Description
UNITED STATES TENT EEICE.
\ DAVID W. NOYES, OF BENNINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-CAR VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,756, dated March 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known thatLDAvID WooDARD NoYEs, of Bennington, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Dust-ExcludingCar; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Oll.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a front view of my window-sash. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section, of the same.
This invention'has relation tocar-windows; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a hinged sash holding-glass, and constructed with openings in the sides, top, andbottom for the circulation of air, substan' tially as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the the frame of a car or other window, having a ledge, B, against which rests a folded sheet of wire-cloth, C, holding between itsfolds a sheet of wool or raw cotton, U', to exclude the dust, smoke, and rays of the sun, while allowing ample ventilation. The wool is to be preferred as being less liable to take fire from l the escaping sparks from the locomotive. D designates the hinged sash, having its hinges 0n the outside, and attached to the external part or face ot' the window-frame. The sash lits closely into the window-frame, serving to hold the wire cloth in place, and it projects beyond the face of the window-frame, and has slots cl d at the top, sides, and bottom, to allow ventilation when the sash is closed. When closed the sash may be held by a button, T, or its equivalent.
The herein-described improvements may be applied to house-windows, as well as to car-windows, the sash being made .to hold any required number of panes oi glass.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hinged projecting window-sash D, having the ventilationapertures d at the sides, bottom, and top, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence yof two witnesses.
DAVID WOODARD NOYES.
