Description
1. E. GALBRAITH. WIN DOW ATTACHMENT.
APPUCATION FILED OCT. 29. I919.

INVENTOR 6 m gammy/Z A TTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JQSE fE-GAL BRAIT r NEW YORK, N-
WINDOW ATTACHMENT.
stone, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved WVindow Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide 'a new and improved window attachment more especlally designed to cover the opening between the top rail of the lower sash and the upper sash to prevent insects,,dust,-
snow and other extraneous matter from entering the room by way of the said opening. Another object is to render the attachment very serviceable in case the lower sash is raised and rests on a half screen. inserted in the lower portion of the window casing. Another object is to permit of readily applying the attachment to windows of different width. and without requiring alteration in the construction of the window. 7
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. I
Figure 1 is a face view of a window provided with the improvement;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional front view of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 1 is a cross section of the same on the line 4-4.- of Fig. 3.
The attachment is applied to the top rail" 10 of a lower window sash 11 and is adapted to cover the opening 12 formed between the top rail 10 and the upper window sash 13 particularly when the. lower sash 11 is raised and its bottom rail 14 rests on top of a half screen 15, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. The attachment is preferably made of tin or other suitable sheet material and comprises a box 20 open at ,the forward end and the bottom and adapted to inclose the usual window catch or sash fastener 21 arranged on the top rail Application filed October 29,1919. Serial No. 334,297.

IOofthe lower sash 11. The box 20 is provided at the lower ends of its sides with inturned flanges 22 slidingly engaging guideways 23 formed on the inner ends of side plates 24 overlying the top rail 10 and abutting against the window pane of the upper sash 13. Theouter ends of the side plates 24 are provided with slidable extensions 25 having cut-out portions 26 fitting the stiles 27 of the upper sash 13 also the parting strips28 and the sash cords 29 of the lower sash, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the extensions 25 are adjustable on the side plates 2 1to readily fit the attachment to windows of different width. If desired, the side plates 24 may be attached to the'top of the top rail 10 of the lower sash 11' by the use of nails or other fastening means. The box 20 on account of having a sliding connection with the side plates 24 can be readily removed at any time it is desired to obtain access to the sash fastener or window catch 21, and the box can be readily replaced on the guideways 23 after the desired adjustment of the fastener or catch 21 has been made. I
The window attachment shown and described is very simple and durable in conopening between the top rail 10 of the lower sash 11 and the upper sash 13 especially when the lower sash 11 is partly raised and rests with its bottom rail 14 on the half screen 15, as shown in Fig. 1. By closing the opening referred to, air blasts, insects, dust, snow and other extraneous matter are prevented from entering the room by way of the said opening.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A window attachment in the form of a covering means adapted to be placed on top of the top rail of the lower sash and fitting against the upper sash, the said covering means comprising side plates having flanges at the inner ends and a box extending over the sash fastener and provided at its sides with flanges slidingly engaging the said flanges on the side plates to connect the side plates and the box and to allow of removing the box for gaining, access to the sash fastener. i v
2. A window attachment in the form of a covering means 'made of sheet material and adapted to be placed on the top rail of the lower sash and fitting against the upper sash, the said covering means comprising a box and side plates, the box inclosing the sash fastener and being open at the front and bottom, the box being provided at the lower ends of its sides with transverse flanges, the
tion having its inner edge formed into a transverse guideway engaged by the corresponding flange of the said box, the outer section of each side plate being cut out to fit against the corresponding stile of the upper'sash. v 1
