IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR MARKING GOODS ON BIAS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,919, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MOORE, of Scotch Plains, Union county, New Jersey, have invented a certain Improved Device for Marking Goods for Cutting on the Bias, of which the following is a specification:
The device is operated by chalkiug or otherwise suitably preparing a piece of cord, mounted in the device so as to be taut, and snapping the same when-placed in position on the material to be marked.
The accompanying drawing forms a part of this specification.
Figurel is a plan view; Fig. 2 is a frontv view; and Fig. 3 is a view at right angles thereto.

A and B are two arms of'a square analogous to the instrument by that name used by carpenters and draftsmen. rEhe lower arm A may be made either of the same thickness as the upper arm B, so that the whole device may lie level on the material to be marked, or may be made thicker than the arm B, so that it can bear against the edge of the table or other object on which the material to be marked is laid or stretched. The lower arm A is preferably graduated into inches or other units measured on a line at right angles to the chalk line C. In such ease the graduations are oblique on the arm A, as shown. D is a hinge, by which the armsA and B may be folded together when the device is not in use.
It will be understood that after marking the material the strips may be cut along the line byordinary scissors without pulling or stretching out of the truc bias 3 or, in case of manufacturers or dressmakers, a greater or less number of thicknesses may be out at one operation by the use of stout shears, one series of diagonal or bias marks serving for a greater or less number of thicknesses of material when superposed one above the other.
For some very fine goods where chalk might be objectionable, I can use simply moisture-in the chalk line O, and on snapping it and transferring a slight mark by the temporary wetness along the line the goods may be cut thereby, using this line of moisture as a guide; but in such case it will be understood that the cutting must be proceeded with immediately.
I propose to graduate the lower edge ofthe lower arm A with inches and parts of an iuch measured along the edge. These graduations will correspond with the ordinary ones, except thatthc lines should, preferably', be engraved in oblique posit-ions. The upper edge is tobe graduated with a different scale, which shall exactly indicate, `not the distance along the edge v0I' the goods, but the true width ot' the strip when cut.
I claim as my invention- The within-described bias-marking device having a chalk line, C, connecting the rightangled arms A and B, one of which is graduated for bias measurements, and the whole adapted to serve on a piece of goods in the manner herein specified.
