To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN D. ELLIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, Tennessee, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enabl other skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention is a garment fastener designed more particularly for use in connection with the securing of portions of waterproof coats, leggings and the like, although adapted for other use.

A purpose of the invention is to provide a fastener which saves the expense of forming buttonholes; which may be easily operated; which is simple in construction and durable; which can be readily manufac tured at a saving of expense in the manufacture, and which saves labor in its application to fabrics.

The fastener comprises a hook member and an eye member, each formed from a single piece of metal, or other suitable material, the eye member being provided with a retaining loop, while the hook member is provided with a hook bent from the base to engage the loop, and with a tongue to retain the hook in engagement with the loop, the tongue being so formed that it will per mit of the easy insertion of the loop section between the tongue and hook, and its ready removal from engagement with the hook member, the tongue serving also to prevent the separation of the hook and eye members except when the hook is guided between the tongue and loop.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed.

The garment fastener is shown compris-v ing two members, a hook member A and an eye member B. Each of the members is formed from a single piece of material, such as metal, to provide a base 1 which is shown substantially oval in form. Near the central portion of the base of each member, there may be provided a protuberance 2 which may serve as means to press the thumb or finger against when looking or unlocking Near the outer ends of the oval base plate, there may be provided suitable means for securing the base plate to the garment or fabric to which it is attacl'ied. In the drawings, the securing means are shown as brads passing through the apertures 3 of the plate 1. These brads are preferably positioned at or about the center of each end of the oval base and substantially equi-distant from, yet adjacent to, the tongue 4; of the hook plate member A.

The tongue 4L is cut or formed from the piece of material in such a manner that the base of the tongue is integral with the oval base member 1. The tongue portion is then bent upwardly from the base 1 at an angle of substantially forty-five degrees for about three-fourths of the length of the tongue, and thereafter the tongue is curved or bent slightly downward as at 5 to deflect the end of the tongue for the purpose of permitting the eye member to be more easily fastened and unfastened.

The hook portion ('3 of the hook member may be semi-oval in form, as indicated in Fig. 2, and is preferably so bent from the oval base 1 that the free end of the hook, positioned. over the end 5 of the tongue and preferably to a point slightly in the rear of the forward bend of the tongue where the tongue is deflected downwardly as at 5. The point 7 of the hook 6 is deflected slightly upwardly to serve as a guide to direct the bar 8 of the eye member between the point 7 of the hook and the end 5 of the tongue. The tongue and hook are so formed on the hook member that they provide a space indicated at 9 between them and the body of the oval base 1, into which may be positioned the bar 8 of the eye member, for comparatively free movement of the bar in such space.

The eye member B is provided with an oval base 1, the knob or protuberance 2 and the fastening means 3 are substantially the same as the hook member. The member B however, is provided with an extension which may be substantially rectangular in form, as indicated at 10, and this extension may have a cut-out portion 11 to form an eye, leaving the rest of material adjacent thereto in the form of a loop to be engaged by the hook or member A. The bar 8 forms one side of theloop, and serves as the cooperating retaining means for the hook G. The extension 10 of the eye member B is deflected slightly downwardly at 12 from the plane of the oval base 1, and at the edge of the base, the deflected portion being preferably positioned at the edge of the material or fabric to which the fastening member B is applied, in order to protect the cloth at that portion. The extension is thence bent again through the side members l3'ot the loop to bring the bar 8 of the extension on a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the oval base. In this manner, the eye member B may have its bar 8 so positioned in the space 9 that the bar is not liable to be moved upon the tongue 5 and hook 6 unless manually directed to such position.

It is obvious that various changes in the form and proportion of parts may be made from those herein described and illustrated, and the right is reserved to make such changes to adapt the invention to various uses, as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A garment fastener comprising complemental hook and eye members provided with bases, having a protuberance substantially centrally oi the base and with fabric securing means near the ends of: the base, the eve member having a loop bent out o l the plane of its base and terminating in a hook engaging seetion which is on a. plane substantially pa allel to; the base, the hook member having a tongue which cooperates with a hook of the base to prevent the disengagw ment of the hook ei'igaging section o t the loop member from the hook.
