intermediate portion and extending from end to end of the strip. This attaching member is adapted to fit snugly about the neck of the bottle immediately below the shoulder a, the resilient grip of the member by reason of the convergence of its legs serving to hold the member in this position. The ends of the legs of the attaching member are provided with upward extensions 7 adapted to engage the bulge when the attaching member is seated against the shoulder. The usual wire lever member 8 is provided, having end portions 9 pivotally connected with the usual yoke 10 carrying the stopper plug 11, and the free terminals of the lever member are inwardly directed to form pivot pintles 12, these pintles being engaged in bearing openings 13 formed in the rib portions of the legs of the attaching member 5. By disposing the bearing openings 13 in the rib 6, the edges of the openings are spaced a considerable distance from the surface of the bottle neck, thus permitting a substantial length of the pivot pintles 12 to pass through the openings and effect a secure pivotal connection.
An exceedingly simple, efiective and readily manipulated stopper device has thus been provided. WVhen the yoke 10 is shifted to draw the stopper plug 11 into the bottle.
neck, the attaching member 5 is held up against the shoulder s of the bottle neck, and the projections7 of the attaching member abut the bulge of the bottle neck to prevent possible detachment of the stopper device y movement of the attaching member transversely of the bottle neck. When, however, the stopper plug 11 is released, the attaching member 5 may be slid downwardly a slight distance on the bottle neck to dispose the projection 7 below the bulge and the devicemay be then readily withdrawn from the bottle neck.
What is claimed is:
1. A stopper device of the class described comprising a substantially U-shaped at taching member adapted to embrace the neck of a bottle adjacent the bulge thereof, a
bulge thereof, said attaching member being formed of an elongated'strip of metal bent to desiredshape and provided with an outwardly struck reinforcing rib extending longitudinally through its intermediate portion, said rib being provided With bearing openings at opposed portions of the strip and a plug carrying 'lever having pintle portions engaged in said bearing openings of the rib. p
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee,
in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin. r
