Description

C. A. MEBSMAN. FRUIT'JAR VISE. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 29, I919.
Patented s im. 14,1920.
Clarence A Newman Time/whom UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE A. MERSMAN, F HUBBARD, IOWA.
FRUIT-JAR VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 14,1920.
Application filed September 29, 1919. Serial No. 327,116.
. device and has for its primary object to provide a device of simple and substantial construction that will effectively grip a jar in a manner that the jar will be positively held against turning.
An object of the invention is to provide a gripping device of such construction that the entire circumference of a jar will be subject to equal pressure so as to accomplish a positive grip between the device and the ar.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a cross section viewwith a jar in place.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the flexi-v ble member. 1
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one manner in which the invention may be constructed the numeral 1 designatesa frame having a jar receiving opening 2. This frame is providedwith suitable clamps 3 by means of which the device may be fixed to a stationary support. Projecting laterally from one side of the frame are cars 4 in which is pivotally mounted a lever 5. Cooperating with one end portion of a handle is a locking element 6. The numeral 7 designates a gripping member constructed of flexible material in a manner to provide three strands 8, 9, and 10. Strands 8 and 9 are secured to the frame as indicated at 11 The intermediate portion of the member is looped with strand-l0 slidably mounted between the strands 8 and 9, and fixed to one end of a coil spring 12. The other end of the spring 12 is secured to the lever.
From the fore oing description takenin connection with t e accompanying'drawing it should be apparent that I provide a device of simple construction in which the gripping member is so constructed that a Very effective grip between the member and jar is accomplished. By providing a locking element the lever maybe locked in its operative position so that the operator may have both hands free to remove the lid of the jar. 7
It is of course to beunderstood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in other relations and therefore I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
What I claim is 1. A jar gripping device comprising a frame having a jar receiving opening, a lever pivoted intermediate its endsupon said frame, a flexible member adapted for encircling engagement with a jar disposedwithin said opening and having one end formed with spaced tongues secured to said frame and its other end reduced and formed with a single tongue disposed between said spaced tongues and a yieldable connection between said single tongue and said lever. 2. A jar gripping device comprising a frame having a jar receiving opening, an extension on said frame, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends upon said extension, a flexible member adapted for encircling engagement with a jar disposed within said opening and having one end secured to said frame, and a spring connected with' the other end of said flexible member and with one end of said lever.
- 3.- A .jar gripping device comprising a frame having a jar receiving opening, an extension on said frame, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends upon said extension, a
with said lever whereby to hold said lever in position with said spring under tension,
and said flexible member in gripping engagement upon the jar.
In testimony whereof I aflix my si CLARENCE MEBS ature.
