Be it known that ll, Jncon Knrinns. a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Display Apparatus, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to advertising devices of that type in which a succession of panels are revolvedand are exhibited on each side, successively, the panels being operated. by a rotating device and being con trolled by an escapenient which lets off the panels one by one so that they may swing into position for exposing first one side and then the other side thereof at the front of the machine.
The object of the invention is to form an improved device of thistype, characterized especially by novelty with respect to the manner of supporting the panels and the escapeinent for controlling the exhibition thereof.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a face view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section, the signs being removed from the frames of the panels. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3*3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are details in section of the hinges by which the panels are attached to the rotating frame. Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are details'in perspective of some of the hinge members. Fig. 9 is a vertical section of one of the panels. Fig. 10 is a detail in perspective of one of the signs or boards showing the means for attachment to the panel frame.
Referring specifically to the drawings 6 indicates a casing which incloses the working parts of the device, and has an opening 7 at the front through which the signs 8 on the panels are shown. The upper and lower edges of the opening are notched as indicated at 9 for a purpose to be described.
Within the casing is a stand 10 on which is mounted a motor 11 driving a worm 12 which meshes with a gear 13 on a shaft 14 having a worm 15 driving a gear 16 on a vertical sl1a-ft:17 whichflhas a pinion 18 which meshes with an internal ring gear 19 fixed to a base plate or disk 20 which is fastened to a vertical shaft 21 mounted in a hearing at 22 at the top of the stand and in a step bearing 23 at the bottom.

or plate 24 fixed thereto, and the panels are hinged to the plates 20 and 24.
Each panel consists of a frame 25 on which the display boards or signs 26 may be hung by means of lugs 27 which may be entered chroughnotches 28 in the frame and hooked behind the side members of the frame.
Various other trains of gearing from the motor, and other means of mounting the signs on the panel frames may be used if desired.
Each panel is hingedto the plates 20 and 24 by double jointed spring hinges. Each is coiled around the sleeve 31 and abuts at one end against a pin 36 on the panel and at the other end against the lower end of the pin 33, as indicated at 37, the tendency of the spring being to swing the panel around against the preceding panel. A spring 38 is coiled around the pin 32, and one end of the spring stops against a preceding pin, as indicated in Fig. 3; and the other end stops against the pin 34, as indicated at 40, the tendency of this spring being to swing the hinge member 30 on the pivot pin 33 so as to cause the panels to follow each other. The lower inner corner of the frame is recessed as indicated at 41 to accommodate some of the parts referred to.
At the top, the members 30, 31, 32, 33, 35 and 38 are duplicated, the pin 33 being fitted in the upper head 24 so as to turn therein, the function of the parts in both cases being the same.
Each panel is provided on its upper and lower edges with pegs 50 which are adapted in the movement of the panels to escape through the notches 9 when registered therewith, permitting the panel to swing over to the opposite side and the pegsto enter the corresponding notches on that side.
In the operation of the device the shaft 21 is rotated by the motor and gearing described, and the panels are carried around until the pegs 5O stop against the casing 6, as shown at the right in Fig. 3. One side of the panel is thus exhibited through the opening 7. Continued rotation of the shaft causes the springs to yield and the hinges to flex, and the foremost panel drags to the left in Fig. 2 until the pegs 5O reach the notches 9, at which time the springs come into play and swing the panel around to the opposite side, exhibiting the reverse side of the panel, and finally the pegs 50 enter the notches 9 at the left in Fig. 2 and the panel passes into the interior of the casing and is carried around in turn. This operation is repeated for each panel in succession.
I claim:
1. A display device comprising a casing having an opening at the front provided with notches, a rotary structure in the casing, panels having pegs adapted to pass through said notches, and spring hinges connecting said structure and the panels and adapted to be placed under tension by the rotation of the structure and swing the panels when the pegs thereon register with the notches.
2. A display device comprising a casing having an opening at the front provided with notches, a rotary structure in the easing, panels having pegs adapted to pass through said notches, and spring hinges connecting said structure and the panels and adapted to be placed under tension by the rotation of the structure and swing the panels when the pegs thereon register with the notches, each of said hinges having two pivotal joints permitting lateral movement of the panels with respect to the front of the casing.

In a display apparatus, the combination of a rotating structure, a hinge member pivoted thereto, a panel pivoted to the hinge member, springs tending to swing said member and panel on their pivots, means actuated by rotation of the structure to place the springs under tension, and escapement means controlling the swing of the panel under the influence of the springs.
42. In a display apparatus the combination with upper and lower rotary disks, and means to rotate the same, of a plurality of panels hinged at their inner corners to said disks respectively, springstending to swing the panels on said hinges, and escapement mechanism controlling the swing of said panels, said hinges having a plurality of pivotal joints permitting lateral as well as revolving movement of the panels.
5. In a display apparatus the combination of a casing having a display opening at the front and a notch at the edge of said opening, a rotary structure in the casing, a succession of panels carried by said structure, spring hinges connecting the panels and the structure, and pegs projecting from the panels and adapted by the rotation of the structure to be registered with the notch to permit the escape and swing of the panels.
