LICENSE PLATE HOLDER FOR AUTOMOBILES.
" APPLICATION FILED MAY 28, I920.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.

To allwhomitmayconcern:
Be i known that I, VINCENT A. BU H- Hon'rz, a citizen of the United States, resid- 'ing at Cumberland, in the county of Allegany, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in L1 cense-Plate Holders for Automobiles, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
' This invention relates to devices for se- I curing number plates or license tags to auto- I. obvious andwill in mobiles, and more particularly to a simple device for enabling the rapid and facile attachment of the tag to its supporting bracket.
The primary object of this invention is to provlde a device of the above character which can be inserted into either registering holes or slots in the bracket and tag members by a slight pressure on the thumbhold and which will thereafter lock the members by a slight turn of the device or by swinging the pivoted lock bar transversely to the. position it occupiedwhen passing through the registering apertures.
. A :turther o ject 0 These and other objects will in part be part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawingswhich show by wayof I illustration one embodiment of the inven- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dc form of slots, is adapted to be attached to.v any desired form of bracket 3, which, in the present case, is shown as elongated and provided with an extended slot 4. The holder'' which comprises the feature of this invert-- tion includes a metallic shank 5 provided on its outer .end with an integral flat-thumbhold or wing nut 6 havin an innershoul- .der 7, the inner shoulder? abutment hereinafter set forth. The inner end of-the shank 5.is slotted as shown at 8,

Specitication of Letters Patent. Patented N 0v. 3Q, 1920.
providin two spaced ears 9 between which .1s. 1vota ly mounted, as at 10, a lock bar 11.
n the preferred form, the anchor pin 10 for this lock bar is given a sli ht amount of play b elongating the slot 12 in the lock bar 11. his is for the purpose of permitting the lock bar to swing more easily to the transverse locking position.
Loosely surrounding the shank 5 is an annular soft rubber washer 13, which, at each end, is provided with a metallic facing comprising a preferably sheet metal washer 14 having an inturned annular flange 15 crimped or otherwise forced into the inner bore of the rubber washer 13. In this manner, the rubber washer is provided with a facing at each end, which facings are permanently united thereto in a most effective and simple-manner. Y
In using this device, the round hole 2 of the license tagis brought into register with a slot 4 of the bracket, and then by compressing the rubber washer toward the thumbhold, the lock bar may be swung into line with the axis of the shank and the shank of the holder then inserted through the registering holes of the tag and bracket, after which the lock bar is swung to a transverse position to hold the bracket and tag in proper position. If the license tag is provided -.W1tl1 an elongated slot instead of a hole, the holder can be inserted through the freglstering longitudinal slots of the bracket and tag respectively, and then by holding the wing nut firmly between the thumb an forefinger, the rubber washer can be compressed and the shank given a half turn, so that the lock bar will lie transversely across the slot of the bracket to hold the tag in supported position. It is of course obvious that instead of using two of these holders as shown in Fig. 1, any suitable arrangement may be availed of'whereby one'will hold the ta and bracket in supported position.
t will be noted that a device of this char- ,acter is entirely rust-proof, is very simple in construction, and iseflc'ective to hold the bracket in position and prevent it from rat- T e metallic facings for each end of the rubber washer. constitute rigid surfaces against which the bracket or ta abut at the tive means for turning the. lock bar while -one end, and the shoulder 7 o the thumbthe rubber washer is under compression due to the inward pressure on the thumb-hold;
It will also be understoood that various modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the ap pended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 4 The combination of an 'apertured supporting bracket and an automobile number plate having an aperture adapted to register with the aperture of the bracket, a hold ing device therefor comprising a shank adapted to pass through said apertures and formed with an integral wing nut on its outer end, an annular rubber washer loosely ing a facing for the end of said rubber Washer and each havin an inwardly turned flange surrounding sai shank, and a fastening pin pivotally mounted on the inner end of said shank and adapted to be swung transversely of the longitudinal axis of said shank to hold said number plate to said bracket.
In testimony whereof, I afiix ture.
VINCENT A. BUCHHOLTZ.
