Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEROME W. ROPP AND RANSOM o. KIBBY, oF-ELYRIA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,766, dated Marth 11, 1873.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JEROME W. Ron and RANSOM OIKIBBY, of Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have jointly invented a new and useful Breeching-Stay Fastening and Buckle fonflarness, of which the following is a specification:
Ourinvention relates to a fastening for breeching-stays and hip-strap of harness; and our improvement consists of a buckle device having side loops to which the breeching-stays are secured and a holding-guide for the hipstrap, the advantage of which improvement being the saving in expense of the usual uniting-ring and about twelve inches of leather, including the usual loops and the necessary work in putting them together; and also to dispense with the buckle and its upward-projecting tongue, and thus prevent the catching of the horses tail on the lines of the driver.
We are aware that a breeching-loop has been made for uniting the back-pad or harness-tree and belly-girth, and the hamestug with the side-strap passing to the breechingring; but suohdevice we do not claim, as it cannot be used for uniting the breechingstays to the hip-strap; and, moreover, is not designed for the purpose and place for which our improvement is intended.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of our improved holding device as applied to the harness. Fig. 2 represents a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section, Fig. 4 a cross-section, and Fig. 5 a view in perspective, of the rear side of the device.
The holder is cast of a single piece with a cap-plate, a, from the ends of which extend parallel holdingarms b, which also form inwardprojecting sidesc to the cap, with the ends of the arms I; united by cross-bars d. These arms are curved inward slightly so as to form a space between the cap-plate and the cross-bars for the hipstrap A to pass through, and with the sides 0 and cross-bars d, hold said strap snugly beneath the cap a, a short inward-projecting pin, 0, from which enters the desired hole f in the hip-strap and secures it. Loops g 9 project from the side plates 0, into which the stays h are secured while their lower ends are united to the breeching-plate t, and thus connected with the hip-strap A;
The guide and socket for the hip-strap keep the latter straight, and it can be easily detached from its holding-pin e by simplybend ing the strap and pushing or pulling it through the guide, when'the pin e will enter the hole.
The device forms aneat finish and avoids the objectionable buckle with its upward-projecting tongue so annoying in catching the tail of the horse.
As a new article of manufacture, it can be furnished the trade and used with about half the expense of the usual attachment and Work.
Having described our invention, we claim- The breeching-stay fastening, having the side-projecting loops 9 g for the stays h h, and the continuous curved side plates b c,'cap a, cross-bars d d, and projecting pin e, for fastening the short stays and the hip-strap, and to obtain the advantages herein set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEROME W. ROPP. RANSOM 0. KIBBY.
Witnessesi N. L. JOHNSON, J. E. BURNELL.
