To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnrrneor BnRconnN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved key fastener designed for fastening a key within its key-hole from one -side of a door soas to prevent the key from being turned or pushed out to allow the insertion of a duplicate or skeleton key or the use of any in strument for picking the lock whereby forcible entry may be made to a room or building.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved key fastener which includes ay shank for insertion in a key-hole and a pivot part designed to engage the bow of the key in a simple and secure manner whereby displacement of thekey is obviated, while the device is so constructed as to obviate the necessity of employing keys, pins or setscrews to secure the device to a key or the bow thereof, thereby providing a. device which can be conveniently carried in ones pocket and which will not be cumbersome7 but which on the contrary, will occupy a minimum of space when not in use, while it can be applied and removed with celerity.
With the above objects and others in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novelV features of construction and arrangements of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this applica-v tion, in which like characters indicate the. corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the improved key fastener showing a. key in phantom with a fastener applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation or edge view of a modification of the improved fastener.
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the blanks from which the fastener is made.

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of the fastener shown in Fig. 1.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the improved fastener includes a shank 6 which is vertically disposed in reference to its edge portions and twisted as shown at 7 to provide a horizontal portion 8. The shank 6 is constructed of a blank section or strip of resilient metal such as steel and formed with an aperture 9 through the horizontal portion 8 and with a reduced extension or hinge torgue 10 at Vsaid horizontally positioned en Pivoted to the shank 6 at the horizontally positioned end 8 is an angular section 11 which has its end portion 12 disposed at right angles thereto, said end being bent toward the portion S and provided with an aperture 13 through which the reduced eX- tension or tongue 10 is engaged and turned or rolled to provide a hinge joint as shown so that the angular portion 10 is disposed in spaced parallel relation to the horizontal p art 8, with the horizontal portion 8 substantially in alinement with the edge portion 141 and the pivoted part 11 spaced above the same. The free end of the part 11 is curved upwardly .as shown at 15 so as to facilitate its manipulation on its pivot and the blank forming the part 11 is provided with a stamped out tongue 16 bent downwardly from the free end of the part 11 on a reverse curve with :signed to enter the key-hole after the key 17 is inserted therein, in such a manner that the shank portion 6 prevents the turning of the fastener within the key-hole while the bit of the key is horizontally positioned and thereby retained against rotation or turning in such a manner as to prevent its withdrawal. The bow 18 of the key is, therefore, positioned upon the horizontal portion 8 of the shank and when the pivoted part is moved into operative position parallel to the part 8, the spring catch 16 is forced through the bow of the key and the aperture 9, with the walls of which it frictionally engages and in this manner the key is positively retained against displacement or turning, and the fastener cannot be removed from its engaged position by a person desiring Vto make entry which is unscrupulous or otherwise, unless the fastener is removed from the inside.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings a modication of the device is shown in which the lconstruction is the same eXcept that the horizontal portion 8 is in alinement with a medial line or the longitudinal axis of the shank 6 so that the key is held' tensionedwhen engaged by the fastener, the part ll in this instance being positioned closer to the edge portion let than in the previously described form of the invention, in which the key is not held under tension as in the present form.
In Fig. it of the drawings a still further modified form of the invention is shown in which the fastener is provided with a hori`- zontal portion 19 forming a part of the shank and which is bent upwardly as shown at 20 for pivotal connection of an upper part 2l thereto through the medium of a hinge joint 22, the part 2O forming a lug or hinge tongue which ts between spaced lugs or tongues 23 at the end of the part 2l, a pin being'employed to pivotally connect the sections of the fastener.
From the foregoing description7 taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in theart to which the invention appertains and while I describe the principle of operation of the invention, together with the devices which I now consider to be the best embodiments thereof, I desire to have itV understood that the devices shown are merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the device as claimed.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A key fastener comprising a vertical shank portion twisted to provide a short horizontal portion, a section pivoted at the end of said horizontal portion and designed to move facewise toward andaway from the same, said horizontal portion having an aperture therethrough and a resilient catchl integral with and projecting from the pivoted section to frictionally pass through the aperture, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A key fastener comprising a resilient rectilinear section of a. thin strip of spring,
metal vertically positioned to engage a keyhole and twisted intermediate of its ends to provide a horizontal portion, a movable part pivoted. to said horizontal portion and having a stamped out tongue bent therefrom ina reverse curve, said horizontal portion having an aperture for frictional engagement of said tongue therethrough whereby to pass through the bow of a key heldy between said4 horizontal part and the pivoted part when so positioned in substantially parallel relation.
3. A key fastener comprising a narrow strip of resilient metal vertically positioned and twisted to provide a short horizontal portion, said'horizontal portion having a re# duced extension at its end and a rectangular aperture therethrough, and an engaging strip having an end portion at right angles thereto,said1end portion having an aperture through which said reduced extension is engaged and turned to pivot'ally connect said parts to permit the engaging strip to be moved toward and away from the horizontal part of the. shank, said engaging strip having aI spring catch to engage the aper-V strip of resilient metal vertically positioned and twisted to provide a. short horizontal portion, said horizontal' portion having a reduced extension at its end and a rectangu lar aperture therethrough, andan engaging strip'having anend portion atl right angles thereto, said end portionhaving an aperture' through which said reduced extension is en-` gaged and turned to'pivotally connect said parts to permit the' engaging strip to bev moved toward and away from the horizon`` tal part of the shank, said'engaging strip having a spring catch to engage the aper# ture in said horizontall part at the outer edge walll thereofand' an upwardly turned' free end to facilitate itsmanipulation, the` upper edge of the verticalportion of said strip being. in horizontal alinement` with the horizontal face portion of the horizontall portion of the strip, asand for the purposes specified.'v
