IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKBOARD-ERASERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135.1187, dated; February 4, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

A is a wooden block or the back of the eraser, of suitable size, usually about three inches wide and eight inches long, with its side edges grooved to afford a hold for the hand, as represented in the drawing. B is a wadding; and U represents a carpeting over the wadding,

the wadding and carpeting being equal in size to the side of the block. Over these layers I place my corduroy or ribbed covering D, which is of sufficient size to lap over the inclosed soft layers onto the wood A, so as to be confined to the wood by means of a strip of leather, E, and nails F, as seen in the drawing.

The corduroy covering D is so placed that the ribs thereof run longitudinally, as repre sented 5 but" I do not confine myself to that particular arrangement, as the ribs may run transversely or diagonally, if desired; but the eraser would be rendered less useful thereby.

The advantages of this corduroy or ribbed covering is, the chalk-dust will be detached from the blackboard by the ribs and will find a lodgment in the grooves between the ribs, from whence it readily drops into the chalkbox below. The chalk-dust is not compressed and ground into the surface, as in the ordinary eraser, but the ribbed wearing surface is kept clean while it perfectly wipes and leaves `a clean surface on the board.

I do not confine myself to the particular goods known as corduroy, as other ribbed goods maybe employed.

Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A blackboarderaser having a surface composed of ribs and grooves, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. An eraser having a face covered with corduroy or similar. material over a soft cushion of wadding and carpeting, or similar material, substantially as shown and described.
