2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HILLIARD, VINCENT, OF SPUR, TEXAS.
COTTON-PICKING DEVICE.
Application filed February 18, 1920.
- T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE HILLIARD VIN- GENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spur, in the county of Dickens'and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Picking Devices,.of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. V
Thisinvention relates to certain improvements in cotton picking devices, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be readily and conveniently engaged with the outer extremity of the.
digit of the hand.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a digit encircling band provided with means to afiord protection to the opposite sides of the digit and wherein a picking element is carried by the band.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the. several parts of my improved cotton picking device whereby certain important. advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation diagrammatically illustrating a hand having applied thereto a picking device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is .a'view in top plan of one of my improved devices in applied position;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in plan of one of my improved devices in an extended or flattened condition;
Fig. 4 is a view in top plan of a picking device constructed in accordance with a further embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 5 is a view in bottom plan of the device as illustrated in Fig. 4E; and
Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation of a de vice as disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5.
As disclosed in the accompanying draw- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1921. Serial No. 359,559.
ings, B denotes a split band adapted to encircle the digit of a hand adjacent the top thereof. One endportion of the band is provided with the longitudinally spaced and,
transversely disposed slots 1 through which is adapted to be threaded the opposite end portion of the band whereby said band B ,may be adjusted in accordance with the requirements of practice and in a manner to assure an effective engagement with the digit of the hand upon which it is applied.
The band B, at substantially diametrically opposed points, is provided with the rearwardly directed arms or extensions 2 which are adapted to overlie the side faces of the digit and to afford protection therefor. The extremities of the arms or extensions 2 areprovided with the slots or openings 3 through which is directed a second band B adapted to encircle the digit. The band B is split and one end portion thereof is provided with the longitudinally spaced openings 4 through which is threaded the opposite end portion of the band B so that said band B may be readily adjusted as the occasions of practice may necessitate.
The central portion of the band B and substantially midway between the arms or extensions 2 is provided with the openings 5 spaced in a direction circumferentially of the band B and through which extend the free end portions of a picking element E. The element E is substantially U-shape in form and the central part of its intermediate portion a is pinched or otherwise flexed to afford an outstanding loop or extension 6.
Coacting with the band B and the side members I) of the element E is a bracing strap or member M which operates to maintain the element E substantially rigid so that the efiiciency of such element E during a working operation is materially increased.
In practice it is intended that one of my improved devices be applied to when necessary, a pinching action may be created to remove the cotton, although this is not necessary under all conditions as the formation or shape of the element E in a the extremi-' ties of all of the digits of the hand'so that,
upon the side members I) of the element E or separating the same and which operation is due to the fact that the element E is pliable and possesses a certain degree of inherent resiliency.
The bands B and B, together with the arms or extensions 2, also operate to eiiectively protect the digit of the hand against the burs and which burs, as is well known, are hard and sharp.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figs 5 and 6, the band A is substantially the same construction as the band B hereinbefore referred to and is provided with the rearwardly directed arms or extensions 2 provided with the slots 7 having their major axes extending in a direction circumferentially of the band B.
' The extremities of a )rotec'tin stra 3 8 are threaded through said slots 7 and said strap extends across'the back of a digit to provide a further shield or guard.
E denotes a picking element of substantially the same type as the element E here inbefore referred to, and coacting with the sidemembers b of said, element E is a loop 9 adapted to bridge the back of a digit whereby; said loop serves to maintain the element E in requisite position. One end portion of-the loop 9 is provided with an extension 10 in locking engagement with the band A through a slot 1 therein whereby further means are provided to maintain the element E substantially rigid.
From the foregoing description, it is- I claim 1. A cotton picking device comprising a digit engaging member and a picking element consisting of a length of material arranged in substantially a U-shape and having its extremities secured to said member.
2. A cotton picking device comprising a digit engaging member and a picking element consisting of a length of material arranged in substantially a ,U-shape and having its extremities secured to said member, said length of material being bendable.
3. A cotton picking device comprising a digit engaging member and a'substantially U-shaped picking element having its extremities secured to said member, the central portion of the intermediate part of said element being provided with an extension.
4. A cotton picking device comprising a digit engaging member and a substantially U-shaped picking element having its extremities secured to said member, the central portion of the intermediate part ofthe element being provided with an outwardly extending loop.
5. A cotton picking device comprising a digit engaging member and a substantially U-shaped picking element having its extremities secured to said member, said digit engaging member being provided with extensions adapted to overlie the side portions of the digit to which the member is applied. 7 V
6. A cotton picking device comprising a digit encircling member and a substantially U-shaped picking element having its extremities engaged with the digit encircling member.
