To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. BAZELEY,\.\ a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for the Manufacture of Cast- Steel Chain, ofwhich the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of a mold box for the makin of molds for carrying out' my invention; ig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof; Fi 3 is a section on lines III-J11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the manner of removal of the loose pattern pieces; Fig. 5 is a section similar to Fig. 4 but with the box lifted from the mold; Fig. 6 is a perspective of a completed quarter mold; Fig. 7 is an elevation of a series of quarter molds with preformed links in place; and Fig. 8 is a'top plan of a series of completed molds ready for Ipouring.
it y invention relates to the making of cast steel chain links in the form of a continuous chain, and consists in apparatus for making sand molds for casting chain therein without the use of inserted cores or mold parts. My invention also consists in the various steps and in the arrangement and construction of parts which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the drawings, in which I have shown apparatus suitable for carrying out my invention, the molds are formed in the mold box 2, which has a bottom or board 3 and which may be integral therewith. Secured to the bottom 3 is the pattern 4 which corresponds to the form of one-half of a link A divided longitudinally. Loosely mounted also on the board 3 and in ends of box respectively, in a plane-at right angles to the plane of the pattern '4, are the pattern pieces 5 and 6, each pair of which comprises a quarter link pattern B. Each piece 6 also comprises the form of one-fourth of the stud or intermediate connecting portion of the link pattern B. Also attached to the board 3 are the pieces 7, each of which forms an impression for one-fourth of the gate 7' through which a complete link impression B is poured.

other end ofthe box is correspondingly shaped to provide a recess 10 in the mold -part complementary to a projection 9 on an adjacent mold part. The loose member 8 has on its outer face sufficient taper or draft to permit the easy removal of the box from about the mold, after it has been inverted.
Each loose piece 5, to provide for its being accurately positioned in the box, has a pivot bearing 11 on the bottom of the boxyabout whlch 1t swings in being inserted or in being removed through an aperture 12 in the bottom of the box. Each loose piece 6 is also inserted and removed through an aperture 13 (which on one end also extends through the member 8) in the side of the box. The aperture 13 serves as a guide for the piece 6, which has a handle 14 by which it may be removed. When the pieces 5 and 6 have been inserted into the box, they are held in such position by the clamps 15 and 16 re spectively.
In forming a quartermold in the mold box, the parts are placed in the positions, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and sand is rammed in and about the pattern pieces 4, 5 and 6. The box is then inverted, the clamps 15 and 16 are loosened and the pieces 5 and 6 are withdrawn through the bottom and sides of the box respectively and the box then taken off the molded sand, thereby. removing the pieces 4 and 7 which are attached to bottom 3. The member 8 is then taken off thus completing the operation of forming a quarter mold, which may be baked if desired.
A correspondingly shaped quarter-mold may then be formed, which when arranged side by side with the quarter mold just de scribed with the impressions 4' in registr completes the form of one halfof a mol A pair of similarly formed quarter molds are then placed with their meeting faces on the vertical line of division between the pair of quarter molds first mentioned, thus forming a complete connecting-link impression B When it is desired to form a section of chain links, a series of quarter-molds are arranged end to end, as is shown in Fig. 7 and preformed links A are placed in the impressions 4'. A series of complementary quarter molds are next placed with their impressions 4 facing the impressions 4 on the first mentioned series of quarter molds. The sets of quarter molds are carefully brought, in alinement, the meeting edges about the gates 7 are luted' with a sil1c 1ous material, and the connecting link or llnks are then poured in the impressions B. The molds are then broken up, and a connected section of chain is found to have been formed. It is obvious that as many links as are desired may be connected together by the method and molds which I have described.
If desired, the whole chain may be cast at one time by pouring the impressions 4:
as is shown at the right in Fig. 8 throu h the gates 7 thereby forming the links as well as the connecting links in the im pressions B in the same casting operation.
The terms and expressions which I have employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation, and I have no intention in the use of such terms and expres sions, of excluding equivalents for the features described and shown, but recognize that the various modifications are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.
What I claim is:
l. A box for forming cast chain link molds comprising sides and a bottom; a pattern piece to form apart impression for a central link secured to said bottom, and pattern pieces to form part impressions for adjacent links and removable through guideways in the sides and bottom of said box.
2. A box for forming molds for east chain links comprising sides and a bottom, a pattern piece to form a part impression for a central link, and pattern pieces to form part impressions for adjacent links, said last named pattern pieces meeting at the point at which the radius of curvature of the link changes and each being removable through guides in the box along its own line of curvature.
3. A mold box for forming molds for east chain links having pattern parts for one link attached to the box, sets of pattern parts for other links arranged in a plane at right angles to the first mentioned parts, each set of the second mentioned parts being capable of removal through the sides of the box to permit the separation of the box from the mold.
4. A mold box for forming molds for east chain links containing part patterns for three links, the part pattern for one link being arranged in a plane at right angles to the plane of the part patterns for the other two links, the last mentioned part patterns being removable through the sides of the box, a loose piece at one end of the box forming the end of the mold and disengageable therefrom after removal of the box from the mold.
5. In a mold box for forming molds for east chain links, part patterns for three links, the part pattern for one link being a rranged in a plane at right angles to the plane of the patterns for the other two links, pieces of the patterns being pivoted to the box to permit removal therefrom after the forming of the mold.
6. In a mold box for forming a mold for east chain links, part patterns for three links, the part pattern for one link being fixed to the box, the part patterns for the other links being removable through the sides of the box after the forming of the mold.
