SCHWARZ, a.
. and useful Improvements in Folding Toothbrushes, of which th. following is a specification.
My said inventionronsists in certain im provemcnts' 1n the details of construction.
- and arrangementv of parts oi' foldingtoo'th "parts subsgantially the same brushes, whereby a@ brush of this type ,is provided whereinjall "the parts except the bristles are capable-of indefinite. "use, and wherein new sets ofbristles may be readily and cheaply substituted for old ,sets, and whereby a tooth brush is provided which is sanitary in its construction and Convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter morefully described. i
Referring which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate si nilar Figure l is a plan View looking at the tooth brush toward the top of the bristles and when the brush is open "and ready for use, Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view 1001s ing in the direction indicated by the arrows from the dotted 1ine"2-2 in Fig. 1, Fig. 3'aplan'view' of the brush folded,
4 a erspeotive View of the handle portion of t e brush se arately.
Fig. 5 a plan View 0 the blank as formed;
ready to make the handle, and
' Fig. 6 a plan View of the blank formed ready to make the bristle holders.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the handle and B and C a brush holder formed in two parts each of which has a shank portion.
The handle A is cut the form shown in Fig. '5 and then formed by bending, bydies or in any manner preferred, along the points indicated by dotted lines in said figure to make a handle, of the form shown in Fig. 4. The raised central portion 10 at the outer end. is formed by bending over the rear part of the stamped blank and turning down the edges thereof,
as indicated. by the dotted lines in Fig. lheback of said handie is cut from a point 11 along lines near each side to a point 12, forming a spring back adapted to operate in manner as the bash".

out of sheet metal to the frame is solid withthe sides thereof, making a rigid construction at the front as. well as at the rear. .Near the front end in the sides are formed holes 30 in which the pivots of the ,brushholder B -C are mounted. Said brush holder B-C is connected by a pin 15 in the some manner as thetwo parts of apair of shears, the pin bein fixed in one partand having an elongated head that is adapted to pass through a correspondingly shaped opening in the other part, but at right angles thereto when in normal post tion, as shown. Each of the forward ends of said parts are formed with sides 16, with overturned top edges 31, ends 17 and in at the rear ends forming l the bases 19 holding the Sa1d'bases 19 with the bristles therein are formed of rubberor other suitable material and adapted to fitinto the metal cases thus formed, beingslid into position from the inner sides and held. in position b close contact, with each othcr when the rushes are in position for use. Backof the pin 15 the brush holder is formed with shank portion and an upturned fian e 20 in which isrigi'dly ly projecting pivot 21 bent up ata slight angle frointhe outer edge toward the inner edge, as on dotted line 23, Fig. 6, for a purposeto be presently described.
The parts and 'C are also of nietal itnd the edges turned parts intothe proper staliiped out to lto'rnrthe shape, as indicated by In the construction the parts are sopro- Y portioned and adjustedthat when the brush is opened for use the inner edges of the parts of holder B-C will first contact and as they are brought to full opened position they will bear closely against each other, slightly springing at said endsso that their adjacent edges will bear closely and ,form a brush which as a whole will be for all practical purposes unitary in its structure.
In operation the brush being open, 'as shown in 1, and it being desired to close. the sanie'the parts B and C are turned upwardly on the pivots 551. Asthej1 are turned upwardly the spring back of the handle yields under the pressure and when the parts or adjacent f handle the ends 22 vent-ion, what I with side flanges,
come to e positionnt right angles with the cause said spring back to hold skid, brush holder parts inclined apart. so that the brush-bases which are held in holder Br-C by friction may. be removed and onefof said bases placed edgewise in the opening in raisedportion' 10 and the other similarly on spr-ing back 25. Continuing the t'urning'ofparts B and C the sides of the handlii i'eceive the parts spreading them sothateacliwili fit on the appropriate side of the-centralrsiised portion 10 of the handle and the ends 22Will snap into position, the fianges' fgfl into 0 enings'33 between the edges and the'end of t .e spring back 25, thus lock-- in'gthe'parts closely in position and holding the device closed. In opening the device the reverseb eration isproceeded with, the inturned en s 26 at the front end of the handle serving as cams to guide the parts B and C and close them tightly together, as before described.
By this means a. very convenient strnctnre isprovided for the purpose and one in which the brush parts can be readily interchanged, as desired, the hendieend p a-rts B and 0 being formed of eny attrectrve design or material, as Will be readily understood.
Having thus full described my said inceim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A deviceof the class described comprising a handle formed with. raised portions, a spring back on said handle, a folding brush holder comprising two relatively movable parts, said raised portions being adapted to receive seidv brush holder, brns ies carried by said holder, said holder being mounted on pivotsin said handle the endsof the same beerin against said spring back and adapted to e retained in position thereby.
2. device of the kind described, corn- -prisin a; lnm'dle formed with a. buck and ;With side flanges, the ford/and. ends or" said flanges being offset-inwardly, andthe boil: being provided at the forward end with. a
