To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that JOHNVB. STIMPSON, citizen of Great Britain, residing at 68 Clifton street, Middlesbrough, in the county of York and United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, steward, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combination cigarette case and lighter.

The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of a cigarette case having n'ovel lighting means positioned therein, the lighting means being operable preparatory to the opening of the case and the flame of the lighting means being .so

.- ositioned as to be shielded from the wind y the case.

Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a novel lighting means removably mounted within the case having novel means removably associated with the bottom thereof for refilling the container or receptacle, the latter having novel means positioned thereabove for facilitating the mounting and operation of the lighting means.

A further object of my invention resides in the provision of a novel resilient means removably mounted upon the upper end of the housing for holding the flint spark producer in engagement with the operating wheel, the spark producer having novel means formed thereon and associated with 85 the casing for guiding the flint producer and holding the same at all times in alinement with the operating means.

A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a novel means for 40 mounting the wick within the receptacle, the

latter having novel means associated therewith for facilitating the adjusting of the same.

A still further object of "my invention resides in the rovision of a device of the char-- acter descrilied that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.

Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification. I

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, I provide a cigarette case comprising complemental sections 1 and 2, the latter being substantially rectangular in plan and hinged adjacent their upper and lower ends by means of pintles 3 and 4, the pintles passing through the hinge ears 5 formed integral with the edges of the sections. It will be noted that the connected edges of the sections are provided between the pintles 3 and 4 with registering recesses which provide an opening 6, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The sections are further depressed adjacent their connected edges to provide recesses 7 for receiving an oil containing receptacle 8 formed preferably of metal, the receptacle having ears 9 formed integral with the side thereof, the ear 9 being engaged by the pintle 4 when the sections are being secured together. The receptacle has the lower edge thereof positioned adjacent the lower edge of the sections and is thickened and provided with an outlet opening 10 therethrough, the latter receiving a screw threaded closing plug 12 the rounded head of which ispositioned inthe opening 13, the opening being provided by recessing the lower edges of the sections adjacent the lower ends of the recesses The rece tacle conforms in contour to the recesses Twhen the same are in alinement and has the upper surface thereof provided with a central opening 8 through which is mounted a tubular wick guide 14,

washers 15 being provided upon the upper and lower surfaces of the upper end of the receptacle about the opening and guide for providing a liquid-tight joint. A wick 16 is disposed in the guide 14, the lower end of the wick being in engagement with the oil or other like fluid in the receptacle.

For the purpose of producing a spark to make a flame, I have positioned a housing 17 above the receptacle and secured the same about the intle 3 by means of a hinge ear 18, the housing being arranged in alinement with the receptacle and provided with oppositely disposed slots 19 and 20, the slot 19 being arranged in alinement with the opening 6 in the sections. Rotatably mounted adjacent the upper extended end of the guide 14 through the side walls of the housing by .means of a pin 21 is a steel wheel 22, the outer periphery of which is roughened and arranged in substantial alinement with the upper edge of the guide. The wheel 22 is positioned adjacent the alining opening 6 and slot 20 so that the same may be engaged and rotated by the finger of the user. In order'to produce a spark, I provide in this instance my improved s ark producing means comprising preferab y .a cylindrical casing 23, the latter having spring tongues 24 extending downwardly from the upper edge thereof, the tongues being engageable with the upper edges of the housing to provide an efficient mounting for the casing within the housing. A spur-shaped flint spark producer 25 has the screw threaded end thereof removably mounted in a socket 26 formed integral with the lower end of a rod 27. The upper end of the rod 27 has integrally formed oppositely extending arms 28 projecting therefrom, the terminals of the arms being disposed in diametrically opposite longitudinally extending slots 29, the slots and arms providin an efficient guiding means for the spar producer 25. For the purpose of holding the spark producer 25 in engagement with the roughened surface of the steel wheel 22, I have provided a compression spring 30, the lower end of which is attached in an eye 31 formed in the upper end of the rod and which spring is adjustably held in engagement with the arms'28 by means of an ad justing block 32 screw threaded in the upper end of the casing and having the lower edge thereof at all times in removable engagement with the upper end of the spring. An operating head 33 is formed on the upper end of the block.

In order to adjust the wick 16 in the guide 14, I have rotatably mounted a spur wheel 34 on the hinge by means of a in 35, the wheel passing through a slot a jacent the upper edge of the guide 14 so as to engage the wick. The wheel 34 is also extended slightly through the slot 20 in the housing so as to be engageable by the finger of the user for rotating the same when it is desired to adjust the wick.

For the purpose of holding a plurality of cigarettes or the like in the inner surfaces of the sections 1 and 2, I have provided strips 36, the latter being stitched or otherwise secured at uniformly spaced intervals to the sections for obvious reasons.

For the purpose of holding the sections in folded abutting relation I have provided a catch on the free outer edges thereof, the catch including a raised projection 37 formed on one of the sections and the recess 38 provided in the other of the sections for removable engagement with the projecw tion 37.

The operation of my invention is as follows:

When it is desired to light a cigarette or cigar, the operating wheel 22 is rotated by placing a finger in the opening 6 in the sections preparatory to the opening of the case and as soon as the wheel has been rotated the case is immediately opened. Inasmuch as the spark producing element is held in resilient engagement with the serrated surface of the steel wheel 22 a spark is produced during the rotation of the wheel which ignites the wick 16, the flame thus provided being shielded by the housing and the cigarette is easily lighted by placing the free end of the same above the upper edge of the housing In the event that it is desired to adjust the wick, all that is necessary to do is to engage the adjusting wheel 34 at the slot 20 and .by rotating the same it will be seen that because of the fact that the wheel is in engagement with the wick through the medium of the .slot in the upper end of the guide 14 the rotation of the wheel consequently raises the wick 16 to the desired position. WVhen all the oil or other liquid has been used in the receptacle and it is desired to refill the same, the case is inverted and the screw plug 12 removed. In this manner the receptacle can be refilled and the plug replaced.

Although I have shown and described the referred embodiment of myinvention, I esire it to be understood that I am not to be limited to the exact details shown. I desire that great stress be laid upon the arrangement of the receptacle and housing within the sections of the case and also the improved flint spark producer associated with the housing and operating wheel.

it can easily be seen that I have provide a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a'minimum cost.
