Description

L c. SCHROEDER. v STAPLE AND NAIL FULLER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC-29, I919.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
O O O PATENT OFFICE- CHARLES SGHROEDER, OF NEILLSVILLE, WISCONSIN.
STAPLE AND NAIL FULLER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pate ted Oct. 12, 1920.
Application filed December 29, 1919. Serial No. 347,939.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SGHROEDER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Neillsville, in the county of Clark and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple and Nail Pullers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion thereof.
3/ y invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for pulling nails and staples, or for lifting band iron strips from packing boxes or lids thereof, and for otherwise exerting a prying leverage action, and more particularly of that type comprising a work engaging member adapted to be driven into operative position to an article to be pried and pivotally connected with a suitable fulcrum base whereby to afford a firm support for the tool in operation thereof.
It is in general the object of my invention to simplify and otherwise improve the structure and to increase the efiiciency of devices of this character and it is more particularly my object to provide a device wherein a direct driving action may be provided for the work engaging portion thereof, so as to facilitate its engagement under a nail head or the shank portion of a staple to be pulled.
A specific object in this latter connection resides in the provision of a fulcrum base member in pivotal connection with the main lever portion of the device and which is adapted to extend in longitudinal alinement with the work engaging toe portion of the lever member to facilitate driving said member under an article to be pried.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of the parts as hereinafter described and defined by the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a nail and staple puller embodying my invention, an extension handle member being shown in section upon the shank of the lever member of the device.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, which show my invention embodied in a nail and staple puller, there is provided a main lever member having its intermediate portions enlarged and having its endfportions disposed at an obtuse angle to each other and shaped to form a handle shank 5 and a work engaging toe 6 respectively, said work engaging toe being flattened to provide a decidedly oblong cross section and having a V-shaped recess 7 in its end adapted to receive the shank of a nail or other member to be pulled, the flattened shape of the work engaging toe facilitating its insertion under a member to be pried, such as the bight portion of a staple or the like, whereby the staple will not slip off of the toe as the prying action is instituted. The heel portion of the lever member is cut away at its sides to define a pivot lug 8 and a pair of seating shoulders 9 at the side of the pivot lug. The shoulder 9 extends concentrically with the pivot point of the lug 8 and toward the level thereof. This concentric portion of the shoulder is intersected by a downwardly and forwardly extended radial face 13, which face in turn is intersected by a short concentric shoulder portion 13, the same merging into the fiat sole face of the lifting lever. Thus a pair of V- shaped pockets are formed for the forwardly extended correspondingly shaped fingers 11, which fingers together with heel portions 10 thereof correspond in outline to the shoulders just defined, the said fingers being integral parts of a fulcrum base and driving'block 11. The bifurcated cars 10 are pivotally connected to the pivot lug 8 by a bolt 12, which bolt, best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, is of slightly less diameter than the bolt aperture of the lug 8, whereby strain upon said bolt is eliminated.
I have thus provided an exceedingly simple and effective device which may be driven into prying or pulling relation to a nail or staple by blows imparted to the rear end of the fulcrum base member, thus facilitating the convenient application of the device, and the pulling or prying operation may then be carried out by simply depressing the lever shank 5. If desired an extension handle section 14 may be fitted on this shank for the purpose of procuring a greater leverage.
While I have shown and described my improved device as being particularly adapted for use as a nail or staple puller, it will be appr'eciatedthat the device may be applied to pinch bar or similar uses, in which instance the toe portions of thedevice may be made blunter, and various other changes and modifications of structure may be made to meet differing conditions of use and manufacture, Without departing in any manner from the spirit of my invention. What is claimed is: e 1
A device of the class described comprising a 10 lever member, having a heel portion which is cut away to form a pivot lug having concentrically disposed shoulders that extend toward the toe portionof the lever, the concentric shoulders being intersected by down- 15 Wardly and forwardly extended radial faces the same being interrupted by a second set of concentric portions, whereby V-shaped recesses are formed, a driving block in pivotal union with the heel of the lever, the driving block being provided With forwardly extended fingers Which correspond in outline to the shoulders formed in the heel portion of the lever, to oppose driving strain of said block, and a loose pivot connection between the fingers of the block and lever.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Neillsville, in the county of Clark and State of Wisconsin.
' CHARLES SCHROEDER.
