" CUTTING-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed lliarch 31, 1919. Serial No. 286,284.
To all "iv/20m it may coerce m:
it known that l, FRANK P. MILLER, a citizen of the United States. residing at hleadvilhs. in the county of Crawford and ate of Pennsylvania, have invented new l zilscful Improvements in (.luttingTools, which the following); is a sg iecifioationl This invention relates to cutting tools and consists in certain improvements in the con.- struction thereof as will be hercinaiter fully described and po ted out in the claims.
lvlorc particul y the invention to that ty isc. of tools. comn'lonly used as i illing fritters and comprises a carrier, or head, with inserted blades. in some respects this invention is an improvement over the construction shown in my former Patent, emit. dated Oct. 23 191?:
The invention illu trated in the accompanying drawings as follows 7 T no 1 is a side elevation of th cutter. m section on the line l--f v in Fig.1. 2. the blades being" here arranged for face milling.
2 shows shown in 1.
Fig. 3 a side elevation, partly in section of the cutter head involving the principles of myinvention arranged for slabbing.
Fig. 1- a side elevation of one of the out tine; blades.
Fig. 5 an elevation of the fillet.
Figs. (3 and 7- elevations of the wedge member.
1 marks the carrier, or head. This is provided with the longitudinally or axially arranged groove 2 in which are arranged the cutting blades 3. A groove 4 is provided along one wall of the groove 2 and a socket 5 is provided inthe face of the cutting blade adjacent the roove e. A fillet 6 is placed in the socket o and when so'placod'can be inserted in the groove l as the cutter slid into the cutter holding; grooveQ. the groove 4t. extending" through the end of the cutter head for this purpose.
A radially arranged and cylindrically shaped socket '7 is provided adjacent to the cutter groove 2 and passes through the bottom of the groove 4-. A wedge member 8 is slidingly mounted in this socket 7 and has a wedge surface 9 engaging the fillet 6. The wedge surface 9 is preferably serrated and engages serrations 10 in the fillet G, the effect an end view ot the cutter -ment in the cutter.
From this it will be observed that the thrust on the cutter not only forces the cutter against the side wall of the groove 2 but also inwardlytoward the bottom of the pyroove. The bottoms of the grooves or slots 2 are inclined in the usual manner so that the cutters may be adjusted with relation to the diameter of the cutter as a whole. It will be observed that the wedge member 8 in the form of a cylindrical plug fitting the socket 7 one face ofthe plug being cut away to give the wedge surface 9. This wedge surface therefore, extends some distance along the fillet and at the same time there is a smooth sliding fit between the member 8 and the wall of the socket. In some respects thewedge member separatefrom the screw is an improvement over my former structure and whilel prefer to provide the interlocking feature involving the serrated wedge face and the serrations on the fillet when considered with relation to the broader phases of my invention this may be om tted.
In the preferred construction shown in Figs. 1. and 2 there is (renew-threaded Patented Nov. 9, i920.
socket having: its axis centrally located in the cutter holding groove 2. this socket extending from the rear face of the carrier or beach A screw 12 is placed in these screw threads and en rao'es the rear end of the cutting blade. The cutting blade is preferably notched at 18 and the screw preferably of wedge members may be varied from one to several as desired depending on the class of work for which the cutter is designed.
