- the invention relates to magazines for automatic pistols of the type wherein the magazine is carried in the handle of the pistol and has for its object to provide an inclined follower so inclined'that as the follower pushes upwardly on the shell the pushing power of the follower will be on the bullet end of the shell at the same time giving a tilting effect or action to each shell at each operation of the breech block and the bullet coming in contact with the upper end of the magazine before the base end of the shell thereby giving the shell a quick motion at the head end. . Be it known that I, RAY H. CHASE, a citizen of the Unitedfitates, residing at Alexandria, in the. county of Hanson, State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Magazine for Automatic Pistols; and 1 do hereby declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in- .vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1
The invention relates to magazines for automatic pistols of the type wherein the magazine is carried in the handle of the pistol and has for its object to provide an inclined follower so inclined'that as the follower pushes upwardly on the shell the pushing power of the follower will be on the bullet end of the shell at the same time giving a tilting effect or action to each shell at each operation of the breech block and the bullet coming in contact with the upper end of the magazine before the base end of the shell thereby giving the shell a quick motion at the head end. Also to provide a spring for feeding the follower block upwardly so that the bullet end of the shell sufficiently to cause the shells to loosen in the magazine and be forced upwardly by the magazine follower. v
With the above and other objects in view "the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The handle 2 18 provided with an upwardly and forwardly i iclinedchamber 3 for the reception of the magazine The magazine 1 is formed of metal and is substantially rectangular shaped in cross section. ably mounted in the chamber 5 of the magazine is the follower block 6, which follower block is normally forced upwardly by. a spring 7 disposed between the lower end of the follower block and the bottom of the magazine chamber. Follower block (Sis of a considerably smaller cross sectional area than the cross sectional area of the chamber 5 so that said block will freely move in the chamber. The upper end of the follower block 6 is provided with an inclined shell engagingflsurface 8 which is adapted to engage the shells and feed them upwardly so that they will enter the breech mechanism, at an incline. However, the apex end 9 of thefollower block forces the shells upwardly at their heavy ends. The base ends of the shells being in. engagement with the leafspring 10, which extends the entire distance of the magazine chamber atone side thereof, saidleaf spring forming means whereby the follower block 6 is kept in engagement with theforward wall 11 of the magazine chamber. i
It will be seen that as the follower block 6 is forced upwardly under the impulse of the spring 7 that the inclined surface 8 of the follower block will force the shells within the magazine upwardly in an inclined The bases 12 of the shells 13 engage the leafspring 10, thereby preventing the shells from getting horizontally in the chamber 5 in such a position that they will not feed upwardlyin an inclined position. The leaf spring 10 ha in engagementtherewith at its upper end, as at 1 1, a vibrator spring 15, said vibrator spring extending downwardly and having its lower end provided with a right angle portion 16 which engages a recess 17 carried by the leaf spring 10. The vibrator spring and the leaf spring are farther apart at their lower ends and gradually coming together at their upper ends. By providing the leaf spring 10 and the vibrator spring 15 it will be seen that duringthe firing of the pistol said springs will be vibrated, thereby breaking any jam there might be of the shells and causing said shells to be easily fed upwardly by the follower block 6. Slidproviding the vibrating spring and the leaf spring the shells 13 will feed upwardly with a positive action during slow or rapid firing. One side of the magazine is provided with an elongated slot 18, which slot adjacent its upper end is provided with semi-circular notches 19, which notches are of such a radius that the annular flange of a pin 21 will pass through the same when said annular flange is in registration therewith. Pin 21 passes into the follower block 6 and is adapted to be forced upwardly and downwardly by the finger when it "is desired to manually move the follower block. l/Vhen said follower block is being manually moved the finger is placed in engagement with the head 22 of the pin. Then it is desired to disassemble the magazineparts the finger is placed inengagement with the head 22, that is after the shells'have been removed from the magazine, then the pin 21 is moved to a position where its annular flange 20 will register with the notches 19, at which point the pin as a whole is pulledoutwardly so that the follower block 6 will be free.
From the above it will be seen that a magazine is provided for automatic postols wherein the shells will be fed upwardly in an inclined position, and one'wherein vibrating springs are provided, which vibrating springs engage the bases of the inclined shells, thereby not only preventing the shells from assuming a horizontal position, but also form means whereby any jamming action will be prevented during firing.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is z- 1. A magazine for automatic pistols comprising a casing adapted to be received by a chamber in the handle of the pistol, said casing extending upwardly and inclined forwardly, a slidable followerblock disposed in said casing, a spring for forcing said follower block upwardly so that the shells within the magazine will be fed upwardly, the upper face of said follower block being inclined so that the shells will be held in an inclined position in said casing, leaf springs disposed in said casing and engaging the bases of the shells, said leaf'springs being spaced from each other and from the wall of the casing .50 that they will vibrate during firing, thereby causing the breaking of any jam of the shells within the casing.
2. A magazine forautomatic pistols, said magazine comprising a casing disposed in the handle of the pistol, said casing extending upwardly and inclining forwardly, a follower block disposed in said casing, an expansible spring interposed between the follower block and the bottom of the casing, said follower block having its shell engaging face inclined rearwardly and downwardly, so that the shells within the magazine will be correspondingly inclined, leaf springs disposed within the casing of the magazine and extending substantially at full length, said leaf springs being engaged by the bases of the shells, said leaf springs forming means whereby upon vibration of the same, incident to firing, the shells will be vibrated and prevented from jamming within the casing.
