Description

` A. E. CAFMEYER.
DOOR 0R WINDOW LATCH. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 27, 1919.

PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER E. CAFMEYER, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR OR WINDOW LATCH.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER E. CAF- Mnren, a citizen of the TUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door or Window Latches, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. Y
The invention relates to door and window latches, and primarily to d vices of this type which are provided in addition to the usual door or window lock.
The object of the invention is the provision of an extremely simple construction which can be sold cheaply and will effectively perform the function for which it is designed.
The invention has as an additional object the production of an arrangement of parts which coperate with each other so as to resist opening` of the door and in which the resistance offered by the device will be increased proportionately to the force applied to the door.
The invention also has as an object an arrangement which can readily be applied to a door or window to prevent its being opened, yet can be positioned so as to not interfere with the opening or closing of either when this is desired.
The invention will be explained and more readily understood when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which the construction therein illustrated will be explained in detail inthe following specification. and in which- Figure l is a plan sectional view of a door and frame showing the device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is perspective view of a window construction showing the device applied thereto;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device showins; same in its extended condition; and
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the structure shown in Fig. 2.
Generally speaking the invention contemplates a structure one part of which is permanently secured to the door frame, this portion having suitably secured thereto a plurality of elements which coperate with each other when so arranged to prevent the opening of the door or window, yet may be Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
Application led October 27, 1919. Serial No. 333,450.
readily positioned so as to not interfere with the opening and closing thereof.
In the structure of the invention as illustrated in the drawings, the use of a member lO is contemplated. The member is secured to the door frame Il between the door l2 and the frame by means of the screws I3. This member projects inwardly beyond the door a suitable distance and vis provided with one part of a hinge 14. A strut or stay element l5 having one edge thereof provided with the other portion to complete the hinge le is secured to this part l0. This element l5 extends at an angle toward the door from the end of the member l0 and has hingedly secured thereto the latch or bolt 16 which extends across the opening between the door and the frame. This portion 16 has in addition to the swinging movement a slight vertical movement with relation to the other members l0 and 15, this being permitted by virtue of the space 17 provided between the portions forming the hinge 18. The portion 16 has a head 19 projecting therefrom which is provided with the notches 940-20, this head being inserted in the slot or aperture 9.1 provided in the element l0, when the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. l.
By means of the head and notches and aperture 2l, and by virtue of the loose connection between the portions` 15 and I6. the possibility of separation of the parts and consequentopeningT of the door by the manipulation of the door is prevented. To arrange the device so that the door may be opened and closed without interference. the parts l0 and 16 will be disconnected. This will permit the parts to assume the position shown in the dotted line position of Fig. l.
The embodiment of the invention when applied to a window will preferably correspond in all respects with the structure shown in Figs. l and 9.. only differing` in the addition of a holdingV dog or detent 22 which is hinged so as to be swung into and out of engagement with the head 19. This detent is provided so as to prevent a person from passing` a knife blade or other similar instrumentality between the window frames into engagement with the element 16, to lift it out of its connection with the portion l0 and thereby effect a disconnection of the parts and a consequent opening of the window.
In practice it has been found that when the device is applied to a door, th e maximum strain is exerted at the juncture of the parts 10 and 16. Therefore as the parts yield at this point the connection 15 swings toward this point. rIhis naturally assists to hold the elements in connected relation and adds tothe resistance necessary to cause a separation of the parts at this connection;
From the foregoing it is evident that an extremely simple and inexpensive and eicient construction isi provided Which can easily be applied, and Which will effectively secure a door or Window against being opened and Which can be positioned so as not to interfere with the opening and closingiof the same when this is desired` 'Having thus described the invention, it is obvious'that changes and modifications may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to cover by Letters `Patent is: A
1. In a device of the class described the combination ofl an element adapted to be secured to a door frame, a member hingedly secured to said element, a member hingedly secured to the first mentioned member, said last mentioned member being permitted to be arranged transversely to said element and having a head projecting therefrom, and an aperture provided insaid element to receivesaidf head, when said member is arranged transversely to said element, said head and aperture cooperating with each other to prevent the separation of said members.
2. In a device of the class described the combination of an element adapted 'to be secured to a doorframe, a member hinged thereto, a second member hinged to the first thereto, and a member hingedly secured to the first mentioned member, the hinge of said last mentioned member providing a connection which permits said member to be moved with respect to the first mentioned member, said vertically movable member and said element having coperating lmeans for releasably securingsame together. v Y
4t. YIn' a device of theclass described the combination of an element adapted to be secured to a door frame, a member hinged thereto, and a member hingedly secured to the iirst mentioned member, said last mentioned member and said element having coperating means for releasably securing same together, and saidsecond mentioned member being vertically movable with respect to said iirst mentioned member to permit said second mentioned member and said element to be connected and disconnected. Y y
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 27th day of September, A D. 1919. l
