To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HERBERT BIQHAN and WILLIS S. ALBRINK, citizens of the United States, and residents of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of ()hio, have invented certain new and useful Paving- Blocks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates particularly to paving blocks of wood or other material which is subject to contraction and expansion under changing temperature or moisture conditions.
The primary object of our invention is the provision on blocks, of the character described, of simpleand efficient means for of fectinp a suitable spacing of the blocks when laid to form a floor or pavement, and which will at the same time compress under pressure, thereby preventing a buckling of the floor or pavement when expansion occurs, and will expand to normal size, or substantially so, when the compressing pressure is relieved. Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description thereof.
While the invention in its broader aspect is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a pavement employing blocks embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the blocks, and Fig. 3 is a section thereof on the line 8-3 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the paving blocks embodying the invention are desig nated 1, and each is provided, in the present instance, on one vertical side and an end thereof with projecting members 2 which, when a plurality of blocks are placed side by side and end to end, form a spa ing for the blocks so as to permit tar or other suitable filler to be placed in the cracks or spaces between the blocks.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the spacing members 2 are of lug form, a pair being provided in vertically spaced relation at each end portion of a side of the block and a similar pair being provided on an end of the block, thus enabling the filler between the blocks to fill in around and between the spacing members and thereby more effectually bind the blocks together and against a raising action than is possible in spacing members of the vertical rib type commonly employed. It is also found in practice that this arrangement of the spacing members or lugs prevents water or mois ture from working down between the blocks and underneath the same and resulting in a raising of the blocks by reason of the presence of water thereunder. It is also found in ractice that the presence of floaters in a pavement being laid, are very largely eliminated.
