. STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 5, 1920.
Application filed July 2, 1919. Serial No. 303.120.
T0 aZZ w from it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN Roenns FLAN- NERY and ETHAN I. Donns, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in staybolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for steam boilers and 5 more particularly to mounting the head of the staybolt and the means for capping the same, the object of the present invention being to provide a simple staybolt structure embodying a bearing sleeve for the head of the bolt and a cap or closure, which latter shall have detachable engagement with the boiler sheet inwardly from the outer face of the latter and a short distance from the opening in the boiler sheet through which the bearing sleeve passes, whereby the cap may be removably secured to the boiler sheet to inclose the bolt head and its mounting, without the use of bolts or rivets or other securing means which would overlie the outer face of the boiler sheet.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional view illustrating an embodiment of our invention.
1 represents a portion of an outer boiler sheet having a threaded opening 2 through which a section of an externally threaded bearing sleeve 3 passes. The sleeve 3 is made interiorly with a concave seat 42 for the rounded head 5 of a staybolt 6 and a portion of the bore of the sleeve, inwardly from the seat 4, is made tapering, as shown at 7, to permit lateral play of the staybolt. In the drawing, the bearing sleeve 3 is shown projecting beyond the planes of both the inner and outer faces of the boiler sheet, but a shorter sleeve might be employed without detracting from the efliciency of the sleeve as a bearing member for the head of the stay bolt. In fact, the hearing sleeve might terminate at its outer end practically flush with its mounting, so as the plane of the outer face of the boiler sheet.
is important that the head of the staybolt and its mounting shall be effectually closed steam tight, and in order to accomplish this and at the same time facilitate the ready attachment of a closure to and its detachment from the boiler sheet independently of the staybolt mounting, the features now to be described are employed: An annular groove 8 is made in the outer face of the boiler sheet and encircles the opening 2, said groove being spaced a short distance from said opening. One wall of the groove 8 (preferably the wall farthest removed from the opening 2 and bearing sleeve 3) is threaded as at 9. A cap or closure 10 is disposed over the head of the staybolt and to inclose the same and the edge portion of said cap or closure enters the annular groove, said cap or closure having a threaded portion 11 near its edge to mesh with the threaded wall of the groove and a washer 12 may be disposed be tween the edge of the cap and the bottom of the grooves. The cap or closure is thus removably secured to the boiler sheet inwardly from the plane of the outer face of said boiler sheet. The cap or closure may be hemi-spherical in shape and provided with an enlargement 10 to receive a wrench.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, and a mounting for the head of a staybolt, said mounting entering the opening in the boiler sheet, of a cap or closure for said mounting having threaded connection with the boiler sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, and a mounting for the head of a stay-bolt said mounting threaded through the opening in the boiler sheet, of a cap or closure for said mounting having threaded COI111BC tion with said boiler sheet inwardly from the outer face of the latter.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening and also having an annular groove encircling said opening, said groove having a threaded wall, of a mounting for the head of a staybolt, said mounting having threaded connection With the Wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, and amp or closure entering the annular groove in the boiler sheet and having a threaded portion to engage the threaded Wall of said groove. 7
4. In a staybolt structure, the combination of a boiler sheet having an opening and also having an annular groove surrounding said opening and, spaced. from the latter, said annular groove having a threaded Wall, a bearing'sleeve threaded through said opening, a staybolt having a head mounted in said bearing sleeve, and a cap 'inclosing the head of the stay-bolt, the edge portion of the cap entering the annular groove in the boiler sheet and having a threaded portion to engage the threaded Wall of said groove.
In testimony whereof, We have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
