WAGON-STANDARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
Application filed August 4, 1919. Serial No. 315,268.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID T. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon- Standards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wagon standards or stakes, and it has particular reference to a removable and adjust able standard therefor.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, strong, durable, inexpensive, readily removable, and easily adjusted on the bolster thus permitting the use of different width beds, also permitting easy removal of logs and the like there from.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,-
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of the same figure.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view illustrating one of the features of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a section of the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred example of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a wagon bolster which may be of any preferred construction and which is provided with a metal top strip 2, which may extend from end to end of the bolster, or any part of the length as may be desired. This strip is provided near one edge thereof with a series of adjusting perforations 3. On opposite sides of the bolster are guide plates 4.- which have their upper ends bent upon themselves to form guide hooks 5, the purpose of which will hereinafter be set forth.
The stake or standard 6 consists of a body portion 7, which is tapered as shown-to provide a base 8. Secured to the body portion 7 is a metal reinforcing member designated as a whole by the numeral 9. This reinforcing member comprises a base portion 10, and a strap portion 11 which is bent upward from one end of the base at 12 extends along one side of the body portion, being then curved over the top thereof at 13, downward at 14c, outward at 15 to form a brace which is fastened to the base portion at 16, in the manner shown. Near one end of the base portion are notches 17 and at the opposite end is a pin alining hole 18,
the purposes of which will be pointed out in the description of the parts that co-act therewith.
Fastened to opposite sides of the body portion 7 are a pair of metal supporting straps or arms 19, the free ends of which extend below the top of the bolster, and are bent at 20 to form hooks which are adapted to slidably engage the guide hooks 5. Thus, it will be seen that the standard may readily be guided into proper position and be held in such position by means of the members 1 and 19.
As an additional means for slidably retaining the standard 6 on the bolster I employ substantially U-shaped plates 21 which have their ends inturned at 22 and surround and retain the parts 2 and 10 together. These. plates 21 are preferably placed adjacent to the ends of the parts 2 and 10 to prevent tilting or swaying of the standard on the bolster.
I also employ rings 23, which are fastened to the upper portion of the standard and permit a stake or the like to be held therein which will increase the height of the standards, when it is so desired.
A locking pin 24: is provided. This pin operates through a plate 25 which has its opposite ends bent as shown, to permit a coiled spring 26 to be confined therebetween. This pin is adapted to pass through the opening 18 in the part 10 and then into one of the perforations 3 in the top strip 2, whereby these parts are locked together, and adjustment between the parts permitted when needed.
In assembling or placing the standard on the bolster it will be found convenient to aline the notches 17 over the U-shaped plates 22 and force or slide the parts together. However, the parts may be easily assembled from the opposite direction, that is from left to right. When thus slid together the pin 24 will automatically drop into one of the perforations 3 and lock the parts together.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred form of the same and that various changes in the shape, size,
. and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subj oined claim.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In combination, a wagon bolster, a retaining member including hooks carried by the bolster, a wooden standard, a metal reinforcing member for the latter including a relatively wide base portion on which the standard rests, and a relatively narrow strap portion'rising from one end of the base portion and extending upwardly along one side of the standard, over the top thereof and down along the opposite side to a point adjacent the center of the latter, the end of the strap being directed forwardly from the standard at this point to form a diagonal brace, the end of the latter being secured to said base portion at the end opposite to that from which the strap rises, said base portion being provided intermediate its ends with oppositely disposed notches for receiving said hooks when the standard and reinforcing member are being placed in position, said 7 hooks engaging portions of the base beyond said notches when said standard and member are in operative position on the bolster, serving to partially retain the latter against displacement, and means for permitting adj ustment of the standard and reinforcing member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
DAVID T. SMITH.
