UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIoE.
HENLEY PALMER, OF BARNESVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEY-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,700, dated January 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENLEY PALMER, of Barnesville, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Chimney-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my chimney-top; and Fig. 2 is a top view of same.
This invention has relation to chimney-caps; and it consists in the combination of a hinged conical top with a chimney-cap having a rim projecting over the top of the smoke-stack to prevent rain from entering the latter, and having guards to prevent the wind from entering the space between the rim and smokestack, all substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a cylindrical. chimney or smoke stack, having its upper part encircled by a flaring flanged guard, A B designates an annular rim or guard, of greater diameter than the chimneytop, and supported upon the latter by means of arms 6. To this rim is hinged a conical cap, 1), secured by a latch, E, and capable of being raised so that the chimney may be easily cleaned when required. Around the base of the conical part of the cap openings F are made to increase the draft. The metal from these openings is raised to form guards e, which prevent the water from entering said openings, and also prevent sparks from escaping. The space between the top of the chimney-guard A and the rim B is for the escape of smoke. The chimney rises some distance above the lower edge of the rim B inside the latter, which. prevents the water flowing over the base of the conical cap from entering the chimney. The object of the conical cap is to increase the draft. The guard A receives the falling soot and sparks and deflects the smoke toward the outside of the rim B. The space between the rim B and guard A is encircled by a ring, A supported by arms A and designed to prevent the wind from entering the chimney and impeding the draft.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.. The hinged conical cap D having the perforations F and guards e, in combination with the enlarged chimney-rim B and chimney A, substantially as specified.
2. The combination and arrangement of the chimney A, the enlarged chimney-rim B, and
hinged conical cap D, substantially as de-- scribed.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HENLEY PALMER.
