CRANE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1920.
Application filed January 24, 1920. Serial No. 353,700.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM STEAINS VAUGHAN, of Milburn House, Newcastleupon-Tyne, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cranes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a novel form of crane particularly adapted for loading and unloading heavy weights to and from ships at docks and so forth.
The objects of this invention are to provide-- 1. A traveling transporter having a cantaliver supporting a traveler mounted for traveling movement in the same direction, and a crab on the traveler, adapted for transverse movement across the cantaliver.
2. The provision of a second traveler with crab arranged to travel to the end of the cantaliver, the other traveler having limited traveling movement.
3. Jib or the like cranes arranged on the transporter structure.
In the annexed drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 an end elevation of the crane.
The crane according to the invention consists essentially of a traveling transporter organtry structure comprising two spaced side frames or legs 2) Z) provided at their bases with wheels 0 c for traveling along a suitable track cl (5 and supporting at their upper ends fixed cantaliver extensions a a projecting overhead in the direction of travel of the gantry structure. This overhead structure carries a track it extending from one end to the other and upon which runs a traveler i, the latter in turn carrying a crab 7' adapted for movement on rails j transversely to the direction of travel of the traveler. There are preferably two travelers, ]r: designating the sec- 0nd traveler mounted on track it and provided with crab Z this traveler being adapted to deal with lighter loads and arranged to run out to the extreme end of the overhead structure, while the traveler 2' serves to deal with heavier weights and has a limited traveling movement outward.
The crane is shown at the side of a quay alongside which are moored two vessels Z m. WVith the crane run out to the position indicated by dotted lines it can deal with both vessels, heavy loads being loaded and unloaded from vessel Z by traveler 2' while the traveler is will serve to load and unload lighter articles to and from vessel m.
The crane may also be provided at suitable positions with jib or the like cranes 7) arranged to deal with loads at the sides of main structure.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a crane, the combination of a vehicular frame comprising a pair of parallel cantaliver members a traveler mounted for movement on said cantaliver members in the direction of their extension said traveler comprising a transversely movable member, and a crab carried by said transversely movable member.
2. In a crane, the combination of a vehicular frame comprising a pair of parallel cantaliver members, two travelers mounted for movement on said cantaliver members, in the direction of their extension, one of said travelers having further extension movement than the other, each said traveler comprising a transversely movable member and crabs carried by said transversely movable members respectively.
3. In a crane, the combination of a vehicular frame comprising a pair of parallel cantaliver members a traveler mounted for movement on said cantaliver members in the direction of their extension said traveler comprising a transversely movable member, and a crab carried by said transversely movable member together with a plurality of jib cranes carried by said vehicular frame.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM STEAINS VAUGHAN.
Witnesses: J. L. W. RUssELL,
