WRITING ATTACHMENT. APPLSQATION HLE'D APR. I2, 19w.

JOHANNES P. GLAESSER, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
WRITING ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 12, 1918. Serial No. 228,270.
T 0 all to ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHANNns P. GLAES- snn, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Mllwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVriting Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in pen and pencil attachments, and its primary object is the provision of an article of this character by means of which the student may be taught the correct position in whlch the hand and pen or pencil should be held to write a legible slanting script.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a pen and pencil attachment of the above stated character which will afford such a firm rest for the fingers as to prevent writers cramps.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a pen and pencil attachment of the above stated character which may be readily and quickly applied to and removed from a pen or pencil of any size and of any cross sectional formation, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of a pen and pencil clip constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the blank from which the attachment is formed. and
Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view through the attachment and the pencil to which it is applied.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates the sleeve and 2 the wings of my improved pencil attachment. The sleeve 1 has an open side, and through this side a portion of the side of the writing instrument extends. The wings 2 extend laterally from the longitudinal edges of the sleeve 1 and form an integral part of the sleeve and may be of any suitable configuratlon. To save material, and to permit the attachment to be made light in weight, the wings 2 are of skeleton outline. The wings 2 are arranged in outwardly diverging relation to permit the ready insertion of the forefinger therebetween and to permit the ready application of the attachment to a pen or pencil. A thumb rest 3 is carried by the sleeve 1 at a point adjacent its lower end and it forms an integral extension of one longitudinal edge of the sleeve.
The attachment may be made from a single blank of any suitable resilient material, and it may be stamped up and formed in a single operation by a suitable machine.
To apply the attachment to a pen or pencil, it is only necessary to insert the writing instrument in the sleeve 1 and position the sleeve at a point adjacent the lower or outer end of the instrument,'as clearly shownin Fig. 1 of the drawing. After the attachment has been applied to the writing instrument, the forefinger is laid straight along the instrument between the wings 2, the wings holding the forefinger in this position. The thumb is then placed in engagement with the rest 3. The sleeve 1 grips the pencil with sufficient force to prevent the attachment from having any rotary or length-' wise movement with relation thereto. 'vVhen using an attachment constructed in accord ance with my invention, the fingers and the writing instrument must be held in that position necessary to write a good legible slanting script. The attachment provides means by which the writing instrument may Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
be firmly grasped, prevents the writer'from acquiring writers cramps, and permits the student to learn to write a good legible script in a comparatively short time.
WVhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An attachment for writing instruments ment and having its opposite sides flanged In testimony whereof I affix my signature slightly to form a longitudinal guide for in presence of two Witnesses.
the insertion of a finger of a Writer, and a thumb rest carried by the sleeve at a point J OHANNES P. GLAESSER. adjacent its lower end and forming an integral extension of on'elongitudinal edge of Witnesses:
the sleeve to be engaged by the end of the WILLIAM WI L,
thumb of a Writers hand. CLARENCE T. RADKE.
