Description

PATENT GEEIoE.
BENJAMIN C. COOK, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,525, dated February 4, 1873i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN C. Coon, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and usef'ul Improvements in Broom- Hcad; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a broom-head, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to ena-ble others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which- Figure lis a perspective view' of my broom. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, and Fig. 3 a transverse, section of the broom-head.
vA represents a sheet-metal case, made ta.
pering in the usual form of a broom-head. In this case is inserted a Wooden Wedge-shaped bar, B, of such dimensions as to be firmly wedged in the smaller end of the case. In
the center of this bar B, from the outer side, is bored a hole of suitable depth to receive the end of the handle O,`which is screwed onto a screw, a, fastened in the bottom of said hole, or passing into the same from the inner side ot the bar. D represents the broom-corn, which is inserted in the case A, and fastened by the following means: In the case A are made a series of slots, b b, through which are passed metal loops d d projecting on both sides of the case. On each side of the case, through the ends of the loops d d, is passed a metal cap, E, and between said cap and the side of the case is driven a wooden wedge, G. The two Wedges G G draw or force the sides of the case inward, and thus clamp the broom-corn iirmly in the same.
Vhen the broom-corn is worn out the Wedges G G may be withdrawn, the 01d corn taken out, and new inserted and fastened.
Glue may also be used to fasten the inner ends of the corn in the case.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, s-
The combination of the case A, having slots b b, the loops rl d, caps E E, and wedges GG, all substantially as and for thepurposes herein set fort-h.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this Sth day ot' January, 1873.
BENJ. C. COOK.
