To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE KiiAKowsiiY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at South Bend, in the county of Saint Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of a locomotive capable of attaining great speed from a minimum expenditure of fuel, the construction being simple and possessing great strength and endurance.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a high speed locomotive pos sessing great power after the nature of a double action compound engine, enlarged divers being employed whereby the draft is equalized throughout the entire body of the locomotive.
A. still further object of the invention is the provision of a locomotive having forward and rear drivers simultaneously operable by steam power derived from a double boiler having a single steam chamber and steam dome communicating with the steam chests of the driving cylinders.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a locomotive having acentral stabilizing` truck assisting in maintaining the equillibrium of the locomotive in travel upon the track.
1t is also designed to provide with a locomotive a tender having its truck connected for resiliently supporting the rear end of the locomotive cab for absorbing vibrations and jars incident to travel.
l also provide means upon myl high speed locomotive for slidably maintaining the same upon. the track rails in case of the accidental derailment of the main drivers and whereby the locomotive will be maintained upright in a sliding position upon the track. My double boiler construction is of the firetube type having dual fire boxes within the locomotive cab it being understood that either solid oi' fluid fuel maybe employed according to the equipment of the railroad line.
`With these general objects in view the invention consists of the novel combination' and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

Referring more in detail to the drawings my invention broadly consists of a steam generator comprising upper and lower boilers 1() and 11 arranged parallel one above the other with superposed tire boxes 10 and 11 respectively at the rear of the boilers and an outlet 'chamber 12 for the products of combustion at the forward end of the boilers having a smoke stack 13 at the top of the chamber. Similar side frames are secured opposite the side of the boilers 10 and 11 comprising central plates 14 with rear extensions 15 out away longitudinally as at 16 and also having forward extensions 17 with similar longitudinal cutaway portions 18.
The extensions 15 terminate in downward .inclined portions 19 at the opposite sides of the cab 20 at the rear of the boilers 10 and 11 with the fire box doors 21 and 22 positioned within the cab.
The forward extensions 17 terminate as at 21 adjacent the forward end of the boiler connecting chamber 12 at the front ofthe locomotive.
The main driving cylinders 23 are oppo-v sitely positioned substantially centrally of the locomotive outwardly of the main frame plates14 and are operatively connected to steam chests 24 in the usual manner, the steam chests 24 beingsecured to the plates14 beneath the cylinders 23. The boilers 10 and 11 being of the lire-tube type, the lower boiler 14 is provided with tubes 25 and the lower portion` of the upper' boilers 10 with similar tubes 26 opening at their rear ends in the iire boxes 11 and:10 respectively for conveying the heated gases andgproducts of combustion through the said pipes tothe chamber l'12 'into which Vthe open forward ends of the tubes 25 and 26 are exhausted. lThe'tubesl26 of the upper boilers 10 are provided'rin the lower portionthereof leaving 7 a steam spacel 27 in the upper side of thetop boiler 10 communicating with a steam dome 28 positioned .substantially centrally upon thetop oftheboiler 10.

Main boxings 33 for the rear drive shaft`32 are connected by equalizing springs 84 and- 35 with the rear frame extensions 15, the springs-lying within the cutaway portions 16 of'such extensions with their inner ends linked to saddlemembers 36 uponthe boxes3'3.
The rear ends ofthe rear springs 84 are connected by links 37 with'the lower sides of the rear extensions 16 while the front end of 'the forward springs 85 are connected by li'nks138 'with't'he upper'sides of the rear extensions 416. A fuel carrier or tender 70 is coupled rearwardly of the eab'2'0 mounted upon its lll() own truck 71. Means are provided for equalizing shocks and supporting a part of the weight of the cab Q0 from the tender truck 71 and consists of an angular bar 72 coupled by a pin 7 3 with the bracket 74 of the shoe 67 beneath the cab 20. The bar 72 has its rear end anti-frictionally journaled by means of spaced balls 74 centrally of the truck 7l while the -bar 72 extends through a bracket 75 depending from the rear end of the cab 20. rlllhe ball 7 6 in the bottom of the bracket 75 has the bar 72 mounted thereon while a ball 77 upon the top of the bar 7 2 has a spring 7 8 interposed between the same and an adjusting wedge 7 9 extending through the top of the bracket. The vertical vibrations of the cab 20 are absorbed by the springs 7 8 which is adjustable in tension by means of the wedge 7 9.
The complete operation of the invention will be fully understood from this detailed description thereof, the increased steam capacity of the two lire-tube boilers being apparent as well as the capacity for power possessed by the opposite double-acting main cylinders 23. The drive wheels 29 and 30 are preferably of greater diameter than the height of the boilers or cab 2O being capable of revolving by the great power of the steam plant. The locomotive is thoroughly equilibrated for maintaining the same upright on the track at great speeds of travel, the locomotive being capable of pulling great loads as well as traveling at unusually high speeds. lt will be noted that while the main cylinders 23 are carried outwardly of the side plates 14.- of the main frame, the guides 4l?) for the cross heads 40 and il are outwardly of the driving wheels 29 and 30. The locomotive possesses great safety being prevented from leaving the track by the stabilizing central truck 59 and provided with the safety sliding means consisting of the shoes 65, 66 and 67 in the event of an accidental derailment of the locomotive. The winddeflector 64:l forwardly of the locomotive decreases the air resistance during forward travel while the equalizing suspension springs 34, 35, 234i and 35 mount the boilers and their mechanism in a cushioning manner upon the main shafts 3l and 32.
,While the form of the invention herein set forth is believed preferable it will be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l, A locomotive comprising a horizontal boiler, forward and rear drive wheels upon which the boiler is mounted, a main frame carried by the boilers, a central truck beneath the frame and central boiler and socket connections between the truck and frame.
2. In combination with a locomotive and a tender truck, a bracket carried by the locomotive, a bar coupled beneath the locomotive and projecting rearwardly centrally beneath the truck, anti-friction connections between the truck and the rear end of the bar, a depending bracket upon the locomotive through which the bar extends, a shock-absorbing spring engaging said bar within the bracket and tension changing means for the spring carried by the bracket.

A locomotive comprising parallel boilers, a main frame having side portions secured to the opposite sides of the boilers, with cutaway portions corresponding to the space between the boilers, main shafts journaled through the cutway portions of the frame, forward and rear driving wheels upon said shafts outwardly of the frame, spring equalizing suspension means between said shafts and the cutaway portions of the frame, driving means for the wheels carried by the frame outwardly of said wheels, a steam dome centrally of the upper boiler, steam pipes connected between said dome and driving means at opposite sides of the locomotive.

A locomotive comprising spaced superposed boilers, superposed fire boXes for the boilers rearwardly thereof, a cab at the rear of the fire boxes, main frame members at opposite sides of the boilers secured to the cab with cutaway portions corresponding to the space between the boilers, a main steam cylinder and steam chest carried by the frame at opposite sides of the boiler, steam connections between the upper boiler and said chests, forward and rear pairs of drivers adapted for supporting the boilers and operating means between the main cylinders and said drivers.

A locomotive comprising spaced superposed boilers, superposed fire boxes, for the boilers rearwardly thereof, a cab at the rear of the fire boxes, main frame members at opposite sides of the boilers secured to the cab with cutaway portions corresponding to the space between the boilers, a main steam cylinder and steam chest carried by the frame at opposite sides of the boiler, steam connections between the upper boiler and said chests, forward and rear pairs of drivers adapted for supporting the boilers, operating means between the main cylinders and said drivers, operative link connections between the steam chests and drivers, main shafts for the drivers transversely positioned between the boilers through the cutaway portions of the frames and equalizing spring mounting means between said shafts and the frames at the cutaway portions of the latter.
