BLOCK-MOLDING APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. BALD- WIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Block-Molding Apparatus, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in block molding apparatus and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the block, after being molded, may be readily and conveniently removed from the mold.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved apparatus including a core adapted to be moved into or out of a mold and wherein the movement of the core into the mold is obtained automatr call Tlie invention also has for an object to provide an apparatus of this general character wherein the mold includes a plurality of movable walls together with automatic .means coacting therewith for maintaining the same in assembled relation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved molding apparatus whereby certaln important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and. otherwise moreconvenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitelyclaimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to de scribethe same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in end elevation of a mold constructedin accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a second position of certain of the parts being indicated by dotted lines;

closed and at substantially its transverse center;

Fig. 6 is a view partly in top plan and partly in section of the block produced by my improved apparatus as herein disclosed. As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a base plate of predetermined dimensions and configuration and herein shown as rectangular in plan. The base plate 1 is maintained in predetermined spaced relation relative to a supporting surface through the medium of the legs 2 preferably arranged adjacent the corners of said base plate 1 and disposed downwardly on predetermined outward inclines.
At substantially its transverse center and extending substantially the entire length thereof, the base plate 1 is provided with the opening or slot 3 through which is adapted to move the core C, said core C being preferably hollow with its lower wall provided at substantially its longitudinal center with an opening 4 through which extends a rod 5. The rod 5 has its upper end suitably secured to the top wall of the core C and extends a predetermined distance therebelow and is loosely directed through the bracket 6 depending from the base plate 1, and the lower. end of said rod 5 has operatively engaged therewith, as at 7, the pitman 8 which is also operatively engaged, as at 9, with the rock lever 10 pivotally engaged, as at 11, with the rod or bar 12 1connecting a pair of longitudinally alined egs 2.
The bracket Gis substantially U-shape in form and interposed between the base or said bracket 6 and the top wall of the core 0 is an expansible member 1% herein disclosed as a conventional coil springencircling the rod 5 and which serves to normally maintain the core C elevated.

vThe outer faces of the panels 15 and 1 6 are provided with the vertically directed cam or wedge members 18 having their working faces inclined downwardly and inwardly Q Coacting with each of said cams or wedge members 18 is a roller 19 or other anti-friction member rotatably mounted l snc ed around the panels 15 and 16 and having its longitudinal and transverse diameters in excess of the corresponding d ameters of the molding afforded when said their assembled 01 panels 15 and 16 are 1n operative relation.
Each end portion of the frame 20 at substantially its longitudinal center is provided with the d p nd ng 110 2 loosely directed through the guide bracket 22 depending from the adjacent end portion of the base plate 1 The lower portion of the rod 2,-l -is cperatively engaged, s at 23 with the pitman 24; which is also operatively engaged, as at 25, with the rock lever 26 pivotally engaged, at 27, with the rod ,or bar 12.
Each of the brackets 22 includes a lateral extension 28 through which the rod 21 is disposed, and interposed between said extension 28 and the frame .20 is an .expansible member 29 herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring encircling the rod 21 and which serves to constantly urge the frame 20 upwardly whereby it will be perceived that the coaction .of said frame 20 or more particularlythe rollers 19 carried thereby with the cam or wedge members 18, serves to maintainthe panels 15 and 16 in assembled or operative relation.
The outer or free end portions of the levers 26 are connected by'the treadle bar or beam 30 whereby it will be perceived that said levers 26 may becaused .to be depressed and said bar or beamSO also overof the lever 10, whereby 26 will be depressed in in ,unison, 7 lies the outer end said levers 10 and unison.
' The core when in its normal or elevated position, serves to divide the molding chamher or compartment into two sections and insertible within each of said sections is a pallet 31. The adjacent extremities of the pallets 31 are connected the plates 32 each of which at a point intermediate the pallets 31 is provided with an outwardly directed ear or extension33 to afford means whereby said pallets 31 with the molded blocks thereof may be conveniently removed after-the core C has been lowered ordepressed and the frame 20 lowered in order to permit an opening movement of the panels 15 and 1.6. The end panels 16 are a convenient means provided in their lower marginal portions with the openings 341 through which the eX- tensi ons 33 are disposed 'when said end panels are in theirvertica'l or assembled position, and whereby it will be perceived that-the extensions 33 offer no obstruction or hindrance to the operation of my improved molding apparatus.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a molding apparatus constructed in'accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and corn paratively inexpensive nature and is pareach of said walls being provided with a cam member, a frame disposed around said walls plate, walls hingedly engaged therewith,
and coacting with the cams thereof, auto- 13o matic means for constantly urging the frame in one direction for returning and holding the walls in assembled relation, and-manu ally operated means for imparting move ment to the frame in an opposite direction to permit a relative separation of the walls.
2. A molding apparatus including a base plate, walls hingedly engaged therewith, each of said Walls being provided with a cam member, a frame disposed around said walls and coacting with the cams thereof, automatic means for constantly urging the frame in one direction for returning and holding the Walls in assembled relation, and pedal operated means for imparting movement to the frame in an opposite direction to permit a relative separation of the walls.
3. A molding apparatus including a base plate, walls hingedly engaged therewith,
each of said walls being provided with a cam member, a frame disposed around said walls and coacting with the cams thereof, brackets depending from the base plate, rods secured to the frame and disposed through said brackets, expansible members interposed between the brackets and the frame for constantly urging the frame in a direction to maintain the hinged walls in closed relation, and pedal operated means operatively engaged with the rods for moving said frame in a direction to permit the hinged Walls to be swung outwardly.
