To all whom it may concern I e it known that we, ETHAN I. Donns and FREDERICK K. LANDGRAF, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in staybolt Structures for Boilers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers. One object of the invention. is to provide a structure in which the bearing sleeve or bushing for the rounded head of a staybolt shall have such a universal mounting in the boiler shell and be capable at all times of movement to insure and maintain proper alinement of the staybolt relatively to its connection with the boiler sheets, and to protect against the effects of leakage with the use of a cap or closure secured to the boiler sheet.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional view showing an embodiment of our invention.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet, and 2 an inner boiler shell.
The outer boiler sheet is made with openings for the accommodation of the mounting of staybolts. The wall of each of these openings is curved transversely in such manner that the opening in the boiler sheet shall be larger at one end than at the other,said transversely curved wall constituting a partly spherical seat 3 for a partly spherical or spheroidal sleeve 4. The opening through this sleeve is larger at one end than at the other and is so formed as to provide a curved or partly spherical seat 5 within the inner end portion of the sleeve to provide a bearing for the rounded head 6 of a staybolt 7. The opposite or inner end of the staybolt will be secured to the inner boiler sheet, for which purpose it may be threaded to pass through a hole in the inner boiler sheet and then upset.

its way past the bearing of the sleeve in the boiler sheet or the bearing of the bolt head within the sleeve, we provide a cap 8 which encircles the opening in the boiler sheet and covers the open outer end of the sleeve and also the bolt head, without contact with either. This cap is preferably made with a beveled edge 9 and engages the outer face of the boiler sheet. The cap is secured to the boiler sheet by welding. In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, a weld 10 is formed around the cap, with the use of a suitable welding alloy which may be built up by an electric or other suitable welding method around the cap and on the boiler sheet as well as in the recess formed by the beveling of the edge of the cap.
Various changes might be made in the de tails of construction of our invention without departing from the spirit thereof or lnniting its scope, and hence we do not wish to restrict ourselves to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing member loosely mounted in said opening and freely movable against the wall thereof, said bearing member having an interior seat for the head of a staybolt, a staybolt having a head mounted on the seat in the bearing member, and a closure secured to the boiler sheet around the opening therein and inclosing the freely movable bearing member and bolt head.
2. The combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a sleeve having a universally movable mounting in said opening and having an internal bearing for the head of a staybolt, a staybolt having a head mounted in said sleeve, and a cap surrounding said opening and secured to the boiler sheet.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combina tion with a boiler sheet having an opening therein, the wall of said opening being partly spherical, of a partly spherical sleeve seated on the partly spherical bearing formed by the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, said sleeve having an internal bearing for a bolt head, a staybolt having a head mounted on said internal bearing, r..
cap constituting a closure for said sleeve and bolt head, and a Weld securing said cap to the boiler sheet around the opening therein.
4. The combination With a boiler sheet having an opening, a staybolt having a head, and a, bearing member for said head having universally adjustable mounting in the opening in the boiler sheet, of a cap surrounding the opening in the boiler sheet and havlng a beveled edge, and a Weld securing the beveled edge of the cap to the boiler sheet.
