7 To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN G. KNURcK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, l Voodhaven, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Envelop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Thisinvention relates to envelope of that type which can be opened at one end for postal inspection and which are open at the top for facilitating the insertion of mail matter, there being a sealing flap for closing the top after the insertion.

The invention has for its general objects to improve the construction of envelops so as to be more durable and serviceable, and which when sealed will insure the inspection end against accidental opening, while at the same time permitting the postal authorities to readily open the envelop for in spection.

A more specific object is to improve the construction of inspection envelops of the type disclosed in United States Letters Patent 1,196,245, granted to me August 29, 1916, wherein interlocked unsealed flaps permit of the opening of the envelop, the improvement being in the provision of an auxiliary or secondary flap on the doubled interlocking flap, whereby the secondary flap can be turned down over the outside of the back face of the envelop at one corner there of to reinforce the envelop at this portion same from being acc1den-.

and prevent the tally opened, such secondary fiap being nor- ,gnally concealed under the sealing flap of latter is pasted down. lVith such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.

In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate views,

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the front of the envelop, 2 the back, 3 the top or sealing flap, 4 the flap on the end of the back 2 for sealing one end of the envelop, and 5 and 6 interlocking flaps on the back and front 1 and 2 for closing the other end of the envelop. The flap 6 is approximately twice the length of the flap 5 and is doubled so as to form a pocket that lies within the body of the envelop, and into which the flap 5 is folded, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The flap 6 has a secondary flap 7 formed by a triangular extension at the top edge of the flap jecting above the top being adapted to fold wardly over the back edge of the back 2 and outwardly and downface of the back 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. This serves to materially reinforce the corner of the envelop where the open top meets the openable end of the envelop and insures the envelop maintaining its form during the insertion of the contents. lVhen the top flap is folded down and sealed it covers the locking corner flap 7, as indicated by the dotted line 8, Fig. 1.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have dewith the article which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the article shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. An envelop comprising a body having a sealing flap along one edge, a double'fiap connected with one face of the envelop and disposed within the body, a flap connected with the other face and normally disposed folded flap having an extension folded in the line of fold of the folded flap and forming a secondary flap extending out of the downwardly against one of thefaces thereof and lying under the sealing flap.
