COAT-HANGER.
pc n ofrettersratenti Patented June 29,1920.
Application filed January 30, 1920. Serial No. 355,125.
binations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel coat hanger which can be readily adjusted to be suitable for coats of different sizes.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which can be folded to permit the same being carried in a pocket.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that is simple, and durable in construction, light in weight, and which can be manufactured cheaply.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
y invention is illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this ap plication in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the device with the slidable arms extended,
Fig. 2 is a front View of the same with the slidable arms retracted,
Fig. 3 is a front view of the device in folded condition,
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the same,
Fig. 5 is a section along the line 5-5 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a portion of the device along the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a hanger plate 1 having its top end formed into a hook 2 and being bent laterally intermediate its length to form a U-shaped portion 3, the sides of the latter being di posed substantially at right'angles to the plane of the hanger plate 1 and'the hook2. A depending central extension is bent into a hook 4 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. Slots 5 are cut into the bottom end of the hanger plate 1 at each side of the hook at to provide lug ortions which are bent backwardly paral e1 to the hanger plate 1 to form'sookets' G. Oppositely extending arms 7 have the lower portions of their. adjacent ends 9 disposed within the sockets 6 and are, pivotally connected at'8 to the hanger plate 1. The adjacent-ends 9 of the arms 7 are rounded to permit a free upward movement about their pivots. The
. downward movement of the arms 7 will be limited, however, by the sockets 6. It will be noted that a portion of the rounded end of each arm 7 is cut away at 9 to permit the arms 7 to assume the position shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The arms 7 have lateral lugs 10 at their opposed ends which are bent around arm extension 11 to form guides in which the arm extentions 11 may be slidably moved. The-arm extensions 11 have lateral lugs 12 at their adjacent ends which are bent around the arms 7 to aid in holding the arm extensions 11 in slidable engagement with the arms 7 and to limit the extensible movement of the former. i
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The arm extensions may be slidably moved along the arms 7 until fully extended. The collar of a coat rests within the U-shaped portion 3 of the hanger plate 1 when the arms support the shoulder portions of the coat; Trousers or other articles of clothing may be suspended from the hook 4. The device is suitable for use with coats of different sizes, since the slidable arm exten sions 11 may be moved along the arms 7 and 1 hookand having its lowerend formed with 1 side extensions, the lower edges of said side extensions being formed into lug portions which are bent laterally and upwardly, thus providing sockets, a pair of laterally ex tending arms, each having its inner end pivoted to one of said side extensions in position to engage the bottom of one of the sockets in order to limit the downward movement of the arm about its pivot, extensions to each arm, and means for holding said extension in slidable engagement with said arm, said means consisting of curved guide members at the end of each arm adapted to slid-ably receive one end of said extension and curved guide members at the opposite ends of said extension adapted to slidably receive said arm.
2. A coat hanger comprising a hanger plate having a hook at its upper end and being bent intermediate its length into a lateral U-shaped extension, said hanger plate having its lower end fashioned with opposite side extensions and a hook ar ranged to depend from the central portion thereof, the lower edges of said side extensions constituting lug portions which are bent laterally and then upwardly, thus forming sockets, a'pair of laterally extending arms, each having an inner rounded end pivoted to' one of said side extensions, whereby the downward movement of the arm about its pivot is limited by the bottom of one of the sockets, an extension to each arm, and means for holding said extension in slidable engagement With said arm, said means consisting of curved guide members at the end of each arm adapted'to slidably receive one end of said extension and curved guide members at the opposite end of said extension adapted to slidably receive said arm, said guide members being arranged to press against each arm and each extension to permit the extensible movement of the extensions being adjusted at will.
