Description
C. VERNER.
TRIPLE ROLLER FOR WATCHES.
APPLXCATRON FlLED JULY 26.1920.
TE-Ll llllllillllllllll UNITED STATES CLARENCE VERNER, OF CAIRO, ILLINOIS.
TRIPLE ROLLER FOR WATCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 16 1920 Applicationfiled July 26, 1920. Serial No. 398,895.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CLARENCE VERNER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Cairo, in the county of Alexander and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Triple Rollers for Watches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in watch constructions, and one object of the invention is to provide an improved roller construction which will be known as a triple roller and which will be used in connection with the balance wheel forming part of the escapement.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction in this mechanism which will prevent the roller jewels from being broken or working loose.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this balance wheel roller that the three rollers may be formed integral with the hub thus forming a unitary structure which will be very strong and durable and not liable to easily break and which may further be easily replaced with a new one when necessary.
Another object of the invention is to provide'a construction of balance wheel roller which will be very efficient in operation and easy to construct.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through the works of a watch showing a balance wheel in side elevation and provided with the triple roller construction,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improved triple roller, and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a slightly modified construction.
The improved triple roller will all be formed in one piece and will be mounted upon the staff 1 of the balance wheel 2, thus forming a solid structure making it unnecessary to provide adjustment of the parts when the triple roller device is put in place upon the staff. This staff is rotatably mounted. through the medium of the pins 3 so that the staff can oscillate. The usual pallet fork 4 is provided and is provided with the customary arms 5 so that the fork may be rocked upon its pallet staff 6. The triple roller is provided with a hub 7 having an opening 8 formed therein to receive the balance staff 1 and this hub carries the upper and lower impulse rollers 9 and 10 and a safety roller 11 which will be positioned adjacent the lower end of the hub. The roller jewel 12 is semi-circular in cross section as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and has its upper and lower ends fitting into pockets formed in the upper and lower impulse rollers 9 and 10 so that this roller jewel will be securely held in place and firmly braced and thus prevented from being broken or easily worked loose from the impulse roller carrying it. The safety roller is provided with a cutout 13 and the pallet fork carries a block 14 which block carries a safety guard or pin 15 which extends into this cutout 13. it will thus be seen that as the balance wheel rotates first in one direction and then in an opposite direction, the roller ewel by striking arms 5 of the pallet fork will oscillate this fork upon its staff, and as this fork oscillates, the safety guard will have movement in the cutout 13 thus preventing the guard from interfering with proper rotation of the balance wheel. If it is necessary to make repairs, the balance wheel together with its standard or staff can be removed and will carry with it, the triple roller. The roller can then be removed from the staff and a new staff put in place. The roller can then be easily replaced upon the staff or an entire new roller put in place and the balance wheel put back into the works of the watch.
If desired the upper and lower impulse rollers 9 and 10 may be cut from opposite sides as shown in Fig. 1- thus lightening the rollers and further permitting the rollers to be evenly balanced.
I claim:
1. A roller construction comprising a hub having an opening formed therein for re ceiving a balance wheel staff, upper and lower impulse rollers carried by and rigid with the hub, a roller jewel carried by the impulse rollers and having its end portions positioned in sockets formed in the impulse rollers, and a safety roller carried by the hub beneath the lower impulse roller.
2. A roller construction comprising a hub having an upper impulse roller at one end and a safety roller at the other end, and a second impulse roller carried by the hub between the safety roller and first impulse roller, the impulse rollers being provided with cutouts forming pockets for receiving a roller jewel.
3. A roller construction comprising a hub, an upper impulse roller carried by the hub adjacent one end, a safety roller carried by the hub adjacent the opposite end thereof, a lower impulse roller carried by the hub between the upper impulse roller and safety roller, the impulse rollers being provided with alined roller jewel receiving pockets, and the safety roller being provided with a cutout positioned beneath the jewel receiving sockets of the impulse rollers.
4. A roller construction comprising a hub, impulse rollers rigid with the hub and having jewel receiving pockets for receiving a jewel extending between the rollers, and a safety roller rigid with the hub.
5. A roller construction comprising a hub, impulse rollers carried by the hub in spaced relation, a safety roller carried by the hub, the rollers being formed integral with the hub and the impulse rollers being cut from opposite sides to lighten and balance the rollers.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CLARENCE VERNER.
