LAMP-SUCKET CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed December 10, 1918.
To all whomit may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR S. Swanson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Socket Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to lamp socket construction; and it has for its general object to provide a construction in which the shell body and. the cap of the socket construction are so constructed, and relatively arranged that the shell body may be expeditiously and easily engaged with and disengaged from the cap, and in such manner that the two are positively connected together without liability of being casually disconnected.
Other advantageous features of the invention will be fully appreciated from the following detailed description and claims when the same are read in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereby made a parthereof, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating a lamp socket construction constituting one embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the cap comprised in said construction.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the shell body thereof.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the shell body. showing one of the comparatively wide diagonal channels therein.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a View showing the upper end of the shell body in plan and also showing an insulating switch body as properly positioned in the shell body.

Referring by numeral to the said drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 6 thereof, 1 is the shell body of the construction, which is formed of thin and resilient members or other material suitable to the purpose. As best shown in Fig. 6 the said shell body is lined with a layer of insulating material 2, and the said insulating materlal 2, as well as the insulating body 3, are pref- Specification of Letters Patent.

erab ly arranged as shown relative to the vertical slot 4 of the shell body so as not to interfere in any measure with the inward movement of the beveled end or corner 5 of the shell body at the upper end and one side of the said slot 4.
In addition to the slot 4 and the beveled portlon 5, the shell body is provided with four (more or less) diagonal ribs 6, and four (more or less) diagonal and comparatively wide channels 7, Figs. 4 and 6.
The cap 8 of the form shown is provided with four (more or less) diagonal sockets 9 to receive the ribs 6, and is also provided with four (more or less) inwardly extend mg, lateral teats 10. The wide channels 7 are arranged intermediate the ribs 6 in the shell body 1, and the teats 10 are arranged intermediate the sockets 9 in the cap 8. When one of the teats 10 of the cap 18 in posltion to engage the beveled portion 5 of the shell body, the diagonal sockets 9 will be in position to receive the diagonal ribs 6 of the shell body, and the other teats 10 of the cap will be in position to enter the diagonal and comparatively wide channels 7 of the shell body. The comparatively wide diagonal channels 7 are preferably employed and a plurality of teats 10 is likewise preferably employed, in order that the shell body 1 may 3e arranged in various positions about its axis relative to the cap 8 so that the slot 4: in the shell body may be located at any desired point for the convenient manipulation of the switch handle or lever that is designed tp extend through and be moved in the said s 0t 4t.
\Vith the understanding that any one of the teats 10 of the cap 8 may be arranged to cooperate with the beveled portion 5 of the shell body,it will be manifest that when the diagonal sockets 9 of the cap are matched with the diagonal'ribs 6 of the shell body, and the cap is crowded on the shell body or the shell body is crowned into the cap, the sockets 9 will receive the ribs 6, and coincident with such reception the teat 10 will ride over and put under tension the beveled portion 5 of the shell body, with the result that the teat 10 will snap into engagement with the side wall of the slot i at or about the point 13 in Fig. 3, and, consequently, the shell body and the cap will be securely locked together without liability of casual disconnection. When, however, it is desired to disconnect the shell body from the cap, the
same may be readily accomplished by pressing the Wall of the shell body inwardly in the vicinity of the point 13 and then separating the shell body and the cap so as to w ithdraw the ribs on the former from the sock ets of the latter. The diagonal ribs may be provided on one of the elements to be connected and the diagonal sockets in the other member in any approved manner, and I would also have it understood that the ribs 6 on one member may be made to extend inwardly from that member Without involving departure from the scope of my invention as defined by my appended claims.
The modified construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8 differs from the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 6 in two respects. One of these is that the ribs 6 and the comparatively wide channels 7 of the shell body 1 are reversely arranged as are also the diagonal sockets 9 of the cap 8*, and the other is that the teats 10 of the cap 8 are struck from the metal of the cap, as clearly appears in Fig. 8.
The modified construction operates in precisely the same manner as the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 6 and is possessed of all of the practical advantages ascribed to the said embodiment.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lamp socket construction, a shell body having a slot and a beveled portion at one side and adjacent to the open end of the slot and also having diagonal ribs, in combination with a cap having diagonal sockets positioned to receive said ribs and also having an inwardly extending teat adapted to ride over the beveled portion of the shell body and snap into engagement with one side wall of the slot in said body.
2. A lamp socket construction comprising a shell body having a slot and a beveled portion at one side and adj aoent to the open end of the slot and also having diagonal ribs and diagonal sockets intermediate of the ribs, and a cap having diagonal sockets to receive the ribs and also having inwardly directed teats intermediate of the said diagonal sockets, one
of said teats for cooperation with the firstnamed slot.
3. A lamp socket construction comprising a shell body and a cap; one of the said elements having diagonal ribs and the other having diagonal sockets to receive the ribs, and the shell body having a slot and a beveled portion at one side of and adjacent to the mouth of the slot, and the cap having an inwardly directed teat adapted to ride over the said beveled portion and snap into engagement with the adjacent side wall ol the slot.
4. A lamp socket construction comprising a shell body and a cap; one of the said elements having diagonal ribs and the other having diagonal sockets to receive the ribs, and the shell body having a slot that extends to the end thereof, and the cap having a lat eral projection adapted to ride over the adjacent portion of the shell body and snap into engagement with the adjacent wall ot the slot in said body.
5. A lamp socket construction comprising a shell body and a cap; one of the said elements having spaced diagonal ribs and diagonal channels intermediate ot the ribs, and the other element having diagonal sockets to receive said ribs, and one of the elements having a slot that extends to its end, and the other element having inwardly directed teats, one of said teats being adapted to ride into engagement with one wall of the slot in the cl; (1 member, and the said channels being positioned to receive the remaining teats.
