tachment for rifles and 1 the principal object ofthe invention is to provi'de means whereby. a .plurality of bombs may be shot from the rifle in trapid succession.
Another objectof the invention is .to pro- "vide meansfor feeding the bombs into firing epositi'on .byithe movement of thebreech bolt.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the; several parts, ito' behereinalfter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings-and specifically "pointed out in "the appended claims.
Indescribing my-invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a rifle supplied with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the forward end of the device.
Fig. 3 is a like view with loading means in contracted position and with a bomb in firing position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the carrier.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the reel.
In these views 1 indicates the gun or rifle which may be of any desired type and which is adapted to be supported in firing position by the tripod 2. In carrying out my invention I locate a sleeve 3 on the barrel of the gun and this sleeve is slidably connected with the barrel by means of the slot 4 and the pin 5. I also place a guiding member 6 on the end of the barrel and this member is held on the barrel in any desired manner. As'shown, it is held to the barrel by the sight 7 of the gun engaging a bayonet slot in the member. The outer end of this member overlaps the. end of the barrel and the under part ofthis overlapping portion is provided with a recess 8 for guiding the stems of the bombsto the bore of the barrel. A spring 9 is placed on the barrel and has one end abutting the sleeve 3 and its other endabutting-the guide 10 which is placed on the barrel. This-spring tends to hold the sleeve-against the inner end of the guiding member 6.
The bomb carrier 11 consists of the'looplike frame l2 which is formed withthe parallel verticalportions 13', provided with the eyes 14 midway their ends which are engaged by the :pivot pins '15 on the sleeve 3. In thisway the carrier is pivotally supported by the sleeve. A-semi-circular arm '1'6has its'endsconnected with the ends of the frame 12'and this arm carries a plurality of guiding sleeves 17. the frame '12-'also have connected therewith The ends of the arms 18 and these arms support the semi-circular frame 19. This frame is-pro- 'vided'with a plurality of cone-shaped sockets 20 for receiving the bombs 21. These bombs are providedwith thestems 22-which y extend through the holes 23 at the inner ends ofthe sockets and through the guide sleeves'li.
A reel '24-is mounted in a case 25 carried by the frame 19 and this reel is provided with a winding spring 26 and ratchet mechanism 27. A cable 28 has one end connected with this reel and this cable passes over the pulley 29 through the guide 10 and has its other end connected to the breech bolt 30 as at 31. A cable has one end connected to the other rear end of the breech bolt and this cable passes through a guide 33, located adjacent the end of the stock and then passes forwardly through a guide 34L and has its other end connected with the sleeve 3. The spring reel is arranged to take up the slack in cable 28 caused by forward movement of the breech bolt and the ratchet mechanism will prevent this slack from being unwound from the reel when the bolt moves rearwardly. In this way the cable is shortened every time the breech bolt is operated and thus the bomb carrier is swung upwardly on its pivots.
In the operation of the device the cable is unwound from the reel, by manipulating the ratchet so that the bomb carrier is in its lowest position. Then the breech bolt is opened to load the gun and in this opening movement the cable 28 is caused to raise the bomb carrier to bring the first bomb into the recess 8 of the guiding member. As before stated, this recess will guide the stem of the bomb to a position in alinement with the end of the bore of the barrel;
Then when the breech is closed the cable 32 is caused to pull back the sleeve 3 against the tension of the spring and as the carrier is connected with said sleeve said carrier will move relative to the gun and thus the end of the stem of the bomb will be caused to enter the bore of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 3. The slack in cable 28, caused by this forward movement of the breech bolt, will be taken up by one spring reel. When the cartridge is fired the bomb will be thrown from the gun in the usual manner. The breech bolt is then manipulated to eject the old cartridge and place a new one in the firing chamber and this action will raise a\new bomb into firing position and so on unfil the bombs are all discharged. After each movement of the breech bolt the cable 32 is shortened so that the bomb carrier is raised step by step. 7
The bombs may be held in the carrier by any suitable means to prevent them from falling out of the carrier. Such means, however, must be easily broken so as to not interfere with the discharging of the bombs.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
WVhat I claim is 1. In combination with a gun, a bomb carrier for supporting a plurality of bombs, a sleeve slidably mounted on the barrel of the gun, means for pivotally connecting the carrier to said sleeve and means connecting the firing mechanism of the gun with said sleeve and carrier for successively bringing the bombs to the muzzle of the gun.
2. In combination with a gun, a bomb carrier, a sleeve slidably mounted on the gun, means for pivotally connecting said carrier to the sleeve, a guiding member on the end of vthe barrel having a recess therein for guiding the bombs to the bore and cables comiecting' the sleeve and carrier to the breech bolt for bringing the bombs into firing position by the movement of said bolt.
3. In combination with a gun, a sleeve slidably mounted thereon, a spring engaging said sleeve, a bomb carrier pivotally connected with said sleeve, a spring reel on said frame, ratchet mechanism for preventing the unwinding of said reel, a cable having one end connected with said reel and its other end connected with the breech bolt, a second cable connecting the breech bolt with the sleeve and guiding means connected with the gun for guiding the bombs into firing position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
