Be it known that I, CARL HENDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Registering Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates to sheet registering mechanism for printing presses of that type in which substantiall fixed guides are employed for effecting ront and side register of the sheets.
The main and primary object of the invention is the provision of registering mechanism the parts of which areso coordinated and organized as to insure greater accuracy of register notwithstanding the necessity of overcoming the inertia of the sheet by the rapidly-rotating impression cylinder of the machine at the time of engagement of its grippers with the sheet.
The invention also aims to provide registering mechanism the actuation of which is controlled by the sheetitself and dependent upon the accurate registering of the sheet, thereby preventing feeding of the sheets to the impression cylinder until the accurate positioning of the sheets has been accomplished. v
A further object of the invention is the provision of simple and efficient means for retaining the sheet in position after it has been brought into register, and while so held to present the front edge thereof to the blte of the grippers. The passage of the sheet to the impression cylinder without disturbance of its registered position is thus insured.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and finally pointed out in the appended claims. It will be understood, however, that the structure illustrated and described is but a schematic adaptation of the invention, and that the latter issusceptible of embodiment in other forms,'so that the invention is not to be limited to the particular embodiment shown and described.

Referring now in detail to the accompanyng drawings, the numeral 10 designates the impresslon cylinder of a printing couple to which the sheets are fed in regular succes- SlOIl from a stack 11. Automatic means are conventionally illustrated for this purpose, the same including a plurality of suction feed belts 12 designed to pick up the sheets individually from the stack 11 and advance the same toward the impression cylinder 10, the sheets assing over a guide 13 in proximity to w ich is arranged a suction feed roll 14 of known construction. In advance of the suction feed roll 14 is arranged a plurality of feed rolls 15, said rolls being disposed at a slight angle to the line of travel of the sheet and thus adapted to impart to the sheet a side-wise movement, whereby the same is brought into contact with a side gage 16 adj ustably mounted above the peripheries of the rolls 15. By means of the gage 16 a preliminary side register is given to the sheet, and as the sheets are advanced by the rolls 15 they contact with a transversely extending stop 17 which retards the forward movement of each sheet until the same is engaged by gripper mechanism 18 carried by a plurality of endless belts 19 operating over pulleys 20 of suitable construction. The stop 17 is guided for vertical movement and is timed to move out of the way of the sheet through the me dium of Geneva gears 21 and tog le connections 22 between said gears and t e stop 17, and said stop is returned to its normal position across the path of the sheet by means of a spring 23. The normal position of the toggle is fixed by the stud 23. As the sheet is advanced by the gripper mechanism 18 its trailing end is caug t by a supporting table 24 in advance of which is arranged a suction feed roll 25. This roll is also of known construction. When the sheet is released by the grippers 18 it is deposited on a feed table 26, the sheet being moved forwardlyover said table by the feed roll 25,
and from the feed table 26 the sheet is delivered to the impression cylinder 10 in a manner hereinafter described.
Associated with the feed table 26 are the instrumentalities for effecting both front and side final register of the sheet. These include a pluralit of front guides 27 and a side guide'28, sai guides bein mounted for vertical movement to permit eedin of the sheet to the impression roll 10. o effect proper front register it is, of course, necessary that the front edge of the sheet shall ing couple, and one of these feeding couples' is so located as to be. adjacent to each side portion of the sheet, and are clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. The eccentrics 31 are mounted upon the stub shafts 33, while the eccentrics 32 are mounted on similar shafts 34 arranged, respectively, above and below the surface of the feed table 26. The shafts 33. and 34 carry intermeshing spur gears 35 and 36, respectively, and the gear 36 of each feeding couple is in mesh with a spur gear 37 carried by a shaft 38 which receives its ower from any suitable source. By means of the eccentrics 31 and 32 a fourmotion feed is imparted to the dogs 29 and shoes 30, that is to say, each of these elements moves toward the sheet, advances with the sheet, moves awa from the sheet, and then moves backwar y in analogy to the well known sewing machine feed. As the dogs and shoes move toward the sheet the latter is clamped between the same, and in their advancing movement the sheet advances with them. It will be understood, of
course, that the dogs and shoes operate at a sufliciently high s eed to thus provide an intermittent feed fbr the-sheets toward the front guides 27 and into contact with the same. The engaging faces of the shoes 29 are longitudinall convex while the engaging faces of the s oes 30 are to facilitate the clamping 0 plane, whereby the sheet between these elements, and said shoes 30 are also provided with rearwardly-extending guides 39 received b grooves 40, whereby the shoes 30 are he d for movement in a straight line during their operation.
The side register of the sheet is effected b means of a dog 41 and a shoe 42 (Fig. 5 constructed in all respects similar to the dogs 29 and the shoes 30, and cotiperating with each other in the same way as the dogs 29 coiiperate with the shoes 30. The shoe 42 is mounted upon an eccentric 43 carried by a stub shaft 44, which shaft also carries a miter gear 45 in mesh with a similar gear 46 carrie by a stub shaft 47, and on said shaft 47 is a spur gear 48 which meshes with the spur gear 37 of the feedin couple which is in closest proximity to sai guide 28. The dog 4l,is mounted upon an eccentric 49 carried by a stub shaft 50 having also mounted thereon a miter gear 51, and said gear 51 is in mesh with a similar car 52, the latter being carried by a stub s aft 53. The opposite end of the stub shaft 53 carries a miter gear 54 which meshes with asimilar gear 55 mounted on a vertical stub shaft 56. At the lower end of the shaft 56, is provided a miter gear 57 meshing with a similar gear 58, and said gear 58 is carried by the shaft 47. Through the train of gearing which has been just now described it will be seen that power 1s communicated from the spur gear 37 to the do 41 and the shoe 42, and these two elements ave a four-motion feed the same as the. dogs 29 and the shoes 30. They are positioned, however, to work in a line at right angles to the line of movement of the dogs 29 and 30, and when the sheet is clamped between the do 41 and the shoe 42 the same may be move sidewise into contact with the side guide 28, and thereby efi'ect side register of the sheets.
The action of the feed .dogs and shoes of the respective sets of feeding couples 29-30 and 41-442 is to present the sheets to the front .and side guides 27 and 28, res ectively, by acting in alternation on the s eet and thereby obtaining step by step front and side register of the sheet. When this has been effected they should be rendered inactive. It is proposed to accomplish this through the medium of electroresponsive devices the actuation of which is controlled by the sheet itself. Each of the front guides has a circuit-closing switch lever or detector 59 pivotally mounted thereon, as at 60, which lever controls an electrical circuit 61 wherein is included a source of current 62, I
such as a battery, and an electromagnet 63. The lever 59 coiiperates with a fixed contact 64 connected to one leg of the circuit, the other leg of the circuit being connected to the lever 59. The lower end of said lever 59 is in the path of movement of the sheet, and as said sheet advances its contact with lever 59 swings the. same upon its pivot 60 so that.
the upper end of the lever engages the fixed contact and closes the circuit at this point. The electromagnet 63 of each of the circuits 61 is thus energized each time the circuit is closed at the contact 64, and correspondingly deenergized when the c1rcu1t is opened at this point. A similar c1rcu1t closing switch lever or detector 65 is also carried by the side guide 28, being pivotally mounted thereon as at 66, and said lever 65 controls an electrical circuit 67 which includes a source of current 68, as a battery, and an electromagnet69. The" lever 65 is connected to one leg of said circuit 67, while the other leg is connected to a fixed contact 70, the electromagnet 69 being energized when the lever 65 engages the contact point 70, and being deenergized when the circuit is opened at this point. It will thus be seen that each of the circuits 61 and 67 is a localized circuit, operating independently of the other circuits, a (1 being controlled by a make andbreak evice independent of the make and break devices of the other circuits,
The shoes 30 and 42 are mounted for relative bodily movement toward and from their respective dogs 29 and 41. When moved from the dogs with which they cooperate, the shoes 30 and 42 no longer exert a clamping action on the sheet, and the feeding couples are rendered inactive or non-feeding. This moving of the shoes 30 and 42 is effected by shifting their respective shafts 34 and 44, which shifting of the shaft 34 is accomplished by levers 71 plvotally mounted as at 72. similar lever 73 pivotally mounted at 74 is connected to the shaft 44 of the shoe 42. The levers 71 and 73 are actuated by the electromagnets 63 and 69,
respectively, the armatures 75 of the electromagnets 63 being mounted on the levers 71, while the armature 76 of the electromagnet 69 is similarly mounted on the lever 73. Each lever 71 carries a contact point 77 which cotiperates with a fixed contact point 78, and the lever 73 has a contact point 79 which coiiperates with a contact point 80.
The contact points 77 and 78 andthe points 79 and 80 are all included in an electrical circuit 81, which also includes a source of current 82, such as a battery, and a plurality of electromagnets 83. The contact points are arranged in series relatlon to each other, and until all of the contact points 77 and 79 are engaged with their respective fixed contacts 78 and 80, the circuit 81 will not be closed. It will be noted also that the electromagnets 83' are in series relation with respect to each other; therefore, when the circuit 81 is closed these electromagnets are simultaneously energized.
As the sheet is fed forwardly and laterally over the feed table 26 it is brought into contact with the circuit closing levers 59 and 65, respectively, and as each of these brought into engagement with the fixed contacts 78 and 80. s the levers 71 and 73 are thus swung on their ivots, the shoes 30 and 42 are moved slight y away from the dogs 29 and 41 with which feeding of the sheets thereby is stopped.
After the sheet has been registered at the last guide it is desirable that the same shall be retained in such position. A plurality of sheet-holding devices 84 is employed for this purpose, each of said devices being provided with an engaging foot 85-designed to press against the sheet and hold the same on the feed table. The sheet-holding devices 84 are carried by a rod 86suitably supported above the feed table 26, and each of said devices 84 carries the armature 87 of one of the electromagnets 83. The armatures 87 should be of suflicientweight to hold the engaging 'feet 85 of the devices 84 normally elevated above the feed table 26, and thereby permit passage of the sheet therebeneath, and when the electromagnets 83 are energized the attraction of the armatures by the electromagnets will force the engaging feet 85 downwardly .ing included in an electrical circuit 90 connected to a source of battery, and in which circuit is also included a plurality of electromagnets 92. One of the elcctromagnets 92 is provided for each of the front guides 27, and the armature 93 of each of said electromagnets is connected to the front guide 27 with which said electromagnet is associated, The electroma nets 92 are arranged. above the guides 2%, and when they are energized their armatures 93 will be drawn upwardly, and the guides 27 thereby moved upwardly and out of the forward path of the sheet on the feed table 26. An electromagnet 94 is also provided for the side guide 28, being arranged in the same relation thereto as the electromagnets 92 are varranged with relation to the front guides27, said electromagnet 94 being also included in the circuit 90. The armature 95 of the electromagnet 94 is associated with current 91, such as a they cooperate. The
the side guide 28, and when said electromagnet 94 is energized it induces an upward movement in the side guide 28 by the attraction of the armature 95.
It will now be understood that when the sheet has moved to registered position its contact with the circuit-closing levers 59 and 65 renders the feeding couples inoperative. This is due to the actuation of the levers 71 and 73 by the electromagnets .63 and 69. When this condition arises the circuit 81 is closed and the electromagnets 83 are energized. They act upon the sheet-holding devices 84 to clamp the sheet in engagement with the feed table, and thereby hold the sheet inits registered position. When this clamping action of the sheet-holding devices occurs the-circuit 90 also becomes closed,-the electromagnets 92 and 94 included therein become energized, and the front and side guides 27 and 28 are thereby moved upwardly and out of the path of movement of the sheet.
The sheet is now ready for presentation to the grippers of the impression cylinder 10. To eifect this presentation the feed table 26 includes a lurality of under feed slides 96. With certain of these slides the sheet-holding devices 84 cofiperate to retain the sheet in registered position, said sheet-holding devices being so mounted with respect to the slides 96' as to move therewith. At the under side of each of the slides 96 is provided a rack 97 engaged by a segmental gear 98, said gears being carried by a shaft 99 to which a rocker arm 100 is connected. The arm 100 is provided with a contact roller 101 which travels upon the face of a cam 102 associated with the impression cylinder 10. During the rotation of the impression cylinder 10 the cam 102 actuates the arm 100'to rock the shaft 99 and the segmental gears 98 carried thereby, and this results in a reciprocation of the feed slides 96. On the forward movement of these slides 96 the front edge of the sheet is carried toward the impression cylinder'lO, the grippers of /the cylinder 10 being timed to engage the sheet and draw it forwardly from the slides 96. The slides 96 are then returned to their normal positions in the feed table 26.
' It is essential that the several instrumentalities by which the operations last above described are accomplished shall remain set until'the registered sheet has been taken by the grippers, otherwise there will be a premature restoration of these instrumentalities to their normal functioning positions. These instrumentalities are controlled by the switch levers 59 and 65 and their contacts 64 and with which they coiiperate. The levers and the contacts referred to, therefore, should be held in engagement until the registered sheet has been delivered to the grippers. For this purpose a holding dog or detent 103 is provided for each of the levers 59 said detents being carried by a rock shaft 104, and a similar holding do or detent 105, mounted upon a rock sha t 106 is provided for the switch lever 65 of the side guide 28. The shafts104 and 106 are connected for operation in unison by a pair of mitered gears 107 and said shafts are rocked by a tappet arm 108 adapted to be engaged by a stud or pin 109 carried by 'the impression roll 10. The faces of the holding dogs 103 and 105 with which the levers 59 and 65 contact are beveled, so that as said levers ride up these beveled faces on the upward movement of the front and side guides 27 and 28, respectively, the upper ends of said switch levers will be forced toward the stationar contacts with which they coiiperate an held in engagement therewith. This maintains the circuits 61 and 67 closed while the front and side guides 27 and 28 are in their elevated positions; the several electromagnets remain energized, and only when the circuits are broken at the levers 59 and 65 and their contacts 64 and 70 will the electromagnets become deenergized. As the stud 109 engages the tappet arm 108 the latter is lifted with a resultant rocking of the shafts 104 and 106. This swings the holding dogs 103 and 105 away from the switch levers 59 and 65, whereupon the latter separate from their respective fixed contacts, and the circuits 61 and 67 thereby become broken. The several electromagnets now become inactive; the levers 71 and 73 fall away from the electromagnets 63 and 69, restoring the shoes 30 and 42 to active relation with respect to their co5perating dogs 29 and 41, thereby restoring the feedin couples to active position; the sheetho ding devices 84 are raised to permit passage of the next succeeding sheet to be registered, and the front and side guides 27 and 28 move downwardly and in position to register the next sheet as it is advanced over the feed table 26. a
From the foregoing the operation of the herein described registering mechanism may be briefly summarlzed as follows: After each sheet leaves the stack 11 it is given a preliminary side register by the rolls 15, the
axes of which are arran ed at an angle to the line of movement 0 the sheet, and by such movement the sheet is brought into contact with the side guide 16. The sheet is then advanced to the feed table 26 where it encounters the intermittently-operating feeding couples made up of the dogs 29 and 41 and their co5perating shoes 30 and 42. These elements effect final front and side register of the sheet bringing the same into contact with the front and side guides 27 and 28, whereupon the switch levers 59 and 65 are operated to close the circuits 61 and 67 Th s serves to render the feeding cou- 1 ,sevam ples inoperative also; to clamp the sheet in engagement with the feed slldes 96, and to raise the front and side guides 27 and 28; after which, the cam 102 being properly timed to swing the arm 100, the guides 96 advance'the front edge of the sheet so registered to the bite of the grippers for delivering the sheet to the impression cylinder. On the actuation of the tappet arm 108 the controlling circuits 61 and 67 are opened, and the several instrumentalities are restored to their normal functioning relations to act upon the next succeeding sheet.
With the construction herein described op erating in the manner set forth, it will be evident that greater accuracy of register is assured, due to the operation of'the mechanism being dependent on the sheet itself. The sheet must contact each of the front and side guides before the feeding couples are rendered inactive, and although the feeding couple controlled from a particular guide may cease its feeding action on the sheet by reason of the latter operating the circuit closer of that guide, the sheet will not be clamped to the feed slides of the table, nor will the front and side guides be raised to permit passa e of the sheet to the impression roll, until the sheet operates the circuit closers of all the guides. This occurs only when both front and side register of the sheet has been attained.
It will be understood that while the angularly disposed feed rolls 15 are illustrated as arranged to effect side reglster of the sheet against a side gage 16 at the left hand side of the path of sheet travel, side register at the right hand edge of the sheet may be substituted, if desired, by reversing the obliquity of the rolls as to center line of travel either by shifting the rolls in their frame or by turning the frame of rolls over, a corresponding shifting of the side gage being likewise effected, or a duplicate of the side gage 16 being provided on the right hand side of the frame.
I claim:
1. In a printing press, the combination with a normally stationary feed table, of means for effecting thereon register of a sheet including a guide, means for engag ing the sheet to feed the same over the table to said guide, means automatically to intermit the operation of the feeding means when registration has been secured, and means to move the table to deliver the registered sheet.
2. In a printing press, the combination with a normally stationary feed table, of means for effecting thereon register of a sheet including a guide, means for engaging the sheet to feed the same over the table to said guide, means controlled by the sheet for rendering the feeding means inoperative when register of the sheet has been effected,
and means to move the table to deliver the registered sheet.
3. In a printing press, the combination with a normally stationary feed table, of means for effecting thereon front register of a sheet and including a front guide, means for intermittently engaging the sheet to feed the same to said guide, and means for rendering the feeding means inoperative when register of the sheet has been effected.
4. In a printing press, the combination with a normally stationary feed table, of means foreffecting thereon front register of a sheet and including a front guide, means for intermittently engaging the sheet to feed the same to said guide, and means for ren dering the feeding means inoperative when register of the sheet has been effected, means to clamp the registered sheet to the table, and means to move the table and clamped sheet to deliver the sheet and simultaneously to release the same from the clamping means.
5. In a printing ress, the combination with a normally stationary but movable feed table, of means for effecting thereon register of a sheet including a guide, means for engaging the sheet to feed the same over the table to said guide, means for clamping the registered sheet to the table to preserve the register thereof, and means for moving the table to deliver thesheet while held in registered position.
6. In a printing press, the combination with a normally stationary feed table, of means for effecting on said table register of a sheet including a guide, means for engaging the sheet to feed the same over said table to said guide, means for holding the sheet stationary relative to the table for preserving the register of the sheet, and means controlled by the printing couple for moving the table and presenting the registered sheet while held in registered position on the table.
7. In a printing press, the combination with a normally stationary feed table, of means for effectlng on said table register of a sheet including a guide, means for engaging the sheet to feed the same over said table to said guide, means for rendering the feeding means inactive when register of the sheet has been effected, means for holding the sheet stationary relative to the table for pro serving the register of the sheet, and means controlled by the printing couple for moving the table and presenting the registered sheet while held in registered position on the table.
8.- In a printing press, the combination of means for effecting front register of a sheet including a guide, a four-motion feeding device acting intermittently upon the sheet for advancing the same to said guide, and means associated with the guide for rendering said four-motion feeding device inoperative when register of the sheet has been effected.

16. In a printing press, the combination of means for effectin front register of a sheet including a vertlcally movable guide, means for feeding the sheet to said guide, means for holding the sheet in registered position, means for raising said guide to feed the samestep by step to said guide, permit delivery of the registered sheet and means for imparting a four-motion feed to said engaging means, and means for rendering said feeding means inoperative when register of the sheet has been effected.
11. In a printing press, the combination of means for effecting side and front register of a sheet including guides, continuously actsheet to feed the same step by step forwardly and laterally to said guides, and means for automatically rendering said feeding means inoperative when register of the sheet has been effected.
12. In a printing press, the combinationof means for efiecting front register of a sheet including a guide, feed dogs arranged above the plane of the path of movement of the sheet and adapted to engage the upper surface ofthe sheet, shoes arranged below-the plane of the path of the sheet and adapted to engage the underside of the sheet, means for intermittently effecting engagement of said dogs and shoes with the sheet to advance the latter to said guides, and means for rendering said dogs and shoes 1noperative when register of the sheet has been effected. I
13. In a printing press, the comblnation of means for effecting front register of a sheet including a guide, feeding couples adapted to engage the sheet for advanclng the same step by step to said guides, said feeding couples each including a dog and a I shoe arranged at opposite sides of the sheet and adapted to intermittently engage the same, and means for rendering said feeding couples inactive when register of the sheet has been effected.
14. In a printing press, the combination of means for effecting front register of a sheet including a guide, feeding couples adapted to engage the sheet to advance the same step by step to said guide, each of said feeding couples including a feed dog and a shoe arranged at opposite sides of the path of movement of the sheet and adapted to clamp the sheet to advance the same toward the guide,-means for imparting a four-motion movement to said dogs and shoes, and means means controlled by the sheet for controllin r the ,action of said feeding, holding am guide-operating means.
'17. In a printing press, the combination of means for effecting front and side register of a sheet including front and side guides, means for intermittently advancing the sheet to said front guide, means operating at right angles to the sheet advancing means to intermittently feed the sheet to said side guide, and means associated with the front and side registering means controlled by the sheet for rendering the sheet-advancing and sidefeeding means inactive when front and side register of the sheet has been effected.
18. In a printing press, the combination of means for effecting front and side register of a sheet including front and side guides, intermittently operating feeding means for advancing the sheet to said front guide, intermittently operating feeding means for presenting the sheet to said side guide, the side feeding means operating at right angles to the movement of the sheet advancing means, 'means for rendering the sheet advancing and side feeding means respectively inactive independently of each other when front and side register of the sheet respectively has been effected, and means for delivering the registered sheet.
19. In a printing press, the combination of means for effecting front register of a sheet including a guide, means for effecting side register of the sheet and also including a guide, feeding couples for advancing the sheet step by step to said front guide, a feeding couple operatin at right angles to the sheet advancing feeging couples for feeding the sheet step by step laterally to said side guide and means associated with the front and side guides controlled by the sheet for rendering said feeding couples inactive in dependently of each other when front and side register of the sheet has been effected.
20. In a printing press, the combination of means for effecting front register of a sheet including a front guide, means for effecting side register of the sheet and including a side guide, means for advancing the sheet to said front guide, means operating at right angles to said advancing means for feeding the sheet laterally to said side guide, means associated with the front and side guides controlled by the sheet for rendering the sheet-advancing means and the side-feeding means respectively inactive inde ndently of each other when front and side register of the sheet has been effected, and means actuated after register has been effected to deliver the sheet.
21. In a printing press, the combination of means for effecting front register of a sheet including a front guide, means for effecting side register of the sheet including a side guide, means for feeding the sheet to said front guide, means operating at right angles to sald feeding means for feeding the sheet laterall to said side guide, means for holding the siieet in registered osition, and means controlled by the sheet or rendering the respective sheet-feeding means inactive and for'actuating the sheet holding means when front and side register of the sheet has been'eifected.
22. In a printing press, the combination of means for effecting front register of a sheet including a front guide, means for effecting side register of the sheet including a side guide, said front guide being vertically movable, means for feeding the sheet to said feeding means for feeding the sheet laterallyto said side guide, means. for .holding the sheet in registered position, means controlled by the sheet for rendering the respective sheet-feeding means inactive and for actuating the sheet holding means when front and side register ofthe sheet has been effected, and means for raising said front ide to permit delivery of the registered s eet, said sheet-controlled means also rendering active said guide raising means. In a printing press, the combination with means for effecting preliminary sheet register and comprising a stationary side guide, a removable front guide, a forwarding table consisting of a series of parallel rolls extending at an angle of slightly less than ninety degrees to the side guide and arranged to shift the sheet toward the side guide as it approaches the front uide, and means to f rom the path of the ter is secured, an endless conveyer and grippers thereon to take the preliminarily re 'stered sheets, and a suction device to furt 1er advance the sheet when released by said grippers, of a feed table to receive the preliminarily registered sheet, front and side guides, feed devices to advance the sheets to the guides to effect final register, means to render the sheet feeding devices inoperative as and when final re ster is secured, and means to deliver the nally registered sheet to the rinting couple.

In a printin press, the combination with means for eficting preliminary sheet register and comprising a stationary side guide, a removable front guide, a forwardmg table consisting of a series of parallel rolls extending at an angle of slightly less than ninety degrees to the side guide and arranged to shift the sheet toward the side guide as it approaches the front guide, and means to remove the front ide from the path of the sheet after relimlnary front and side register is secure ofa normally stationary feed table to receive the preliminarily registered sheets, front and side guides, feed devices to advance the sheets step by step to the guides and effect final register, means controlled by the sheets to render the sheet feeding devices individually inoperative as and when final register is secured of that portion of the sheet acted upon by the respective feeding devices, means brought into action concurrently with the stoppage of the feeding and acting to clam the registered sheet to the feed table, an means to advance the feed table together with the clamped sheet to deliver the finally registered sheet to the printing couple.

In aprintin press, the combination with means for e ecting preliminary sheet register and comprising a stationary side guide, a removable front guide, a forwarding table consisting of a serles of parallel rolls extending at an angle of slightly less than ninety degrees to the side guide and arranged to shift the sheet toward the side guide as it approaches the front guide, and means to remove the front guide from the path of the sheet after preliminary front and side register is secured, of a normally stationary feed table to receive the preliminarily registered sheets, front and side guides, feed devices to advance the sheets step by step to the guides and effect final register, means controlled by the sheets to render the sheet feeding devices individually inoperative as and when final register is secured of that portion of the sheet acted upon by the respective feeding devices, said last named means comprising detector elements associated with the guides and forming switches for electric circuits including magnets operatively connected with said sheet feed devices, means controlled by said detectors and the circuits and brought into action concurrently with the stoppage of the feeding and acting to clamp the registered sheet to the feed table, and means to advance the feed'table together with the clamped sheet to deliver the finally registered sheet to the printing couple.
