FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1917.
Application filed April 1, 1916. A SerialNo. 88,261.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr Aucns'rn RI-IO, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at 204 Berri street, in the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to a folding chair and the object of the invention is to provide a comfortable chair that may be adapted to rock or can be placed in any wanted position.
The invention will be described in the accompanying specification and drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the chair, showing it in its utmost extended position with the foot-rest adapted thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the chair in its upright position.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
In the drawings, 1 and 2 are the uprights pivotally secured to the rockers 3, and 1 is the arm-rest or cross-bar secured at one end to the uprights 1 and at the other end to the uprights 2.
5, 6, 7 and 8 are cross braces securing together the uprights 1 and 2 to the corre sponding uprights on the other side, and the rockers 3 to the corresponding rocker.
9 are dents or notches provided on the upper side of the rockers 3, and 10 is a bar pivotally secured to the upright 1 and armrest 4, having the brace or cross-bar 11 securing both ends of the bar and adapted to engage the notches 9 on the rockers 3.
The rockers 3 are each provided with a downwardly projecting lug at its rear end, forming, a flat contact surface which, when the chair is in its utmost extended position, will prevent the chair from rocking, (this being due to the fact that there will be two contacting points), and which, at the same time, will prevent it from overturning.
12 is a foot-rest formed of two longitudinal members 13 and cross-members 14, and 15 are legs or posts pivotally secured to one end of said longitudinal members the other ends of said longitudinal members 13 being provided with hooks or notches 16.
17 is a piece of canvas or any suitable material secured at one end to the brace 5 in the uppermost part of the uprights 2 and at the other end to the cross-bar or brace 6, which is secured intermediate in the uprights 1.
18 is another piece of canvas or any suitable material secured to the cross-bars 14; between the longitudinal members 13.
In Fig. 2, the foot-rest has been moved into inoperative position, and this is done by reversing the position from the foot-rest as shown in Fig. l to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and by hooking the projecting members 16 tothe intermediate bar 6.
In Fig. 1 is shown a head-rest 19 detachably supported on the cross bar 5 by means of the hook-shaped ends 20.
The invention herein described is of siniple construction, compact when folded, light and particularly strong.
This chair is particularly suitable. for verandas, sanatoriums and hospitals, as it can be placed in any wanted position and is most comfortable.
