, JOSEPH WILHELM AND CHARLES A. Keys, or ivioKEEs ROCKS, PENNSYLVANIA.
V FILM-REEL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOSEPH WILHELM and CHARLES A. KAYs, citizens of the United States, residing at McKees' Rocks, in thecountyof Allegheny and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F il1nReels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to film reels and more particularly to new and useful improvements in the hub construction.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a hub of the type set forth and in a, manner as hereinafter described, which has a detachable and replaceable clamping mem her for engaging the end of the film, adapted to be wound on the hub, thereby permitting the replacement of the clamping member when broken in use and thus elim nating the necessity of discarding or scrapping the entire reel, as is now required by reels of the construction commonly in use.
Further objects of this invention are to provide a device of the character described,
which is simplein its construction and arrangement, strong durable and efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To'the accomplishment of these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the
, invention consists of the novel construction, combinat on and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, var1at1ons,'and
modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing forming a portion of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: I
Figure 1 is an end view, ofa film reel in accordance with this invention and illustrating the manner of securing the end of a film thereto.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View on line llll. Fig. 1.
F ig. 3 is a cross-sectional View on line IIIIII, Fig. 1.
l ig. 1 is a perspective view of the clamping member.
iieferring more in detail to the drawing,
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 14 1920 Application filed August 14, 1919. {5eria1'1 To.'317,411. i
there is shown in Fig. 1 a film reel comprising the hub 1 and the disks 2 and 3, respectively. I
The hub 1 is preferably constructed from sheet metal, formed cylindri'cally, and is provided on its outer edges with integrally formed lugs 4, adapted to be clenched upon the outer face of the respective disks 2 and 3,"which are pr'ovidedwith suitable slots 5 v for thepassage of, the lugs a and for the purpose of permanently securing the disks 2 and 3 to the hub 1. j v
The hub 1 is provided with a transversely extending slot 6, disposed approximately centrally thereof. The hub 1 is further formed with the gradual depression 7, the lowest point 8 thereof forming the forward edge of the slot .6, and with the gradual elevation 9, the highest point '10 thereof I forming the rear end of the slot 6-.
' A clamping tongue 11,'made fr'om'spring' metal and of less width than the width of the slot 6, extends through said'slot and has its rear end secured or riveted,a s at 12, to the posed inset portion 16 forminga seat for the reception of theclam'ping tongue 11, which is adapted for detachably securin the spring 15 to the hub 1. The ends 1? and 18, of the'clamping springf15, are curved slightly outwardly to facilitate the attach-.
ment of the end of the film "19 thereunder. It will be obvious that the construction of the depression 7 in the hub 1, in conjunction -with the curved end 141, of the clamping tongue 11, will readily permit and facilitate the insertion of the clamping spring 15, while thecurvature, as at 13, will assure the retention of the spring 15 by the clamping tongue 11. V
The clamping tongue 11, being of less width than the widthof the slot'6, the inset portion 16 of the clamping spring 15 will depend therein and be engaged by the longitudinal edges of the said slot and prevent liability of circumferential movement of the spring 15 When the inset portion 16, thereof, is seated under the clamping tongue 11.
It will here be noted that the utility of a film reel constructed Witha hub in accordance With this invention is not impaired if the clamping spring 15 is broken, as the latter may readily be replaced by another Without inconvenience to the operator.
From the foregoing description taken in connection With the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and the method or operation Will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the inven tion appertains, and Whilev describing the principle of operation or" the invention together \v-iththe device Which is now considered to be the best embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that the device shown is merelyillustrative and that various changes in thef'orm, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted'to Without departing from the principle: or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What We claim is: r
1. A. hub for film reels comprising a cylindrical body portion, a resilient clamping tongue extending transversely of said body portion, said tongue having its inner; end
secured to the inner face of the body portion and further having apart thereof arranged Within the body portion and the remaining part thereof positioned against the periphery of the body portion, and a removable clainping member positioned under said clamping tongue.
2. A hub for film reels comprising a cylindrical body portion, a clamping member extending circumferentially ofsa id body portion, and a transversely extending resilient clamping tongue for detachably clamping the said member to said body portion, said body portion being slotted and said tongue extending through the slot and having its inner end secured to the inner face of the body portion and said tongue further having member having an inset portion extending tures.
circumferentially of said body portion, and a resilient clamping tongue carried by said body portion and engaging said inset portion for detachably connecting said member to said body portion, said body portion-being slotted for the reception of the inset, said tongue extending through said slot and having its inner end secured to the inner face of the body portion. I
A. hub for film reels comprising a cylindrical body portion provided With a slot, a clamping member having an inset portion and extending circrlnferentially of said body, said inset portion adapted to seat in said slot, and a transversely extending resilientclamping tongue carried'by said body for detachably securing said member to said body by engaging said inset portion in said slot, said tongue extending through said slot and having its inner end secured to the inner face of the body portion and its outer end. arranged over the periphery of the body por tion. 7 p v 5- A hub for film reels comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion provided With a transverse depression gradually increasing. 1n depth from one end to the other, said body portion further provlded With a slot at the lowest point; of said depression, a resilient and transversely extending clamping tongue extending through said slot and having its inner end secured to the inner face of the body portion and its outer part arranged over said depresslon, and a circumferentially disposed clamping member having an inset portion extending in said slot" and'engaged by the tongue whereby said member is detachably secured in position. i
6. A hub for film reels comprising a body portion provided With a slot, a clamping tongue disposed transversely with, respect to said body portion and extending through said slot and having its inner end fixedly secured to the inner face of the body portion, and a clamping member having an inset portion extending in said slot and engaged by the tongue whereby said rnemberis detachably secured in position.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signa JOSEPH WILHELM. onARLEsA. KAYS.
