MARIO AROSIO, OF MILAN, ITALY.
PROCESS FOR INCREASING THE STRENGTH AND ELIMINATING THE I-IYG-ROSCOPICITY OF WOODEN MATERIALS AND ARTICLES GENERALLY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1920.
Application filed June 23, 1919. Serial-No. 306,194.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARIO Anosro, manufacturer, subject of the King of Italy, resident of Milan, 2 Via Carlo Gattaneo, in the Kingdom of Italy, have invented new and useful Processes for Increasing the Strength and Eliminating the Hygroscopicity of /Vooden Materials and Articles Generally, of which the following is a specification.
The subject matter of the present invention is a process for increasing the strength and eliminating the hygroscopicity of wooden articles generally and especially of screw propellers in order to increase their resistance to impacts, shocks, stresses and vibrations to which they are subjected when working.
According to the invention, the wood arti cles such as screw propellers are fitted with a covering or bandage of vulcanized fiber, this bandage being secured to the wood in any suitable manner. The wood thus bandaged or enveloped is then coated with a film of celluloid or acetyl cellulose deposited thereon by the process forming the subject matter of the application filed on even date herewith and bearing Serial No. 306,193, or it may be deposited by any other suitable process.
The articles thus obtained are possessed of great strength and their surface is impermeable and non-hygroscopic.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a propeller blade treated by my method, part of said blade being broken away for the purpose of illustration.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View of the same.
In the drawing a is the body ofa propeller, Z) the bandage and 0 the coating film of celluloid or cellulose. The bandage is made by means of a band or strip of vulcanized fiber wound on the body of the propeller so as to form an envelop.
Having now described my invention and how the same is to be carried out, what I claim as my invention is: v
1. Process for increasing the strength and eliminating the hygroscopicity of fibrous articles, consisting in enveloping or bandaging the wood with vulcanized fiber and then applying to the wood thus bandaged a coating film of celluloid or acetylcellulose deposited thereon.
2. Articles such as screw-propellers bandaged with vulcanized fiber and coated over with a film of celluloid or acetylcellulose in order to increase their strength and diminish their hygroscopicity.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MARIO AROSIO.
