" for attaching legs to tables, whereby the legs Fig. et is a perspective view of the upper end UNITED STATES PATENT CFETGE.
JAOOB O. MILLER AND EDSON S. ARMSTRONG, OF SUNBURY, OHIO.
l IMPROVEMENT IN TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,655, dated February l1, 1873.
To all whom 'at may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB C. MILLER and EDsoN S. ARMSTRONG, of Sunbury, in the county of Delaware and State ol' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,` reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification. y
The nature of our invention consists iu the' construction and arrangement of certain means ca-n easily be attached and detached at will, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the saine, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of a table-leg, with a section oi' that part or post of the table in which the same is inserted. Fig. 2 is abottom viewof said post. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the casting inserted in. the post, and
of the table-leg.
A represents one of the posts in a table, in which a leg, B, is to be inserted, said post and leg being made in any desired form, plain or ornamented. In the lower end of the post A is inserted and firmly secured a tubular casting, O, having two vertical grooves, a a, formed in its inner side and opposite each other. On the inside of the casting O, and a short distance below the upper end, are formed two inclines, b b, each extending from one groove, a, to the other. The post A is further provided with a vertical hole, d, extending from the upper end of the casting O upward for a suitable distance to receive a stem or tenon, D, formed on the upper end of the leg B. Through this stem or tenon D is passed a pin, e, as shown in Fig. 4.
When the leg is to beattached to the table the tenon D is passed up through the casting C into the hole d, the ends of the pin e passing through the grooves a a. The leg`is then turned, when the` ends of the pin c will move up on the inclines b band secure the leg, the
upper end of the leg and the lower end of the post forming a tight joint.
The leg can readily be detached when desired, which is very convenient, especially in shipping. The same means for attaching and detaehing may be used for the legs of other articles ot furniture as well as for tables.
The casting C is of such forni as to allow it to be inserted in the post A, and beveled on its lower end so as to allow the shoulder of the leg B to tclosely to the post. The part of the leg coming in contact with the lower part of the post A extends beyond the casting O, and has a firm bearing all around against the post A. The extension D of the leg B is a part of the leg, being turned up from the same, thus dispensing with metal parts usually used in fastening-s, thus reducing the expense in manufacturing, and by extending the part D into the post A, and having the shoulder upon the top ot' the leg, it makes a stronger and more durable device than heretofore used, with a less number ot' parts and at a reduced cost. The further advantage is gained by making vthe part D a part of the leg A, as otherwise a hole would necessarily be made in the leg to insert the part D, which would weaken the leg and probably split the saine when the device was put in use.-
We are aware that the incline b, with catches or lugs, has been before used in bedsteads, and we do not therefore broadly claim such device; but
Having thus fully described our invention, what we doel-aim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The table-leg B formed with a shoulder at the top, and the extension D formed upon the leg and provided with the pin c and used in connection with the casting O and post A, all constructed and arranged for operation as and for the purpose specitied.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
J AOOB C. MILLER. EDSON S. ARMSTRONG.
