Be it known that I, EWALD E. S'rniair, a citizen of the Unitedl States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and btate of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Cannon, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy cannon and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character, similar in appearances to the ordinary cannon, whereby a. large number of small spherical shaped projectiles may be ejected therefrom in quick succession.
Another object is to construct a novel toy cannon that will be perfectly harmless in its,
use and highly efficient in its operation; furthermore, one that will be simple in its construction, durable and wherein none of the parts are liable to break or become out of order.
Another object is to provide means whereby the barrel of the cannon may be elevated to different angles for throwing the projectile to different distances.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and eiiicient means foroperating the device so that the projectile may be brought in alinement with the bore of the cannons barrel and ejected therein. and therethrough.
Gtlier objects and theadvantages thereof will appear in the detailed description below and in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken centrally through my invention.

By referring` to the accompanying' drawings by numerals, it will be seen that 1l designates the barrel of the cannon having the central bore 2 extending throughout its length, a front sight 3 and a rear sight 4 are mounted adjacent the extremities of the barrel in any suitable manner.
An arcuate stand 5 is provided with the feet 6 and a stop 7 which is struck upwardly from the body of the stand. fIhe bracket 8 is bent so as to form an upright portion and an arcuate portion will rest upon the stand 5 so as to bel slidably mounted thereon by means of the bands 9. The rear portion of the arcuate portion of the bracket 8 is provided with a pair of tongues 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
A container 11 is fixedlyattached to the upright portion of the bracket 8 in any suitable manner and is substantially heart shaped in cross section so as to provide the bottom channel 14 for receiving the bottommost projectiles12. A groove 13 is provided in the top portions of the container 11 for receiving the barrel 1 as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawing. The container 11`is provided with a rear open end which is closed by the rear bracket 15 which has an opening 16 adapted to register with the channel 14 so that the projectiles 12 may pass therethrough. Abrace 17 istiXedly attached to the inner face of the bracket 15 by means of the rivet 18 and this brace is substantially U-shaped and provided with an aperture for receiving the spindle 19 which passes also through the bracket 15. A cog wheel 20 is mounted upon the spindle 19 and is keyed thereto. This cog wheel 20 is provided with the teeth 21 so as toform spaces 22 therebetween. It should also be noted that the teeth 21areformed so as to space apart their ends, thereby making the openings larger at the periphery of the teeth 21. A disk 23 is also mounted upon the spindle 19 and is attached to the cog wheel 20 in any suitable manner and is provided with peripheral openings 24 which are adapted to register with the openings 22 in the cog wheel 20. By referring especially to Fig. 2 of the drawing it will he seen that these openings 24 are substantially recl tangular in shape and will therefor prevent the projectiles 12 which are situated in the opening 22 from falling out. i
A drum 28 surrounds the `wheel 2O and the disk23 and is provided at its top portion with a notch shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. A plurality of packing lips 25 are struck fromthe disk 23 and arranged in a circle. A spring 32 is attached to the bracket 15 by means of a rivet and extends around the wheel 20 and the disk 23 so as to have the spindle 19 passed therethrough. rllhe spring then extends upwardly so as to form a spring hammer 33 the top Vof which will register with the uppermost opening 24. An operating lever 31 is pivotally mounted upon the spindle 19 and is adapted to work within the slot provided in the guide 30. which is situated to one side of the drum 2S. By referring especially to Fig. 2 of the 5 drawin it will loe seen that when the' lever 31 is raised to its uppermost position within Y the guide 30 it will engage one ot the lips 25 after which the lever may be pushed downwardly thus causing one of the lips 25 to crack the hammer 33. By then Vpushing the lever 31 to its bottommost position lin the guide way 30, the hammer 33 will loe 'released and allowed to strike the projectile 12 situated in the uppermost opening 2 4 therebyiorcing same into the loarrel` 2 with suliicient momentum so that same will pass therefrom. The breech mechanism. consistingot the bracket 15, the wheel 20,V the disk 23,- and the mechanism mounted thereon may all be detached from the remaining portions of the cannon and attached thereto as may be desired. reterring especially to Figs. 1 and 320i? the drawing it will be seen that a pin lOYis provided adapted to register with the aperture l1 provided in the bracket 15. This pin 4Q is formed of resilient material and is carried upon the bottom of the con- -t'ainerin Aany suitable manner. VBy having this pin 40 formed of resilient material, it will be seen that the tongues may be passed through the apertures provided in the bracket v after which the pin 40 may be passed through the `aperture lljloy bending same so as to register therewith. The pin then will have a tendency to extend in alinement with, the sides ot the container 11 thereby causing su cient trictionto hold the breech mechanism thereto.` When the wheel is rotated by means of the lever3-1 in themanner described it will be seen that j the projectile 12 will pass through the open ing 16 in the bracket 15, so as to -be positioned in one of the Yopenings 22 and the wheel 20. Wien the wheel is then rotated it will be seen that the projectile 12 will be delivered successively to a registering position with the bore'2 and so as to be successively 'ejected therethrough means of the springhammer 33 which will be raised'hy the cooking lips 25,. lt will also be -seen that the cooking lips25 are so arranged that-the hammer 33 will be in a raised position when the same is vdirectly over theV teeth121 and -hecause of 'the sudden termination of the lips which are struck from the disk 23, the hammer will be suddenly released and allowed tol strike the projectile 12. j In order to throw 'the Iprojectiles f12 to different distances it will be seen thatk the loracket is slidably mounted upon the arcuate stand 5 so that same may be moved thereon thereby elevating or depressing the barrel 1. A stop 7 .provided softhatfthe 65 barrel 5 will always be inan elevated vvpositionso that the projectiles 12 will roll toward the opening 16. j
4Having thus described my invention it will be seen lthat l have produced a toy cannon which is constructed so as to resemble an ordinary cannon and will afford considerableamusement to young children and at the saine time is perfectly harmless and that the partsthereor are not liable to become easily broken or to become `out of order. lt will also be seen that the device is capable of being cheaply and easily manufactured and therefore sold at a low cost upon the market. ,Y HavingV thus described my invention what l claim as new is 1.
