IMPROVEMENT IN RICE'CLEANING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,117, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. WHITE, of the city of New Orleans, parish` of Orleans and State of Louisiana,have invented an Improvement on a Rice Cleaning and Polishing Machine for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me-dated September 12, 1871, and numbered 118, 889, of which the followin g is a specification:
My improvement consists in a combination and arrangement of devices as hereinafter described and illustrated on the accompanying drawingm p Plate l being a vertical side view, and Plate 2 a vertical section and end view combined.
Similar letters 'of reference indicate corresponding parts of the device shown on both plates.
A is the huller, which, as before stated, having been patented, it is not necessary to fully describe in this speciiication. From the end of the said huller A the rice, together with the hulls which have been loosened therefrom, are delivered into the chute B, the grains of rice passing directly into the agitator or worker, shown at C, while the hulls, being lighter, are driven out through the mouth of the tube D by means of the operation of the rotary fan, shown at E, driving a current of air through the tube F, as clearly shown on Ilate 2. The said worker or agitator C is an upright cylindrical vessel, in which a vertical shaft, a, having radial or screw blades b secured thereto, revolves, by which means the cuticle which remains thereon and whichhas not been removed by the huller aforesaid is completely loosened or removed therefrom. From the said worker or agitator O the grains of rice fall through-the tube e into the receptacle d, whencethey are elevated by means of buckets o o, in the usual manner, in the direction indicated by the arrows e, so as to fall into the brusher G. The
said brusher G is likewise cylindrical, and provided with an interior vertically-revolving drum, upon the outer perimeter of which are secured, in any suitable manner, brushes composed of palm-leaf or any other equivalent fibrous material. The rice, when brought into contact with the revolving interior cylinder H and fibrous brushes therewith connected, will be entirely and completely divested of all the line particles of any of the cuticle which may not have been previously removed by the action of the worker or agitator aforesaid. From the said brusher G Athe rice falls into the receptacle df beneath the same, whence, by the elevator f, it is vtaken up in the direction indicated by the arrows g, and falls into the polisher I. The said polisher I is a vertical cylindrical vessel, the outer casing of which is composed of finely-woven Wire cloth, which permits a free exit of any dust which may adhere to the rice as the same is being subjected to the polishing process'effeeted within the said polisher I by means of the vertically-revolving interior polishing-CyL inder, shown at K; the surface of this interior rotating cylinder being provided with sheep-skin with the wool thereon, which, as I y have demonstrated by repeated experiments,
effects the operation of polishing the rice in a very thorough manner.
From the said polisher the rice is delivered ready for market or for consumption. The
pulley L of the huller A is driven by a belt.
from any motive power at hand, and upon the opposite end of the same shaft upon which the said pulley L is placed, is keyed the pulley M, from which, by means of a belt, motion isV communicated to the horizontal shaftt',which is provided with bevel-gear, as clearly shown, for the purpose of imparting rotary motion to the vertical shaft s within the worker, brusher, and polisher. Upon this shaft is likewise placed other pulleys for the purpose of workA ing the fan E and elevators, before mentioned.
