DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL H. BowLzER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Drinking- Fountains, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The essential objectoi? this invention is to provide a drinking fountain of the jet type which shall be thoroughly sanitary. More specifically, this invention providesa drinking fountain having an angle jet which is controlled by a manually operated valve and embodies means controlled by the valve for extending over and protecting the orifice Other objects will become apparent in the tollowingdescription which relates to the drawings, illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention. The essential characteristics are summarized in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drinking fountain embodying my invention, a portionof the bowl of the fountain being broken away for clearness of illustration; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the drinking fountain illustrating the jet orifice and a protecting devijcetherefor; Fig. 3 is a detail in the nature of sectional plan of a portion of the bowl for operating'the protector for the jet orifice; Fig. a'isa sectional detail of a suitable valve and operating mechanismwhich may be used with my invention. Describing the invention by the use of reference characters, 1 indicates a suitable 1 bowl for a drinking fountain having a downwardly projecting boss 2 into which is fitted a sleeve 3liaving an impertorate cap 4 partially closing and protecting the waste outlet :t'romv the bowl in the usual manner.
The lower portion of the sleeve 3. is threaded to receive a nut 5 which clamps the sleeve in position. Under an overhanging flange formed by a cap Lisa suitable washer 6. A similar-washer 7 is'fitt'ed between the nut 55 and boss 2. Internal threadson'the sleeve receive a suitabledrain pipe 10 leading the waste water awayfrom the bowl.
At one sideof the bowl is :formed a substantially horizontal ;"'shoulder 12 thIOIlgh which projects a short nozzle or jet member 15 rigid with ,a curved tubular member .16 suitably secured to the bjowhas shown parreceive at its lower end a threaded connection of a valve 20. EA ma 17 threaded onto anism shown, the handle is shown as havinga hub 26 threaded to astem 27 slidable through a suitable guide nut 28 carried bythe :valve body, while on the inner end of the stem is carried the valve closure member 30 cooperating with a seat 32formed integral with the valve body by walls separating it into chambers in the usuahmanner. The valve opens by drawing the stem outwardly against the action ofa spring 34,
under compression between the closure 30 and guide nut 28. A cap 35 threaded onto the valve body and fitting around the stem carries a cam surface 36 against which is fitted a roller 37.connected with the stem member. The outer side of the rollers bears against a corresponding surface 39 of a washer-like member 40 forming the hub 26 of the handle andhaving a skirt-likeportion and loosely embracing a cylindricalsurface of the cap 35. It will be seen that rotation of the handle in the direction of the I arrow in Fig. 1, (that is in a direction to move the roller 37 away from one looking at Fig. 4) causesan outward movement of the stem 27 opening thevalve correspondingly. l
The opening of the valve for an amount sufiicient to form a suitable drinking jet may be accomplished through a quarter of a revolution of the handle, 25, or less if desired. This movement is used to remove or raise a protecting member above the discharge orifice, during the time water is issuing therefrom. To accomplish this, I have shown a simple mechanism which will now be described.
Extending approximately tangential of the bowl, near the discharge orifice in the jet member 15, I have arranged a rockshaft carriedin suitablebosses 51, preferably integral-with the bowl. On thisrock shaft,
is carried aninverted saucer or spoon like member 55. directly over the dischargej orificeand adapted inone position to lie upon the 'nut 17 surrounding the jetto closely fit the same, 1 while entirely covering the dis ticularly in Fig. 2, and being adapted to i charge orifice, and effectively protecting it from dust, dirt or any unsanitary'drippings from the mouth of the" user of the fountain. On the end of the rock shaft 50 is an integral rock arm 52 to which is pivotally connected a link 54, in turn pivotally connected at its lower end to an car 58 rigid with the handle 25.
It will be seen, therefore, that as the val e handle is moved in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 to allow water to flow through the pipe 21, the passage member 16 and fromthe discharge orifice of the jet member 15, the protecting member 55 will automatically be raised at the same time to the position shown inthe drawings. Upon closing the valve which movement is assisted by the spring 34, this jet protector 55 is brought into a horizontal position entirely covering the discharge orifice and jet member.
In the use of the angle jet-,7 as it is commercially known, it will be seen that the drippings from the mouth naturally fall into the bowl away from the jet orifice, but as the user moves his face over the bowl, drippings would frequently fall directly onto this orifice; but as the face is positioned so that the mouth may catch the stream while drinking and as the valve and 7 cover 55,-are closed immediately thereafter, 1t Wlll be seen that it is practically impos- S1blB'1I1 the ordinary use of the device for cover therefor adapted to be raised from the drippings to fall upon the jet orifice itself. It will also be noted that the jet is raised fromthe surrounding portion of the bowl and as the protector is lifted, anything which maybe on the protector falls or flows therefrom away from the jet orifice onto the lower surfaces surrounding the same.
I-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim is '1. In a drinking fountain, the combination with a bowl having a recess on the outer periphery thereof, of a jet orifice member, an inlet conduit leading thereto, there being a portion of said conduit lying. within said recess and positioned thereby, amovable cover normally standing over said orifice, a valve in said conduit, and means for removing the cover from the orifice and for bringing, it again over the orifice as the valve is openedand closed, respectively.
2. In drinking fountain, the combination with a jet orifice member. projecting inwardly and inclined upwardly, a pivoted orifice, a bowl, a passage leading to the jet,
said passage being curved to conform to the outer surface of said bowl, a valve in said passage, means for manually operating the valve, and connections between said cover and said means whereby the opening of the valve may raise the cover and the closing of the valve may close the cover over the orifice, the cover presenting a substantially flat disk having a convex upper surface.
3. In a drinking fountain, the combination with a bowl havinga waste passage leading therefrom, a rock shaft pivotally carried by bearings in the side of the bowl, a cover member carried by the rock shaft. a jet orifice member beneath the cover, a passage outside of said bowl leading to the jet orifice, avalve in said passage, and a link connection outside of said bowl between said valve and said rock shaft whereby the cover is raised and lowered as the valve is opened and closed respectively.

In a drinking fountain, the combination of a bowl having a waste passage leading therefrom. an angular jet discharge orilice at one side and in the interior of the bowl, a fresh water passage leading thereto, a puppet valve in said passage, an operating member for said valve adapted to open the valve by a partial revolution, a cover adapted to stand over said orifice, a rock shaft carrying said cover and having a rock arm, and :1 link connecting the rock arm and said valve handle.
5. In a. drinking fountain, the combination with a bowl having a central discharge pipe therein of an inclined jet orifice positioned on the interior of said bowl and near the top thereof, a valve connected with said orifice, a disk like cover adapted to seal the orifice, a rock shaft carrying said cover and carried by bearings comprising a part of said bowl, said rock shaft extending outside of said bowl and carrying a rock arm there on, and means for connecting said rock arm .to said valve whereby movement of the valve causes a movement of said cover.
6. In a drinking fountain. the combination with a bowl of a central discharge pipe and a lateral intake pipe, said intake pipe having an inwardly inclined orifice and positioned near the top of said bowl, a cover adapted to seal the orifice, a rock shaft extending on both sides of the bowl and carry ing the cover, a puppet valve on said intake pipe, said valve comprising a valve stem towhich is rigidly secured a roller adapted to move on a cam surface, a handle rigidly secured to said valve stem, whereby rotation of the handle causes the stem to move longitudinally of its axis, and means connecting said valve to said rock shaft.
7. In a drinking fountain. the combina tion with a bowl of a central discharge pipe, an intake pipe having a, portion thereof conforming to the outer contour of said bowl, a jet orifice rigidly secured to said intake pipe and inclined toward the center of said bowl whereby a stream of water issuing from the orifice passes from one edge of the bowl toward the other, a cover adapt ed to seal the orifice, a rock shaft carrying said cover, a puppet valve having a valve .llltl ltlS stem adapted to be moved longitudinally of jection, and a link connecting said projection its axis and carrying an inclined cam surto said rock shaft whereby rotation of the face, a roller secured to said stem, a handle handle causes a movement of said cover. 1 rigidly secured to said stein whereby rota- In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my tion of the handle causes the stem to move signature.
