Description
NITED STATES? ANN MARIA HARRIS, OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA IMPROVEMENT lN'STOVE-GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,909, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: V
Be it known that I, ANN MARIA HARRIS, of Columbus, in the county of Musoogee and State of Georgia, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Grates for Stoves; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a'perspective view of my improved stove-grate. Fig. 2 shows an end edge view of the same.
The object and nature of my invention are to economize fuel by reducing the depth of the fire-box in the Iron Witch and other directdraft cooking-stoves, also causing a draft under the oven sufficient to utilize all of the heat made by the fuel, and likewise preventing too great a heat of the bottom of the stove by keepin g a body of embers from lying on it; and my invention consists in securing to the back or rear portion of the horizontal-ribbed fire-grate a series of vertical bars or fingers to serve the purpose of keeping the draft-fines of the stove clear of coals and other obstructions; also, in providing rear supports, cast with the grate, to admit of it being dumped forward so as to discharge thelive embers onto the summerhearth, to be there used'when desired.
General Description. The horizontal or flat portion of the grateAis made with bars and open spaces in the usual manner, provided with journals a a, on which it is mainly supported, and which allows the grate to be tilted forward to dump and discharge its contents. To the rear bar B of the grate A is attached a series of vertical bals b b b, to form grates on the rear or back of the fire-box, so as to prevent the embers from being drawn into the lines or any obstruction from getting in to. choke up under and around the oven. To the rear bar B are legs at d, cast with it, to hold it horizontally in its place, and, at the same time, is in a position" to be tilted forward to discharge live coals onto the hearth of the stove for broiling or other purposes.
The legs (I (I give the grate a firm support, they being quite tapering. Their bottom ends being small, they will not be obstructed, in
finding their place, by the ashes fallin g through the grate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A grate provided with a series of vertical bars, I) b b, to form a rear grate to the fines, the same being supported on the legs :1 d and the journals to a, to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
, ANN MARIA HARRIS.
