SELF LOCKING ANGLE COCK.
APPLICATION FILED Nov. 15,4919.

' To all wkomz't concern} ROBERT a McGA l-IEY, or Am sam, 'jwmmr;
snLr-Lo'cKrNe ANGLE-com} l Be it known that 1, ROBERT a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented -.ce rt ain new and useful Improvements in Self Locking Angle-Cocks,of which the follow a ing is a specification.
'Thisinv'ention relates to self-locking angle-cocks and has for an object to provide a cock of the kind havingimproved means for lockingin either open or closed condition, and whenin open Condition to position the handleunder the car to which the de-' vice is attached and under the train pipe.
With these and other objects in view, the
device comprises certain new and novel units, elements, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,v
which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a view of the device in side elevation;
' Fig. 2 is a view of the device in inverted plan as indicated by arrow 2 at Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking handle member; and, I
Fig. 4 is a perspective view disk.
The improved angle cock, which forms the subject matter of this application, comprises a body 10 of any approved type, containing a valve or cook of the turning plug type, the
of the rotating exact construction of which forms no part of the present invention. The housing is provided with a multiangular extremityll here shown ashexagonal, adapted to be attached to the train pipe 12 under a car indicated at 13. At its opposite downwardly inclin'ed end, the cock is provided with an internally threaded sleeve 14 adapted to receive a nipple 15 attached to the flexible pipe 16 in the usual well known manner.
The turning plug isprovided with a stem 17 to which is secured a disk 18 in any ap proved manner, as by a pin through the opening 19 of the disk, and through the stem of the plug. v I
The housing 10 has preferably cast integral therewith a segment 20, having stops 21 and 22, and a slot 23 proportioned and positioned to receive the lug 24 on the.

I Application filed November1 5, 1919. Serial No. 338,203.
: handle 25 is providedwith'a collar por tion 26, proportioned to embrace disk 18 and to be pivoted thereto as at-27. The handle.
is also providedwith one or more lugs 28' proportioned to engage in the openings 29 in Y the segment20. As shown in the drawings, 1
the lugsare two in number and the openings 29 are in groups of two; at open and closed position, it being understood, however, that the number of lugsand openingsin each group is immaterial to the invention. -The handle is also provided with a slot30- proportioned to pass over the lug 24 as indicated more particularly at-Figs. 11' and 8. K
In operation,'wh'en' the cockis open to per- I mitthe passage ofair through the train pipe and couplings, the handle 25 is disposed longitudinally directlv under and substantially,
paralleled with the train pipe 12. When the cock is to be closed, it is necessary to lift the handle from the position shown in, Fig. 1
to release the-lugs 28 from the openings 29, and swing the handle one quarter ofaturn f toengage the lugs 28 in the other groupof openings 29. In either open or closed posi lugs 28 in locking engagement with the openings-29. The stops 21 and 22 engage against the handle. at either limit, of its movement, also the lug 24 engages the ex- 7 tion, the weight of the handle 25 will hold tremities of the slot for a similar purpose.
. The position of the handle longitudinally beneath the train pipe is important to the,
present invention, forthereason that, with the handles of the cocks located otherwise. especially as at present employed, it is in position to be accidentally closed to shut off I air fromthe train. This has happened many times when unauthorized persons are boarding a car and step upon thecock handle. The cutting off of the air to the train results in accidents and the present invention is in tended as adding to the safety of operation with air brakes. V I 1 Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An angle cock comprising a housing, a turning plug, a segmental flange formed upon the housing and provided at either extremity with a stop and having a segmental slot formed inits face, a disk rigidly i secured to the turning plug and having a lugfitting and movable in the slot, a han dlemember provided with a collar embrac- I I ing the disk and proportioned to engage 7 2. The combination With a train pipe, of
an angle cock secured thereto and extend ing therebeyond, said angle cock -compris ing a housing connected with the train pipe, a turning plug rotatable in the housing,'and a handle secured to the turning plug and positioned beneath and in parallelism With the train pipe When communication is established through the cock, and at right angles to and extending laterally beyond the train pipe When communication is interrupted.
8. The combination With a train pipe of an angle cock secured thereto and comprising a housing: in communication With the train pipe, a turning plug mounted to rotate in the housing, a handle pivotally connected With the turning plug and adapted to swing upon the pivot on a variable plane constantly in parallelism With the axis of rotation of the plug and so positioned that the cock the handle is disposed beneath and in parallelism Wit-h the train plpe, and
means carried by the handle employing the eight of the handle for locking the cock in-open and closed position. 7
' 4. The combination With a train .Lpip'e,fo'f an angle cock secured thereto and extending therebeyond, said angle cock comprising a housing connected With the train pipe, the housing being provided with a segmental flange having a segmental slot formed in its face, a turning plug rotatable in the housing, and a'handle secured to the turning plug and positioned beneath and in parallelism With the'train pipe whencommuni cation is established through the cock, and at right angles to and extending laterally beyond the'train pipewhen communication is interrupted.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my-ihandv and seal at l/Vashington D. this 15th day of November, A, D., nineteen hundred and nineteen.
