DETACHABLE HANDLE.
APPUCATION HLED on. 13, 1920.

:IELEL A TTORNE Y.
UNITED STATES EDWARD N. SCHOTT, OF ALBERT LEA, MINNESOTA.
DETACHABLE HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 18, 1920. Serial No. 417,837.
T 0 all w ham it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD N. SoHoT'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at AL bert Lea, in the county of Freeborn and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to handles, and particularly to detachable handles.
An object of the invention is to provide a handle of this character so constructed that it may be used in connection with any number of utensils.
Another object is to provide a handle of this character wherein the resilient force of the handle maintains it in position indefinitely, accidental disengagement being im' possible.
Another object is to provide a handle of this character including a body member having a pair of sockets provided with lock slots, and a resilient handle having its ends disposed within the sockets and extending through the lock slots to prevent accidental disengagement of the handle from the body member.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a handle of this character consisting of a single length of resilient wire bent upon itself to provide spaced arms, the extremities of said arms being urged through the sides of the slots of the body member upon expansion of the arms.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of the blank, from which the body member and sockets are formed,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the body member with the handle applied,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the handle applied to a utensil,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the handle detached, and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
-Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a body member or plate constructed of any desired material and having a plurality of openings 6 for the reception of rivets or like fastening means to secure the plate to the receptacle. The construction of the plate permits it to be used in connection with any cooking utensil so that the formation of special holding means in the utensil is not necessary. The plate 5 includes a pair of extensions 7, said extensions extending in the opposite directions and terminating above the lower end 8 of the plate. The lower end of each of the extensions is provided with a lock slot 9, the lock being formed by the in wardly projecting portions 10 which restrict the entrance to the slot and prevent any means disposed in the slot from becoming accidentally disengaged therefrom. It will be noted that the end portions of the extensions adjacent the portions 10 are cut away so as to provide a relatively wide entrance.
Each of the extensions 7 is extended back upon the plate 5 toward each other to provide sockets 11, the longitudinal edges 12 of the extensions being disposed in spaced parallel relation to the plate 5 to provide an entrance to the respective sockets. In view of this the detachable handle is not inserted from the top but from the sides.
The handle consists of a length 13 of resilient wire bent at its intermediate portion to provide spaced arms 14. The end portion 15 of each arm is disposedin right angular relation to the arm, the length of said portion 15 corresponding substantially to the length of the socket 11. The extremity 16 of each portion 15 is bent or extended in right angular relation to said portion 15, said extremities extending in opposite directions. In the formation of the handle, the arms are so arranged that they are constantly and yieldably urged away from each other at all times through the medium of the resilient force of the wire. Furthermore, the portions of the arms 14 adjacent the intermediate portion of the wire are extended in angular relation to the main portions'of said arms, suiiicient to reinforce the intermediate portion of the wire and help to retain the resilient force of the arms in addition to preventing the hand of the user from slipping from the handle, the distance at the intermediate portion of the length between the arms 14 corresponding to the distance Patented Feb. 8, 1921f between the sockets 11 of the plate 5 so that the tendency of the arms to diverge is not interfered with.
To apply the handle, the arms 14 are depressed or moved toward each other so as to position the portions 15 thereof in engagement with the plate between the sockets.
When the arms 1% are released by the oper-' forced through the restricted portions of the lock slots, and into the slots. 'By this means it is impossible for the handle to become accidentally disengaged from the plate 5. This holding feature is assisted by constructing the sockets 11 so that they snugly engage the portions of the handle to pre vent movement of the handle. In addition to this the resilient force of the wire 13 constantly urges the arms 14 away from each other so that substantially three locking operations are performed.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel form of detachable handle wherein one handle may be used in connection with any number of utensils, fastening means such as screws, rivets or the like being unnecessary as the invention not only supports the handle but uses the same means to lock the handle in position so that while the invention is simple and practical, it is at the same time substantial and therefore can be used indefinitely.
That is claimed is 1. A device of the character described comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a receptacle and having certain of its opposed marginal edges formed into sockets, each of said sockets having an entrance in one of its sides and a lock slot in one end thereof, and a resilient handle having its end portions yieldably urged into the sock 'ets, the extremities of said end portions extending in opposite directions and adapted to retain the handle within the sockets through the medium of the lock slots.
,2. A device of the character described comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a receptacle, extensions on said plate, said extensions being extended back upon the plate toward each other to provide sockets and having their inner edges disposed in spaced relation to the plate, each of said extensions having a lock slot in one end thereof, and a resilient handle having its end portions detachably disposed in the sockets the extremities of said end portions being disposed in the lock slots.
3. A device of the character described comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a utensil, extensions on said plate, said extensions being extended back upon the plate toward each other to provide sockets and having their inner edges disposed in spaced relation to the plate, each of said extensions having a lock slot in one end thereof, and a length of resilient wire bent upon itself to provide spaced arms constantly urged away from each other, the end portion of each arm extending in angular relation to the body of the arm and adapted to be disposed in said sockets, the extremities of each of said end portions being enlarged, and extended in opposite directions, said extensions being yieldably urged into the sockets and manually urged in opposite directions through said lock slots.
.ln testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature. 1
